वैदिक-गणित केवल गणित ही नहीं है, बल्कि एक सांस्कृतिक धरोहर है. वैदिक-गणित की संरचना का मुख्य उददेश्य है-प्राचीन भारत की बौद्धिक-सम्पदा (खासकर, गणितीय खगोल शास्त्र की) को प्रकाश में लाना.
वैदिक-गणित की पुस्तक में कुछ ऐसे तथ्यों को भी उजाग़र किया गया है जिस पर मतैक्य नहीं है. इस पुस्तक में भारतीय गणितज्ञों की बहुमूल्य देन को संक्षेप में प्रस्तुत किया गया है.
वैदिक-गणित के संबंध में विद्वानों के बीच अनेक प्रकार की भ्रान्तियां है. इसके साथ-साथ, कुछ मह्त्वपूर्ण प्राचीन भारत की गणितीय बौद्धिक-सम्पदा को विदेशी इतिहासकारों ने पाश्चात्य की देन कहा है. इस प्रकार की धारणा का निष्करण केवल वैदिक गणित का इतिहास ही कर सकता है.
गोवर्धन पुरी के परम पावन जगद्गुरु शंकराचार्य श्री भारतीकृष्णतीर्थ जी महाराज (1884-1960) ने वैदिक गणित या वेदों के सोलह सरल गणितीय सूत्र नाम का ग्रन्थ लिखा है. यह ग्रंथ आधुनिक पश्चिमी पद्धति से नितान्त भिन्न पद्धति का अनुसरण करता है, जो इस खोज पर आधारित है कि अन्तःप्रज्ञा से उच्चस्तरीय यथार्थ ज्ञान प्राप्त किया जा सकता है. इसमें यह प्रदर्शित किया गया है कि प्राचीन भारतीय पद्धति एवं उसकी गुप्त प्रक्रियाएँ गणित की विभिन्न समस्याओं को हल करने की क्षमता रखती हैं. जिस ब्रह्माण्ड में हम रहते हैं उसकी रचना गणितमूलक है तथा गणितीय माप और संबंधों में व्यक्त नियमों का अनुसरण करती है. इस ग्रंथ के चालीस अध्यायों में गणित के सभी विषय–गुणन, भाग, खण्डीकरण, समीकरण, फलन इत्यादि–का समावेश हो गया है तथा उनसे संबंधित सभी प्रश्नों को स्पष्ट रूप से समझाकर अद्यावधि ज्ञात सरलतम प्रक्रिया से हल किया गया है. यह जगद्गुरु श्री भारतीकृष्णतीर्थ जी महाराज की वर्षों की अविरत साधना का फल है. सोलह सूत्र जिन पर यह कृति आधारित है, अथर्ववेद के परिशिष्ट में आते हैं.
सूत्र पकड़िए और झटपट सवालों को हल करिए। यह सब वैदिक गणित की खूबियों से संभव है. बच्चों को भी इनकी खूबियाँ भा रही हैं. उदाहरण के तौर पर 1 गुणे नौ 171 होता है। अक्सर बच्चे पूरा पहाड़ा पढ़ने के बाद ही लिख पाते हैं. वैदिक गणित में सिर्फ नौ तक का पहाड़ा ही याद करने की जरुरत है। 1गुणे नौ के लिए वैदिक गणित का सूत्र बताता है कि 1अंक 10 और योग है। इसलिए 1 को दो भागों में बाँटिए. पहले भाग में 10 गुणे बराबर 0, दूसरे भाग में गुणे बराबर 81. दोनों को जोड़ दीजिये तो 171 होगा. श्री भट्ट ने एक और उदाहरण के जरिए वैदिक गणित की खूबी बताई. 88 का वर्ग करने में बच्चों को गुणा करने में काफी समय लगता है, वैदिक गणित में सिर्फ एक मिनट.
वैदिक-गणित में 16 मूल सूत्र दिये गये हैं. वैदिक गणित गणना की ऐसी पद्धति है, जिससे जटिल अंकगणितीय गणनाएं अत्यंत ही सरल, सहज व त्वरित संभव हैं. स्वामीजी ने इसकी शुरुआत बीसवीं सदी के आरम्भिक दिनों में किया। स्वामीजी के कथन के अनुसार वे सूत्र, जिन पर ‘वैदिक गणित’ नामक उनकी कृति आधारित है, अथर्ववेद के परिशिष्ट में आते हैं. परन्तु विद्वानों का कथन है कि ये सूत्र अभी तक के ज्ञात अथर्ववेद के किसी परिशिष्ट में नहीं मिलते. हो सकता है कि स्वामीजी ने ये सूत्र जिस परिशिष्ट में देखे हों वह दुर्लभ हो तथा केवल स्वामीजी के ही संज्ञान में हो. वस्तुतः आज की स्थिति में स्वामीजी की ‘वैदिक गणित’ नामक कृति स्वयं में एक नवीन वैदिक परिशिष्ट बन गई है.
