भारत एक ऐसा राष्ट्र जो सदियों से विश्वपटल पर अपनी अमिट छाप छोड़ते आया है। यहाँ वेद-पुराण धर्म-अध्यात्म, संस्कृति-सभ्यता, साहित्य, चिन्तन और नीतिशास्त्र की अभिन्न ज्ञान परम्परा देखने को मिलती है तथा साथ ही यहाँ कि ऐतिहासिक और सांस्कृतिक धरोहरें तो देखते ही बनती है।
किसी ने कहा है- ‘भारत देश को छोड़कर जितने भी देश है वो सभी भोग भूमि है लेकिन भारत वर्ष, वो तीर्थभूमि है।’
इसी तीर्थभूमि का हृदय मध्यप्रदेश और उसमें बसा प्राचीन नगर जबलपुर। जो ऐतिहासिक और सांस्कृतिक दृष्टि से अपना एक विशेष महत्व रखता है। प्राचीन काल में जबलपुर को कई नामों से जाना गया। पुराणों और किवदंतियों के अनुसार, जाबालि ऋषि की तपोभूमि होने के कारण ये ‘जाबालिपुरम’ कहलाया, अंग्रेज़ों ने अपने शासनकाल में इसे ‘जब्बलपोर’ नाम दिया तथा कलचुरी और गौंड राजाओं के शासन करने की वजह से ये ‘गौंडवाना और त्रिपुरी’ भी कहलाया।
लेकिन इन सभी नामों के अलावा इसका एक और नाम है जो आज तक लोगों की जुबानों पर चढ़ा हुआ है, जिसे आज भी नगरवासी बड़े गर्व से लेते हैं वह है, सांस्कृतिक प्रभावों की राजधानी- ‘संस्कारधानी’।
कहते हैं कि, यहाँ के लोगों की सांस्कृतिक, पारंपरिक और कलात्मक विशेषताओं से प्रभावित होकर संत विनोबा भावे ने इसे ‘संस्कारधानी’ नाम दिया।
कुछ लोगों का ये भी कहना है कि, एक बार भारत के प्रथम प्रधानमंत्री पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरू जबलपुर दौरे के लिए आए, वह यहाँ के नागरिकों की राजनीति और शालीनता से इतने अभिभूत हुए कि उन्होंने इस शहर को ‘संस्कारधानी’ नाम दे दिया।
नाम जिसने भी दिया हो लेकिन इस शहर का वैभवशाली इतिहास, इसकी संस्कृति, इसका पुरातन साहित्य ये बताता है कि ये संस्कारधानी क्यों है। आज आप गूगल पर जबलपुर खोजिए, सबसे पहले यही लिखा आएगा ‘जबलपुर- भारत की संस्कारधानी।’
यहाँ भेड़ाघाट की संगमरमरी चट्टानों के बीच कलकल बहती माँ नर्मदा, घाटों के घाट ग्वारीघाट से दिखता सूर्यास्त का अनुपम नज़ारा, बन्दरकुदनी में नौकाविहार तथा धुँआधार जलप्रपात का मनोहारी दृश्य। ये सभी विश्वभर के पर्यटकों के लिए हमेशा से आकर्षण का केन्द्र रहे है।
भेड़ाघाट, ग्वारीघाट और जबलपुर से प्राप्त जीवाश्मों से ये संकेत भी मिलते हैं कि यहाँ प्रागैतिहासिक काल के पुरापाषाण युग के मनुष्य का निवास स्थान था। मदन महल, नगर में स्थित कई ताल और गोंड राजाओं द्वारा बनवाए गए मंदिर इस स्थान की प्राचीन महिमा की जानकारी देते हैं।
‘ताल’ और ‘घाटों’ से सुशोभित इस नगर की सुंदरता देखते ही बनती है। ‘ताल’ इस नगर की झील और ‘घाट’ नर्मदा नदी के किनारें है। कहते हैं कि जबलपुर में स्थित 52 प्राचीन ताल-तलेैयों ने यहाँ की पहचान को बढ़ाया।
जबलपुर कई लेखकों व साहित्यकारों का आवास क्षेत्र रहा है। कवयित्री सुभद्राकुमारी चौहान और प्रसिद्ध पर्यावरणविद् अमृतलाल वेगड़ जैसे साहित्य के सूरमाओं का भी शहर है यह! वेगड़ जी ने अपने नर्मदा यात्रा वृत्तांत ‘तीरे तीरे नर्मदा’ में जबलपुर के प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य का बखूबी वर्णन किया है।
जबलपुर को संस्कारधानी नाम ऐसे ही नहीं मिल गया। कहा जाता है, यहां हुए आचार्य-मनीषियों और ऋषियों ने इसे अपने संस्कारों का उपहार दिया तब कहीं जाकर ये ‘संस्कारधानी’ कहलाया।
