हर साल स्वतंत्रता दिवस पर भारत के प्रधानमंत्री लाल किले से झंडा फहराते हैं, लेकिन 15 अगस्त, 1947 को ऐसा नहीं हुआ था। लोकसभा सचिवालय के एक शोध पत्र के मुताबिक नेहरू ने 16 अगस्त, 1947 को लाल किले से झंडा फहराया था। भारत 15 अगस्त को आजाद जरूर हो गया लेकिन उस समय उसका अपना कोई राष्ट्र गान नहीं था। हालांकि रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर जन-गण-मन 1911 में ही लिख चुके थे, लेकिन यह राष्ट्रगान 1950 में ही बन पाया।
15 अगस्त, 1947 को लॉर्ड माउंटबेटन ने अपने दफ्तर में काम किया। दोपहर में नेहरू ने उन्हें अपने मंत्रिमंडल की सूची सौंपी और बाद में इंडिया गेट के पास प्रिसेंज गार्डेन में एक सभा को संबोधित किया। 15 अगस्त 1947 को, 1 रुपया 1 डॉलर के बराबर था और सोने का भाव 88 रुपए 62 पैसे प्रति 10 ग्राम था। ऐसी कई जानकारियां हैं, जो उस दिन पूरी दुनिया को पता चला।
