शक्ति के अपरम्पार रुप है. दस महाविद्या असल मे एक ही आदि शक्ति के अवतार है. वो क्रोध मे काली, सम्हारक क्रोध मे तारा और शिघ्र कोपि मे धूमवती का रुप धारण कर लेती है. दयाभाव मे प्रेम और पोषण मे वो भुवनेश्वरी, मतंगी और महालक्ष्मी का रुप धारण कर लेती है. शक्ति साधना में कुल दस महाविद्याओं की उपासना होती है. यह सब महाविद्या ज्ञान और शक्ति प्राप्त करने की कामना रखनेवाले उपासक करते हैं.
शास्त्रों अनुसार इन दस महाविद्या में से किसी एक की नित्य पूजा अर्चना करने से लंबे समय से चली आ रही बीमार, भूत-प्रेत, अकारण ही मानहानी, बुरी घटनाएं, गृहकलह, शनि का बुरा प्रभाव, बेरोजगारी, तनाव आदि सभी तरह के संकट तत्काल ही समाप्त हो जाते हैं और व्यक्ति परम सुख और शांति पाता है. इन माताओं की साधना कल्प वृक्ष के समान शीघ्र फलदायक और सभी कामनाओं को पूर्ण करने में सहायक मानी गई है.
दस महाविद्या :
1. काली 2. तारा 3.त्रिपुरसुंदरी 4.भुवनेश्वरी 5.छिन्नमस्ता 6.त्रिपुरभैरवी 7.धूमावती 8.बगलामुखी 9.मातंगी और 10. कमला.
प्रवृति के अनुसार दस महाविद्या के तीन समूह हैं. पहला:- सौम्य कोटि (त्रिपुर सुंदरी, भुवनेश्वरी, मातंगी, कमला), दूसरा:- उग्र कोटि (काली, छिन्नमस्ता, धूमावती, बगलामुखी), तीसरा:- सौम्य-उग्र कोटि (तारा और त्रिपुर भैरवी).
कहीं-कहीं 24 विद्याओं का वर्णन भी आता है. परंतु मूलतः दस महाविद्या ही प्रचलन में है. इनके दो कुल हैं. इनकी साधना 2 कुलों के रूप में की जाती है. श्री कुल और काली कुल. इन दोनों में नौ- नौ देवियों का वर्णन है. इस प्रकार ये 18 हो जाती है. कुछ ऋषियों ने इन्हें तीन रूपों में माना है. उग्र, सौम्य और सौम्य-उग्र. उग्र में काली, छिन्नमस्ता, धूमावती और बगलामुखी है. सौम्य में त्रिपुरसुंदरी, भुवनेश्वरी, मातंगी और महालक्ष्मी (कमला) है. तारा तथा भैरवी को उग्र तथा सौम्य दोनों माना गया हैं. देवी के वैसे तो अनंत रूप है पर इनमें भी तारा, काली और षोडशी के रूपों की पूजा, भेद रूप में प्रसिद्ध हैं. भगवती के इस संसार में आने के और रूप धारण करने के कारणों की चर्चा मुख्यतः जगत कल्याण, साधक के कार्य, उपासना की सफलता तथा दानवों का नाश करने के लिए हुई.
सर्वरूपमयी देवी सर्वभ् देवीमयम् जगत। अतोऽहम् विश्वरूपा त्वाम् नमामि परमेश्वरी।।
अर्थात् ये सारा संसार शक्ति रूप ही है. इस बात का विशेष ध्यान रखना चाहिए.
