वैज्ञानिकों का कहना है कि इस 8वें महाद्वीप जीलैंडिया(Zealandia) का 94 फीसदी हिस्सा पानी के नीचे डूबा हुआ है। हालांकि विश्व के इस 8वें महाद्वीप जीलैंडिया(Zealandia) को 2017 में ही वैज्ञानिकों ने खोज लिया था। धरती के 8वें महाद्वीप जीलैंडिया को लेकर वैज्ञानिक खोजकर्ताओं ने ने रिपोर्ट जारी की है। नई स्टडी में वैज्ञानिकों ने जीलैंडिया के क्षेत्र को लेकर एक नक्शा जारी किया है। इस नए नक्शा के अनुसार वैज्ञानिकों द्वारा खोजा गया यह 8वां महाद्वीप कभी गोंडवाना भूमि का हिस्सा था।
जीलैंडिया महाद्वीप लगभग 94 फीसदी समुद्र के नीचे है जबकि इसका मात्र 6 फीसदी हिस्सा ही पानी के ऊपर है । जीलैंडिया(Zealandia) का यह 6 फीसदी वाला हिस्सा न्यूजीलैंड(Newzeland) के आसपास के द्वीप से मिलकर बनता है। कहा जाता है कि विश्व के 8वें महाद्वीप जीलैंडिया(Zealandia) की खोज सबसे पहले 1642 में एक डच व्यापारी और नाविक ‘एबेल तस्मान’ ने की थी। डच(Dutch) व्यापारी एबेल तस्मान महान दक्षिणी महाद्वीप पर जाना चाहते थे। हालांकि एबेल तस्मान इसमें सफल नहीं हो पाए थे। रिपोर्ट की माने तो 2017 तक भूवैज्ञानिकों को यह भी पता नहीं था कि जिस महाद्वीप को वह इतने समय से खोज रहे थे वह यहीं छिपा है।
हालांकि मंगलवार को भूवैज्ञानिकों और भूकंप विज्ञानियों की एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय टीम ने ‘टेक्टोनिक्स’(Tectonics Journal) नामक पत्रिका में जीलैंडिया से संबंधित एक अपडेट मैप(Updated Map) प्रकाशित किया है। रिपोर्ट में बताया गया है कि समुद्रतल से खोदी गई चट्टानों आदि के नमूनों की मदद से आंकड़े जुटाए गए। प्राप्त आंकड़ो(Data) से वह इसके स्वरूप और संरचना का अनुमान लगाने में सक्षम हुए। रिपोर्ट के निष्कर्ष में बताया गया है कि यह स्टडी अंटार्कटिका(Antarctica) के जियोलॉजिकल पैटर्न(Geological Pattern) को स्टडी(Study) कर के बनाई गई है। भूवैज्ञानिकों ने न्यूजीलैंड के पश्चिमी तट पर कैंपबेल पठार के पास एक सबडक्शन(Subduction) क्षेत्र होने की संभावना जताई है। वैज्ञानिकों ने बताया कि सबडक्शन तब होता है जब कोई एक समुद्री प्लेट दूसरी महाद्वीपीय प्लेट से टकराती है और नीचे की ओर खिसक जाती है।
शोधकर्ताओं ने समुद्र तल से लाए गए सैपलों का अध्यय करके जीलैंडिया के मौजूदा मानचित्र को और बेहतर करने की कोशिश की है। न्यूजीलैंड क्राउन रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट(GNS) के शोधकर्ताओं(Researcher) ने भी इस बात की पुष्टि की है कि इस नए महाद्वीप का ज्यादातर भाग पानी के नीचे है। जिस पर आगे काम चल रहा है। मीडिया रिपोर्ट्स के मुताबिक जीलैंडिया लगभग 49 लाख स्कॉयर(Square) किलोमीटर क्षेत्र में फैला है। बताते चलें कि साल 2017 में भूवैज्ञानिकों का एक ग्रुप तब काफी चर्चा में आया था जब उन्होंने अभी तक के भौगोलिक इतिहास की खोज को धत्ता बताते हुए 8वे नए महाद्वीप जीलैंडिया के होने की बात की थी। जीलैंडिया मूल रूप से प्राचीन महाद्वीप गोंडवाना(Gondwana) का हिस्सा था, जो लगभग 50 करोड़ साल पहले बना होगा। जो कि लगभग 10 करोड़ साल पहले संभवत: पानी के नीचे डूबने लगा होगा।
