कर्णावती ऐसी महान राजपूत रानी थी, जिन्हों्ने जौहर में जान दे दी, पर घुटने नहीं टेके. राखी के साथ कर्णावती ने एक संदेश भी भेजा था. उन्हों ने सहायता का अनुरोध करते कहा था कि मैं आपको भाई मानकर ये राखी भेज रही हूं.
राखी मिलते ही हुमायूं ने वहां से आगरा और दिल्ली संदेश भेजा और फौजें जुटाने का आदेश दिया. लेकिन जब तक वह फौजों को लेकर चित्तौड़ पहुंचा, देर हो चुकी थी. कर्णावती महल की सभी स्त्रियों के साथ जौहर कर चुकी थीं.
दरअसल, चित्तौड़ के शासक महाराणा विक्रमादित्य को कमजोर समझकर गुजरात के सुल्तान बहादुरशाह ने राज्यत पर मार्च 1534 में चितौड़ के नाराज सामंतो के कहने पर हमला किया था. राणा सांगा की पत्नी राजमाता कर्णावती को जब ये पता चला तो वे चिंतित हो गईं. उन्हें पता था कि उनके राज्यत की रक्षा केवल हूमायूं कर सकता है. इसलिए मेवाड़ की लाज बचाने के लिए उन्होने मुगल साम्राट हुमायूं को राखी भेजी और सहायाता मांगी. हुमायूं ने राखी का मान रखा. राखी मिलते ही उसने ढेरों उपहार भेजें और आश्वस्त किया कि वह सहायता के लिए आएगा. इतिहासकारों की मानें तो, हुमायूं ने राखी को स्वीकार कर मेवाड़ की ओर कूच तो कर दिया, लेकिन वह समय पर वहां पहुंचने में नाकाम रहा. इस कारण रानी कर्णावती ने किले की अन्य महिलाओं के साथ जौहर कर लिया. वहां पहुंचने पर हुमायूं को बहुत दुख हुआ. उसने बहादुरशाह को पराजित कर रानी कर्णावती के बेटे को मेवाड़ का शासक बना दिया. कहा जाता है कि उस समय से ही राखी बांधने की यह परंपरा शुरू हुई. रक्षाबंधन के दिन सभी बहनें अपने भाईयों की कलाई पर राखी बांधती हैं और अपनी रक्षा का वचन लेती हैं. इस साल यह त्योहार 15 अगस्त को मनाया जाएगा.
