पंचम दा के नाम से मशहूर संगीतकार आर डी बर्मन ने लगातार तीन दशकों तक हिंदी सिनेमा पर राज किया और 331 फिल्मों को अपने संगीत से सजाया. पंचम जितना अपने संगीत के लिए मशहूर थे, उतना ही अपनी आवाज के लिए भी. पंचम दा का पूरा नाम राहुल देव बर्मन था. आरडी बर्मन को हिन्दी फिल्म इंडस्ट्री के मौलिक संगीतकारों में गिना जाता है. उन्हें हमेशा पंचम दा के नाम से पुकारा जाता रहा और इस नाम के पीछे भी कई कहानियां हैं. संगीत उनके खून में दौड़ता था और पिता सचिन देव बर्मन फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में बड़े नामी संगीतकार थे और पंचम दा ने उन्हीं से संगीत के सुरों को साधना सीखा. कहा तो यह भी जाता है कि किशोर कुमार का फिल्म ‘अराधना’ का सुपरहिट गाना ‘मेरे सपनों की रानी’ असल में पंचम दा की ही धुन थी, हालांकि फिल्म का संगीत उनके पिता एसडी बर्मन ने दिया था.
एक संगीतकार के तौर पर आरडी की पहली रिलीज फिल्म कॉमेडियन महमूद की पहली प्रोडक्शन 1961 की ‘छोटे नवाब’ थी. एक संगीतकार के तौर पर उनकी पहली हिट फिल्म 1966 में ‘तीसरी मंजिल’ रही. इस फिल्म के हिट संगीत से खुश होकर प्रोड्यूसर और लेखक नासिर हुसैन ने पंचम दा और गीतकार मजरूह सुल्तानपुरी के साथ 6 और फिल्में साइन की. एक तरफ उनके संगीत की तारीफ हो रही थी तो दूसरी तरफ पंचम दा अपने पिता के साथ सहायक के तौर पर भी काम जारी रखे हुए थे.
1970 के दशक में पंचम दा खूब हिट हुए. किशोर कुमार की आवाज, राजेश खन्ना की एक्टिंग और पंचम दा के म्यूजिक ने इस दशक में खूब वाहवाही बटोरी. 1970 में कटी पतंग के सुपरहिट संगीत से यह जोड़ी शुरू हुई और फिर रुकने का नाम नहीं लिया.
70 में पंचम दा ने देव आनंद की फिल्म ‘हरे रामा हरे कृष्णा’ के लिए संगीत दिया और आशा भोंसले ने ‘दम मारो दम’ गाना गाया, जो जबरदस्त हिट रहा. यह गाना फिल्म पर भारी न पड़ जाए इसी डर से देव आनंद ने पूरा गाना फिल्म में नहीं रखा. इसके बाद 1971 में भी आरडी ने कई जबरदस्त हिट गाने दिए.
1972 में ‘सीता और गीता’, ‘रामपुर का लक्ष्मण’, ‘बोम्बे टू गोवा’, ‘अपना देश’, ‘परिचय’ जैसी फिल्मों में हिट संगीत दिया. इसके बाद 1973 में ‘यादों की बारात’, 1974 में ‘आप की कसम’, 1975 में ‘शोले’ और ‘आंधी’, 1978 में ‘कसमें वादे’, 1978 में ‘घर’, 1979 में ‘गोलमाल’, 1980 में ‘खूबसूरत’, 1981 में ‘सनम तेरी कसम’ जिसके लिए उन्हें फिल्मफेयर अवॉर्ड मिला, ‘रॉकी’, ‘मासूम’, ‘सत्ते पे सत्ता’, ‘लव स्टोरी’ जैसी फिल्मों में भी पंचम दा ने अपने संगीत का जलवा बिखेरा.
गायक कुमार शानू को पंचम दा ने ही पहला ब्रेक दिया, यही नहीं गायक अभिजीत को भी आरडी ने ही बड़ा ब्रेक दिया. हरिहरन को भी पहली बार आरडी के साथ ही पहचान मिली. मोहम्मद अजीज ने भी पंचम दा के साथ ही 1985 में पहला गाना गाया.
1980 के दशक में पंचम दा का जादू फीका पड़ने लगा और बप्पी लाहिड़ी, लक्ष्मीकांत प्यारेलाल जैसे संगीतकार उनकी जगह लेने लगे. हालांकि इस दशक में भी उन्होंने कई यादगार गाने दिए. पंचम दा को 1983 में फिल्म ‘सनम तेरी कसम’, 1984 में ‘मासूम’ और 1995 में ‘1942: ए लव स्टोरी’ में शानदार संगीत देने के लिए फिल्मफेयर अवॉर्ड से नवाजा गया.
बचपन में आरडी की नानी ने उनका उपनाम टुबलू रखा था, हालांकि बाद में वे पंचम के उपनाम से मशहूर हुए. पंचम नाम पड़ने के पीछे कई कहानियां हैं. एक कहानी के अनुसार बचपन में जब वे रोते थे तो पांचवे सुर (पा) में रोते थे, इसलिए उनका नाम पंचम रखा गया. दूसरी कहानी यह है कि वे बचपन में पांच अलग-अलग तान में रोते थे. तीसरी कहानी के अनुसार जब अभिनेता अशोक कुमार ने उन्हें देखा तो वे बार-बार ‘पा’ शब्द का उच्चारण कर रहे थे इसलिए उनका नाम पंचम पड़ गया.
पंचम दा की शुरुआती पढ़ाई कोलकाता के सेंट जेवियर्स स्कूल में हुई. सिर्फ 9 साल की उम्र में आरडी ने अपना पहला गाना ‘ऐ मेरी टोपी पलट के आ’ कम्पोज किया, जिसे उनके पिता ने 1956 में फिल्म ‘फंटूश’ में इस्तेमाल किया. ‘सर जो तेरा चकराये’ की धुन भी आरडी ने ही अपने बचपन में तैयार की थी, जिसे उनके पिता ने 1957 में गुरु दत्त की फिल्म ‘प्यासा’ में प्रयोग किया.
मुंबई में पंचम दा को उस्ताद अली अकबर खान ने सरोद और समता प्रसाद ने तबले की ट्रेनिंग दी. वे सलील चौधरी को भी अपना गुरु मानते थे. उन्होंने अपने पिता के साथ ऑर्केस्ट्रा में हार्मोनिका और माउथ ऑर्गन भी बजाया. कई फिल्में में वे पिता के साथ सहायक संगीतकार भी रहे.
