कथकली अभिनय, ‘नृत्य’ (नाच) और ‘गीता’ (संगीत) तीन कलाओं से मिलकर बनी एक संपूर्ण कला है. यह एक मूक अभिनय है, जिसमें अभिनेता बोलता एवं गाता नहीं है, लेकिन बेहद संवेदनशील माध्यमों जैसे- हाथ के इशारे और चेहरे की भावनाओं के सहारे अपनी भावनाओं की सुगम अभिव्यक्ति देता है. कथकली नाटकीय और नृत्य कला दोनों है। परंतु मुख्य तौर पर यह नाटक है. यह साधारण नाटकीय कला से कहीं ज्यादा अच्छा प्रस्तुतीकरण है. यह यथार्थवादी कला नहीं है, लेकिन अपनी कल्पनाशीलता के चलते यह ‘भरत नाट्यशास्त्र’ के समानांनतर है.
केरल के दक्षिण-पश्चिमी राज्यर का एक समृद्ध और फलने-फूलने वाला शास्त्रीय नृत्य तथा यहाँ की परम्परा है. ‘कथकली’ का अर्थ है- ‘एक कथा का नाटक’ या ‘एक नृत्यस नाटिका’. ‘कथा’ का अर्थ है- ‘कहानी’. इस नृत्य में अभिनेता रामायण और महाभारत के महाग्रंथों और पुराणों से लिए गए चरित्रों का अभिनय करते हैं. यह अत्यंत रंग-बिरंगा नृत्यक है. इसके नर्तक उभरे हुए परिधानों, फूलदार दुपट्टों, आभूषणों और मुकुट से सजे होते हैं.
कथकली के बारे मे यह माना जाता है कि यह 300 या 400 साल पुरानी कला नहीं हैं, इसकी वास्तविक उत्पत्ति 1500 साल पहले से है. कथकली विकास की एक लंबी प्रक्रिया से गुजरी है और इसकी इस यात्रा ने केरल में कई अन्य मिश्रित कलाओं के जन्म और विकास का मार्ग भी प्रशस्त किया है. कथकली को आर्यन और द्रविड सभ्यता के प्रतीक के रूप में भी देखा जा सकता है, जिसने अनुष्ठान और संस्कृतियों को समझते हुए उनके साथ मिलकर इन सभ्यताओं से नाटक और नृत्य की इस कला को उधार लिया. कथकली के इतिहास के पुनर्निर्माण में यह बात ध्यान रखना आवश्यक है कि व्यावहारिक रूप से सभी प्रकार के औपचारिक नृत्य, नाटक और नृत्य नाटक की सभी कलाओं को अस्तित्व में लाने का श्रेय कथकली को ही जाता है. एक अध्ययन के दौरान यह साबित भी हो चुका है कि केरल के सभी प्रारंभिक नृत्य और नाटक जैसे- ‘चकइरकोथू’ और ‘कोडियाट्टम’, कई धार्मिक नृत्य जो भगवती पंथ से संबंधित है जैसे- ‘मुडियाअट्टू’, ‘थियाट्टम’ और ‘थेयाम’, सामाजिक, धार्मिक और वैवाहित नृत्य जैसे- ‘सस्त्राकली’ और ‘इजामट्क्कली’ और बाद में विकसित नृत्य जैसे- ‘कृष्णाअट्टम’, ‘रामाअट्टम’ और मोहिनीअट्टम आदि कथकली की ही देन हैं.
नृत्य में मानव, देवता समान, दैत्यत आदि को शानदार वेशभूषा और परिधानों के माध्य म से प्रदर्शित किया जाता है. इस नृत्यम का सबसे अधिक प्रभावशाली भाग यह है कि इसके चरित्र कभी बोलते नहीं हैं, केवल उनके हाथों के हाव भाव की उच्चा विकसित भाषा तथा चेहरे की अभिव्यनक्ति होती है, जो इस नाटिका के पाठ्य को दर्शकों के सामने प्रदर्शित करती है. उनके चेहरे के छोटे और बड़े हाव भाव, भंवों की गति, नेत्रों का संचलन, गालों, नाक और ठोड़ी की अभिव्य क्ति पर बारीकी से काम किया जाता है तथा एक कथकली अभिनेता नर्तक द्वारा विभिन्ना भावनाओं को प्रकट किया जाता है. इसमें अधिकांशत: पुरुष ही महिलाओं की भूमिका निभाते हैं, जबकि अब कुछ समय से महिलाओं को कथकली में शामिल किया जाने लगा है.
कथकली में दो मुख्य संगीतकार होते हैं, जिसमें मुख्य संगीतकार को ‘पोनानी’ और दूसरे को ‘सिनकिडी’ के नाम से जाना जाता है. कथकली गायन उच्च काव्य उच्चारण में से है, जिन्हें मलयालम साहित्य के रत्नों में गिना जाता है. ‘मुद्रास’ अर्थात् ‘हाथ के इशारे’ को शाब्दिक भाषा के विकल्प के तौर पर प्रयोग किया जाता है, लेकिन इससे ज्यादा इसे इस्तेमाल नहीं किया जाता, न ही नाटक में और न ही नृत्य में. चेन्दा के साथ संगत करने के लिए मदालम, चेंगला और इथालम का प्रयोग संगीतकारों के द्वारा किया जाता है, इसके साथ अभिनेता के द्वारा चेहरे के हाव भाव, शारीरिक व्यवहार, अंगुलियों की भाषा और हाथों के इशारों के माध्यम से संगीत का अनुवाद भी किया जाता है. जैसे ही गाने की शुरूआत होती है, अभिनेता अपने मूकाभिनय के साथ और अपने इशारों के माध्यम से ऐसी अभिव्यक्ति करता है, जिससे दर्शक सपनों की दुनिया में अपने आप को महसूस करता है.
