हर साल भाद्रपद मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि पर भगवान श्रीकृष्ण का जन्मोत्सव मनाया जाता है। इस साल भगवान श्रीकृष्ण जन्माष्टमी कब मनाई जाए, व्रत कब किया जाए, इसे लेकर पंचांग भेद हैं। कुछ पंचांग में 23 अगस्त को और कुछ में 24 अगस्त को जन्माष्टमी की तिथि बताई गई है। उज्जैन के ज्योतिषाचार्य पं. मनीष शर्मा के अनुसार श्रीकृष्ण का जन्म अष्टमी तिथि और रोहिणी नक्षत्र में हुआ था और 23 अगस्त को ये दोनों योग रहेंगे। जबकि श्रीकृष्ण की जन्म स्थली मथुरा में 24 अगस्त को जन्माष्टमी मनाई जाएगी।
स्मार्त संप्रदाय के मंदिरों में, साधु-संन्यासी, शैव संप्रदाय शुक्रवार यानी 23 अगस्त को, जबकि वैष्णव संप्रदाय के मंदिरों में शनिवार यानी 24 अगस्त को जन्माष्टमी मनाई जाएगी। स्मार्त संप्रदाय यानी जो लोग पंचदेवों की पूजा करते हैं। शैव संप्रदाय वाले शिवजी को प्रमुख मानते हैं। विष्णु के उपासक या विष्णु के अवतारों को मानने वाले वैष्णव कहलाते हैं। जन्माष्टमी को लेकर पंचांग भेद है, क्योंकि 23 अगस्त को उदया तिथि में रोहिणी नक्षत्र नहीं रहेगा, 24 अगस्त को अष्टमी तिथि नहीं है। श्रीकृष्ण का जन्म इन्हीं दोनों योग में हुआ था।
योगी सरकार भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की जन्मस्थली मथुरा में पहली बार भव्य और दिव्य श्रीकृष्ण जन्माष्टमी का आयोजन करने जा रही है। यह आयोजन 17 से 24 अगस्त तक पूरे आठ दिन मथुरा और आसपास के मंदिरों, कुंडों और धर्मस्थानों में आयोजित है। इसके लिए बड़े स्तर पर सांस्कृतिक व धार्मिक गतिविधियां आयोजित की गई। मथुरा से निकला रास असम में सत्रिय और मणिपुर में मणिपुरी रास के रूप में अत्यंत भव्य तरीके से पेश किया जाता है।
गुजरात में 15 तरह की रास शैलियां प्रसिद्ध हैं। लीला पर्व के रूप में रास की सभी प्रमुख शैलियों को आमंत्रित किया जाएगा। श्रीराम भारती कला केंद्र की कृष्णलीला व श्रीकृष्ण पर आधारित इंडोनेशिया, मलेशिया आदि के बैले नृत्य पेश किए जाएंगे। आठ दिनों तक चलने वाले इस आयोजन में लगभग 1000 लोक कलाकार भव्य शोभा यात्राएं निकालेंगे। श्रीकृष्ण की बाल लीलाओं पर आधारित झांकियों का प्रदर्शन होगा। मथुरा के कलाकारों की इन झांकियों को निर्णायक मंडल की राय पर पुरस्कृत किया जाएगा।
