कठपुतली का नाम सुनते ही जेहन में सबसे पहले राजस्थान का नाम आता है. माना जाता है कि कठपुतली लोक कला का इतिहास लगभग 1500 साल पुराना है. यह लोक कला राजस्थान के नागौर तथा मारवाड़ जिले के भट आदिवासी जाति के लोगों का पारंपरिक व्यवसाय भी है. राजस्थान के गांवों में कोई भी मेला, धार्मिक त्योहार या सामाजिक मेलजोल कठपुतली नाच के बिना अधूरा है. राजस्थान में कठपुतली नाच न केवल मनोरंजन का स्रोत है, बल्कि इस लोक कला के जरिये नैतिक और सामाजिक शिक्षा का प्रचार-प्रसार भी होता है तथा सामाजिक मुद्ददों और कुरीतियों को उजागर किया जाता है.
राजस्थान की ये लोक कला भारत और पूरे विश्व भर में प्रसिद्ध है. कठपुतली राजस्थानी भाषा के दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है. कठ का अर्थ होता है लकड़ी तथा पुतली का अर्थ होता है गुड़िया. कठपुतली मतलब पूरी तरह लकड़ी से बनी हुई गुड़िया, जिसमें सूती कपड़ा और धातु के तार भी काम में आते हैं. कठपुतलियों को तार के माध्यम से उंगलियों पर नचाया जाता है. खाट के माध्यम से एक मंच तैयार किया जाता है, जिस पर तख्त लगाया जाता है. कठपुतली को डोरी के जरिये बांधा जाता है, जो ऊपर से गुजरती है और उसका एक छोर कठपुतली कलाकारों के हाथ में होता है.
कठपुतली नाच की शुरुआत ढोलक की थाप से होती है और आमतौर पर महिला मंडली की ओर से कथा के माध्यम से सुनाई जाती है. कठपुतली नाच राजस्थान में अलग-अलग विषयों पर आधारित होता है. इनमें नागौर के अमरसिंह राठौर का संवाद काफी लोकप्रिय है.
खूबसूरती से रंगी गई कठपुतलियां आंध्र प्रदेश, कर्नाटक, उड़ीसा और केरल में काफी लोकप्रिय हैं. केरल के ‘तोलपवकूथु’ और आंध्र प्रदेश के ‘थोलु बोमलता’ में ज्यादातर पौराणिक कथाएं ही दर्शाई जाती हैं, जबकि कर्नाटक के ‘तोगलु गोम्बे अट्टा’ में धार्मिक विषय और चरित्र भी शामिल किए जाते हैं. उत्तर प्रदेश में इस कला का खूब प्रचलन रहा है. पहले कठपुतलियों का इस्तेमाल यहीं शुरू हुआ था. शुरू में इनका इस्तेमाल प्राचीनकाल के राजा महाराजाओं की कथाओं, धार्मिक, पौराणिक व्याख्यानों और राजनीतिक व्यंग्यों को प्रस्तुत करने के लिए किया जाता था. कठपुतलियां ओडिशा का ‘साखी कुंदेई’, असम का ‘पुतला नाच’, महाराष्ट्र का ‘मालासूत्री बहुली’ और कर्नाटक की ‘गोम्बेयेट्टा’ धागे से नचाई जाने वाली कठपुतलियों के रूप हैं.
