मशहूर शायर जॉन एलिया उर्दू बाग़ के एक महकते हुए फूल है, जिसकी खुशबू आज भी लोगों के रगों में समाई हुई है. उनका नाम ही अपने आप में कई दिलचस्प कहानियों का किस्सा है. 14 दिसम्बर 1931, यूपी के अमरोहा में जन्मे एलिया, भारत से बेहद मोहब्बत के बाद भी बटवारे के 10 साल बाद कराची जा के बस गए.
एलिया के वालिद अल्लामा शफीक हसन एलिया अरबी फारसी के जाने माने विद्वान थे. हिस्दुस्तान से दूर जाने के बाद भी जॉन एलिया का अपने मुल्क से मोहब्बत कभी कम नहीं हुआ और वह अपनी शायरी में अमरोहा से दूर रहने की कशमकश को बयां करते थे –
समंदर पर रहकर तास्नाकान हूं मैं,
बान तुम अब भी बह रही हो क्या।
एलिया के लिखावट का ढंग सभी शायरों से अलग था, तभी वह कभी किसी के समझ में नहीं आये. ना की सिर्फ लिखावट का ढंग बल्कि उनके जीने का तौर तरीका भी सभी शायरों से अलग था. उन्हें खुद के बर्बाद होने का ज़रा सा भी मलाल ना था ना ही उन्हें खुद के लिखावट पर कोई गुमान था. पाकिस्तान में एलिया की मुलाकात जाहिदा हिना से हुई जिनसे उन्हें बेहद बेशुमार इश्क हुआ शादी के बंधन में बंध जाने के बाद उनके तीन बच्चे हुआ लेकिन एलिया और जाहिदा का रिश्ता लम्बा वक्त नहीं चला और वह दोनों अलग हो गए. तलाक होने के बाद एलिया का मिजाज़ काफी बदल गया और उनके लिखावट में खुद के बर्बादी के अश्क नज़र आने लगे.

जॉन की लिखी शायरी इंसानियत और मोहब्बत पर होती है. दो मुल्कों के बीच तनाव के बावजूद एलिया की शायरी दोनों देशों के दिल में अपनी एक अलग जगह बनाई हुई है. बड़ी सी बड़ी बात को जॉन बड़े सादे शब्दों में बयां कर देते थे.
उनकी लिखी शायरी यह दर्शाती है कि वह जो भी लिखते थे डूबकर लिखते थे. उन्होंने ज़िन्दगी के हर उतार चढ़ाव को बड़ी गहराई के साथ लिखा है जो अक्सर पढने वालों के मन में एक छाप छोड़ जाती है. एलिया के जिस अंदाज़ में पूरी दुनिया फ़िदा थी उसमे कोई दो राय नहीं है की वह अंदाज़ था भी सबसे अलग.
सब कुछ होने के बावजूद एलिया ने अपनी ज़िंदगी एक फ़क़ीर की तरह गुज़ारी है जिसे किसी के होने ना होने से कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता था. वह अकेले में रहना ज्यादा पसंद करते थे और उनके ऐसे ही अंदाज़ लोगों को हैरान कर देते थे.
आठ नवम्बर 2002 में जॉन ने हमेशा के लिए वो महफूज़ घर जिसमे उनके इर्द गिर्द सिर्फ वही थे छोड़ दिया. और हमेशा के लिए चले गए. उनके मृत्यु के बाद भी उनकी शायरी आज भी जिंदा है. बूढ़े- बुजुर्ग, नौजवानों में उनकी शायरी एलिया के रूप में अमर है. एलिया बदनाम शायरों में से एक है उनके बदनामी और बर्बादी के किस्से काफी मशहूर है. लेकिन एलिया को कभी इन बातों का कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ा और अपनी ज़िंदगी के आखिरी पल तक उन्होंने ने अपनी बर्बादी का मलाल नहीं किया.
