बीते कई दशकों से भारतीय नृत्य को देश-विदेश में गौरव प्रदान करने वाली सोनल मानसिंह मंच पर जब अपनी कला का प्रदर्शन करती है, तो दर्शक मुग्ध होकर पूरी तल्लीनता के साथ देखते हैं. सोनल मानसिंह एक जज्बे का नाम है, एक ऐसे हौसले का नाम है जो किसी भी परिस्थिति में हार नहीं मानता. सामाजिक बंधन हो या फिर हादसा, कोई उनके पांवों में बेड़ी नहीं बांध सका. भारतनाट्यम और ओडिसी पर गहरी पकड़ रखने वाली सोनल मानसिंह एक प्रेरणा है, उन हजारों लोगों के लिए जो किसी भी परिस्थिति में हार नहीं मानते.
छह दशक से भरतनाट्यम और ओडीसी नृत्य की प्रस्तुति करनेवाली मानसिंह ने मनिपुरी, कुचिपुरी के साथ संगीत का भी प्रशिक्षण लिया है. वह डांसर, कोरियोग्राफर, शिक्षक, वक्ता और सामाजसेवी के रूप में मशहूर हैं. नृत्य में उनके करियर की शुरुआत 1962 में हुई. मुंबई में अपने पहले ही स्टेज परफॉर्मेंस के दौरान उन्होंने नृत्य प्रेमियों को मंत्रमुग्ध कर दिया. उसके बाद उन्होंने दुनिया भर में इस तरह की यादगार प्रस्तुति दी. उन्होंने यूरोप के कई देशों का दौरा किया. बाद में उन्होंने 1977 में भारतीय शास्त्रीय नृत्य केंद्र (सीआईसीडी) की नई दिल्ली में स्थापना की. इस संस्थान में हजारों नृत्यांगना को प्रशिक्षण दिया गया.
दुर्घटना 1974 में एक कार दुर्घटना में वह बुरी तरह घायल हो गईं. उनका डांसिंग करियर लगभग खत्म हो चुका था. डॉक्टरों ने उनको नृत्य से मना कर दिया और फिजियोथेरापी का सुझाव दिया था. मीडिया में उनको लेकर तरह-तरह की बातें छपने लगी थीं. लेकिन उन्होंने हार नहीं मानी. महीनें तक ईलाज के बाद उन्होंने फिर से मंच पर वापसी की और सबको चौंका दिया.
बता दें कि महाराष्ट्र और दिल्ली दोनों ही राज्यों की मानी जाने वाली 74 वर्षीय नृत्यांगना सोनल मानसिंह ने औपचारिक पढ़ाई की सबसे बड़ी डिग्री डी. लिट हासिल की है. उन्होंने अपनी पढ़ाई भारतीय विद्या भवन, एलिफिंस्टन कॉलेज, मुंबई, जीबी पंत यूनिवर्सिटी, उत्तराखंड और संबलपुर यूनिवर्सिटी ओडीशा से की है. उनकी उपलब्धियों में संगीत नाटक अकादमी अवार्ड (1987), राजीव गांधी एक्सिलेंस अवार्ड (1991), इंदिरा प्रियदर्शिनी अवार्ड (1994), मध्य प्रदेश सरकार का कालीदास सम्मान (2006), सबसे कम उम्र में पद्म भूषण सम्मान (1992) शामिल है. वहीं साल 2003 में पद्म विभूषण पाने वाली देश की दूसरी महिला बनीं. सोनल मानसिंह साल 2003 से 2005 तक संगीत नाटक अकादमी की चेयरपर्सन भी रह चुकी हैं.
साल 2016 से वह इंदिरा गांधी नेशनल सेंटर ऑफ आर्ट्स की ट्रस्टी और सेंट्रल एडवाइजरी बोर्ड ऑफ कल्चर की मेंबर हैं. उन्होंने साल 1974 में भीषण हादसे की शिकार होने के बावजूद मंच पर वापसी की और साल 1977 में दिल्ली में सेंटर फॉर इंडियन क्लासिक डांसेस की स्थापना कर सैकड़ों प्रशिक्षुओं की लगातार मदद कर रही हैं। साल 2002 में फिल्म निर्देशक प्रकाश झा ने सोनल मानसिंह के चार दशकों के डांस कैरियर पर केंद्रित एक डॉक्यूमेंट्री का निर्माण किया था.
सोनल मानसिंह एक भारतीय शास्त्रीय नर्तक और गुरु भरतनाट्यम और ओडिसी नृत्य शैली हैं; जो अन्य भारतीय शास्त्रीय नृत्य शैली में भी कुशल है. सोनल मानसिंह का जन्म मुंबई में हुआ, तीन बच्चों में से अरविंद और पूर्णिमा पाकवास, गुजरात के एक प्रसिद्ध सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता और २००४ में पद्म विभूषण विजेता थे. उनके दादा एक स्वतंत्रता सेनानी मंगल दास पाकवास थे, और भारत के पहले पांच गवर्नरों में से एक था। उन्होंने चार साल की उम्र में मणिपुरी नृत्य, नागपुर के एक शिक्षक से अपनी बड़ी बहन के साथ सीखना शुरू कर दिया, फिर सात साल की उम्र में उन्होंने पांडानल्लुर स्कूल के विभिन्न गुरूओं से भरतनाट्यम सीखना शुरू किया, बॉम्बे में कुमार जयकर सहित. उन्होंने भारतीय विद्या भवन और बीए से संस्कृत में “प्रवीण” और “कोविद” डिग्री दी है. एलफिन्स्टन कॉलेज, बॉम्बे से जर्मन साहित्य में(ऑनर्स) डिग्री भी उनके पास है.
