भक्तों के जीवन से विघ्नों को हरनेवाले और उनके जीवन को मंगलमय बनाने वाले भगवान गणेश का हर साल की तरह इस साल भी अपने भक्तों के बीच आगमन हो रहा है. भगवान गणपति के आगमन की तैयारियों के साथ ही पूरा माहौल भक्तिमय हो गया है. लेकिन क्या आप जानते हैं कि गणेशोत्सव की शुरूआत कैसे हुई ? इस उत्सव को सार्वजनिक तौर पर शुरू करने का श्रेय आखिर किसे जाता है और इसके पीछे क्या मंशा रही होगी?
गणेशोत्सव के इतिहास पर गौर करें तो कहा जाता है है कि पेशवाओं ने गणेशोत्सव को बढ़ावा दिया था. शिवाजी महाराज की मां जीजाबाई ने पुणे में कस्बा गणपति नाम से प्रसिद्ध गणपति की स्थापना की थी. लेकिन सन 1893 में लोकमान्य बाल गंगाधर तिलक ने सार्वजनिक तौर पर गणेशोत्सव की शुरूआत की. हालांकि तिलक के इस प्रयास से पहले गणेश पूजा सिर्फ परिवार तक ही सीमित थी. तिलक उस समय एक युवा क्रांतिकारी और गर्म दल के नेता के रूप में जाने जाते थे. वे एक बहुत ही स्पष्ट वक्ता और प्रभावी ढंग से भाषण देने में माहिर थे. तिलक ‘पूर्ण स्वराज’ की मांग को लेकर संघर्ष कर रहे थे और वे अपनी बात को ज्यादा से ज्यादा लोगों तक पहुंचाना चाहते थे. इसके लिए उन्हें एक ऐसा सार्वजानिक मंच चाहिए था, जहां से उनके विचार अधिकांश लोगों तक पहुंच सके.
तिलक ने गणेशोत्सव को सार्वजनिक महोत्सव का रूप देते समय उसे महज धार्मिक कर्मकांड तक ही सीमित नहीं रखा, बल्कि आजादी की लड़ाई, छुआछूत दूर करने, समाज को संगठित करने के साथ ही उसे एक आंदोलन का स्वरूप दिया, जिसका ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य की नींव को हिलाने में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान रहा. अंग्रेजों की पूरी हुकूमत भी इस गणेशोत्सव से घबराने लगी. इतना ही नहीं इसके बारे में रोलेट समिति की रिपोर्ट में भी चिंता जताई गई.
इस रिपोर्ट में ज़िक्र किया गया था कि गणेशोत्सव के दौरान युवकों की टोलियां सड़कों पर घूम-घूम कर अंग्रेजी शासन विरोधी गीत गाती हैं व स्कूली बच्चे पर्चे बांटते हैं, जिसमें अंग्रेजी हुकूमत के खिलाफ हथियार उठाने और मराठों से शिवाजी की तरह विद्रोह करने का आह्वान किया जाता था.
गौरतलब है कि तिलक द्वारा सार्वजनिक तौर पर गणेशोत्सव की शुरूआत करने से दो फायदे हुए. एक तो वह अपने विचारों को जन-जन तक पहुंचा पाए और दूसरा यह कि इस उत्सव ने आम जनता को भी स्वराज के लिए संघर्ष करने की प्रेरणा दी और उन्हें जोश से भर दिया.
दरअसल, अंग्रेजों के शासन के दौरान भारतीय संस्कृति पर अंग्रेजी संस्कृति हावी हो रही थी. नौजवान अपनी सभ्यता और संस्कृति को भूल रहे थे और क्योंकि ईसाई त्योहार भव्यता के साथ मनाए जा रहे थे तो लोगों के मन में अपने धर्म के प्रति नकारात्मकता और अंग्रेजी आचार-विचार के प्रति आकर्षण बढ़ने लगा था. इसे देखते हुए जननेता लोकमान्य तिलक ने सोचा कि हिंदू धर्म को कैसे संगठित किया जाए. लोकमान्य तिलक ने विचार किया कि श्रीगणेश ही एकमात्र ऐसे देवता हैं जो समाज के सभी स्तरों में पूजनीय हैं.
धीरे-धीरे गणेशोत्सव पूरे महाराष्ट्र में सार्वजनिक रूप से मनाया जाने लगा. इसके बाद महाराष्ट्र से ही दूसरे राज्यों सें गणपति पूजा की संस्कृति का संचार हुआ, अब सामूहिक रूप के साथ साथ लोग अपने अपने घरों में गणेश उत्सव को मनाने लगें हैं और गणपति पूजा कर घर में संपन्नता और सौभाग्य की मंगल कामना करते हैं. भाद्रमास के शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्थी को पूरे भारत में गणेश चतुर्थी के रूप में मनाया जाता है. इस बार गणेश चतुर्थी के त्योहार की शुरुआत 4 सितम्बर से होगी. इस दिन लोग अपने घरों में भगवान गणेश की स्थापना करेंगे.
