पहले गलियों-मोहल्लों में चारपाई बीनने वालों की आवाजें आया करती थीं, किंतु अब ये आवाजें सुनाई नहीं देतीं. अब चारपाई बीनने वाले शायद ही मिले सकें. वर्तमान समय में नायलान की पट्टी से महज आधे घंटे में एक फोल्डिंग पलंग तैयार कर दिया जाता है.
बाजार में आज कई प्रकार के पलंग या चारपाई बेचे जा रहे हैं. बेंत से भी इन्हें बनाया जा रहा है. आधुनिक घरों के हिसाब से इनकी ख़रीदी होती है, लेकिन बाँध से निर्मित चारपाई अब बहुत कम देखने को मिलती है. ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में अभी भी चारपाई का चलन थोड़ी मात्रा में है. चारपाई की बिटिया भी लोगों की दुलारी होती थी, जिसे मचिया कहा जाता है.
मचिया छोटे स्टूल के आकार की चार पाँवों व छोटे बाँसों से बनी और रस्सियों या बाँध से बुनी होती थी. इस पर बैठकर बड़े बूढ़े-बूढ़ियाँ तमाम अहम मसले तय करते थे। घर-घर में मचिया कहीं भी डाल ली जाती थी. इसे बैठक या चैपाल में भी ख़ास जगह हासिल होती थी. यह भले ही सिंहासन नहीं कहला पाई हो, लेकिन सम्मानजनक आसन रही. चारों बाँसों को जोड़कर उन्हें पायों के सहारे खड़ा किया जाता है. इसके बाद बाँध से चारपाई को बीनकर तैयार करते हैं. इसे आम बोलचाल की भाषा में ‘खटिया’ या ‘खाट’ भी कहा जाता है.
बदलते दौर में भी चारपाई का चलन बरकरार है. ठंड में ठिठुरन हो या गर्मी से तर बतर शरीर रस्सी से बुनी चारपाई अब भी लोगों को राहत पहुंचाती है. आज भी चारपाई ग्रामीण अंचलों और कुछ शहरी घरों की शोभा बनी हुई है. सभ्यता के विकास के साथ मनुष्य के जीवन को आरामदायक बनाने में चारपाई, जिसे खटिया या खाट भी कहते हैं, का उपयोग प्राचीनकाल से होता आया है.
ग्रामीणों की मान्यता है कि यह जन्म से लेकर मरण तक साथ निभाती है. लकड़ी व रस्सी से बनी खटिया आयताकार होती है. इसकी बुनाई की परंपरा भी प्राचीन है. ग्रामीण अंचलों में कई कुशल कारीगर हैं. जो खटिया बुनने के कारोबार मे सालों भर लगे रहते हैं. यह परंपरा सदियों से चली आ रही है. बुजुर्गों से यह परंपरा लोग सीखते आ रहे हैं.
बता दें कि चारपाई अथवा ‘खटिया’ या ‘खाट’ चार पायों वाला एक प्रकार का छोटा-सा पलंग होता है, जो बाँस, बाँध, सूतली या फिर निवाड़ आदि से बनाया जाता है. मुख्य रूप से इसका प्रयोग सोने तथा उठने-बैठने के लिए होता है. कभी-कभी इसका प्रयोग अन्न आदि को सूखाने के लिए भी किया जाता है. चारपाई को ‘खाट’ भी कहते हैं. भारत के अधिकांश ग्रामीण इलाकों में इसका प्रयोग अधिक होता था. काफ़ी पुराने समय से ही चारपाई घरेलू इस्तेमाल की वस्तुओं में महत्त्वपूर्ण रही है. इसकी ख़ासियत का अन्दाजा इसी से लग जाता है कि चारपाई पर हिन्दी फ़िल्मों में कई गाने भी बनाये जा चुके हैं. किंतु अब चारपाई का स्थान आधुनिक डबल बेड पलंग और फ़ोल्डिंग पलंग आदि ने ले लिया है, जिस कारण इसका प्रयोग अब कम होता जा रहा है.
चारपाई नारियल की रस्सियों या बाँध से बुनी जाती थीं. इसे कपड़े की चैड़ी पट्टियों से भी बुना जाता था. बुनी हुई बड़ी-बड़ी चारपाईयाँ घर की आरामगाह से लेकर आँगन, छत, बैठक व दरवाजे की शोभा होती थी. शादी-विवाह में इन्हें सम्मान की दृष्टि से देखा जाता था. चारपाई उर्दू शब्द है। माना जाता है कि वर्ष 1845 में चारपाई का चलन शहरों में सामने आया. दस अँगुलियों के जादू का कमाल चारपाई कैसे कहलाया, इस पर भी कई किस्से हैं, लेकिन चैपाये से इसे जोड़कर देखा जाता है. चारपाई का चलन मुस्लिम शासकों के भारत पर अधिकार के बाद बहुत बढ़ा.
