भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के महानायक कहे जाने वाले शहीद चंद्रशेखर आजाद का जन्म 23 जुलाई 1906 को मध्य प्रदेश के झाबुआ जिले के भाबरा गांव में हुआ था, जिसे अब ‘आजादनगर’ के नाम से जाना जाता है. शहीद चंद्रशेखर आजाद जी के पिता का नाम पंडित सीताराम तिवारी और मां का नाम जगदानी देवी था.
14 वर्ष की उम्र में ही वह वाराणसी चले गए, जहां उन्होंने संस्कृत पाठशाला में पढ़ाई की और इसी दौरान उन्होंने कानून भंग आंदोलन में हिस्सा लिया. 1920 से 21 के दौरान वह गांधी के असहयोग आंदोलन से जुड़ गए और गिरफ्तार हुए. जेल में पेशी के दौरान उन्होंने अपना नाम ‘आजाद’ पिता का नाम ‘स्वतंत्रता’ और निवास ‘जेल’ बताया, जिसके चलते उन्हें 15 कोड़ों की सजा मिली. 1921 में महात्मा गांधी ने असहयोग आन्दोलन शुरू किया था. इससे जज भड़क गया और आजाद को 15 बेंतो की सजा सुनाई गई. यही से उनका नाम पड़ा आजाद. फिर 1922 में एक दम से आन्दोलन वापिस ले लिया गया तो इससे आजाद की सोच में बड़ा बदलाव आया. असहयोग आंदोलन बंद होने के बाद चंद्रशेखर आजाद ‘हिंदुस्तान रिपब्लिकन पार्टी’ के सदस्य बन गए. आगे चलकर वे इस पार्टी में कमांडर-इन-चीफ़ भी बनें.
17 दिसंबर 1928 को चंद्रशेखर आजाद, राजगुरू और भगत सिंह ने लाहौर में पुलिस अधीक्षक के दफ्तर को घर लिया और जैसे ही जेपी साण्डर्स बाहर निकले तो राजगुरू ने उन पर गोली दाग दी. फिर भगत सिंह ने भी साण्डर्स को गोली मारी और वहां से निकल लिए. इस पर जब साण्डर्स के अंगरक्षक ने उनका पीछा किया तो चंद्रशेखर आजाद ने उसे भी खत्म कर दिया.
अल्फ्रेड पार्क इलाहाबाद में 1931 में उन्होंने समाजवादी क्रांति का आह्वान किया, जहां उन्होंने संकल्प लिया कि वह कभी भी पकड़े नहीं जाएंगे और न ही ब्रिटिश सरकार के हाथों मारे जाएंगे और इसी संकल्प को पूरा करने के लिए उन्होंने 27 फरवरी 1931 को इसी पार्क में गोली मारकर देश के लिए खुद की आहुति दे दी.
