कहते हैं संगीत ईश्वर का रूप है। सुर के संसार में अनहद जागता है। हमारा शास्त्र, गायन को पंचम वेद कहता है। भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीत की उत्पत्ति वेदों से मानी जाती है। सामवेद में संगीत के बारे में गहराई से चर्चा की गई है। यह माना जाता है कि ब्रह्मा ने नारद मुनि को संगीत वरदान में दिया था। चारों वेदों में, सामवेद के मंत्रों का उच्चारण उस समय के वैदिक सप्तक या समगान के अनुसार सातों स्वरों के प्रयोग के साथ किया जाता था। गुरु शिष्य परंपरा के अनुसार, शिष्य को गुरु से वेदों का ज्ञान मौखिक ही प्राप्त होता था। उनमें किसी प्रकार के परिवर्तन की संभावना से मनाही थी। इस तरह प्राचीन समय में वेदों व संगीत का कोई लिखित रूप न होने के कारण उनका मूल स्वरूप लुप्त होता गया। भरतमुनि द्वारा रचित नाट्यशास्त्र, भारतीय संगीत के इतिहास का प्रथम लिखित प्रमाण माना जाता है।
भारतीय संगीत से, सम्पूर्ण भारतवर्ष की गायन वादन कला का बोध होता है। भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीत की 2 प्रणालियाँ हैं। दक्षिण भारतीय संगीत पद्धति अथवा कर्नाटक संगीत प्रणाली और दूसरी हिन्दुस्तानी संगीत प्रणाली, जो कि समुचे उत्तर भारतवर्ष मे प्रचलित है। दक्षिण भारतीय संगीत कलात्मक खूबियों से परिपूर्ण है। और उसमें जनता जनार्दन को आकर्षित करने की और समाज मे संगीत कला की मौलिक विधियों द्वारा कलात्मक संस्कार करने की क्षमता है।
हिन्दुस्तानी संगीत प्रणाली के गायन वादन में, जन साधारण को कला की ओर आकर्षित करते हुए, भावना तथा रस का ऐसा स्त्रोत बहता है कि श्रोतृवर्ग स्वरसागर में डूब जाता है और न केवल मनोरन्जन होता है अपितु आत्मानन्द की अनुभूति भी होती है; जो कि योगीजन अपनी आत्मसमाधि मे लाभ करते हैं। हिन्दुस्तानी संगीत प्रणाली में निम्न गायन के प्रकार प्रचलित हैं – ध्रुवपद, लक्षण गीत, टप्पा, सरगम, कव्वाली, धमार, ठुमरी, तराना, भजन, गीत, खयाल, होरी, चतुरंग, गज़ल, लोक-गीत, नाट्य संगीत, सुगम संगीत, खटके और मुरकियाँ ।
