इत्र की शुरूआत कहां से हुई यह बताना इतना भी आसान नहीं। इसके पीछे भी कई सारे दिलचस्प कहानियां है। कहा जाता है कि हजारों साल पहले सुमेर के निवासी अपने शरीर पर चमेली,लिली और शराब तक को रगड़ लेते थे ताकि उनसे एक अलग प्रकार की गंध आए। धीरे-धीरे यहां के निवासी फूलों और पत्तों को पीसकर शरीर में लगाने की यह कला ने इस कदर का चलन पकड़ा कि यह एक विधि की तरह इस्तेमाल में आने लगा।
सुमेर के साथ-साथ हमारे देश भारत में इत्र और इससे जुड़ी परंपरा कोई आज की बात नहीं बल्कि कई वर्षों से चली आ रही है। भारतीय ग्रंथों और पौराणिक कथाओं में भी सुगंध से संबंधित नाम प्रचलित है। भारतीय संस्कृति के सबसे पुराने वेद ऋगवेद के दूसरे अष्टक के अश्वमेध यज्ञ से जुड़ी ऋचा में सुगंध वाले पदार्थों के साथ आहुति दी जाती थी। यजुर्वेद के महामृत्युंजय मंत्र में सुगंधिम शब्द को लिया गया है। माना जाता है कि प्राचीन समय में इत्र को सौंदर्य के लिए इस्तेमाल किया जाता था। इस समय में तुलसी,लोबान,धुप आदि से सुगंध की व्यवस्था के बारे में जानकारी मिलती है। पंचतंत्र के लेखक विष्णु शर्मा ने भी इत्र का बखान करते हुए इसे सोने से भी ऊपर रखा है। गंगाधारा में सुगंधित उत्पादों की वास्तविक तैयारियों की छह प्रक्रियाओं के बारे में बताया गया है। गंगाधारा श्रेणियों के रूप में 8 सुगंधित सामग्रियों की बात करता है-
पत्तियाँ-तुलसी,आदि
फूल-केसर,चमेली,सुगंधपशु,आदि
फल-काली मिर्च,जायफल,इलायची,आदि
छाल-कपूर का पेड़,लौंग का पेड़,आदि
जड़ें-नटग्रास,पावोनिया ओडोराटा,आदि
जंगल-चंदन,देवदार,आदि
पौधों से गंध का निर्वहन-कपूर
कार्बनिक तत्व-कस्तूरी,शहद,मक्खन,घी,आदि। आज भी पारंपरिक इत्र बनाने के लिए इन सभी सामग्रियों का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है।
समय का पहिया घूमता गया और मुगल काल के शासन ने इस कला को बखूबी निखारा। कुछ का तो कहना है कि गुलाब से सुगंधित इत्र निकालने की कला मुगल बादशाह जहांगीर की बेगम नूरजहां की मां अस्मत बेगम ने शुरू की थी। धीरे-धीरे यह कला आम से खास हो गई और मुगल दरबार की शान भी। इत्र लगाने और इससे जुड़े व्यपार को मुगलों ने ही चलाया और बढ़ाया। मुगलों के पतन और इसी बीच अवध में नबाबी शासन ने इस कला को पाला और पोसा। अवध के नवाब वाजिद अली शाह जो कि कत्थक में काफी निपुण थे ने भी इत्र को काफी विन्यास दिया।
भारत में जब कभी भी महक की बात हो और कन्नौज का जिक्र ना आए हुआ है कभी ऐसा भला। महक का जिक्र और कन्नौज की याद अकेली नहीं आती। कहा जाता है कि कन्नौज में खुशबू के इस व्यापार को करीब 600 साल से ऊपर हो गए हैं। हालांकि कुछ लोगों का मानना है कि इत्र की यह यात्रा फारस से होते हुए यहां तक आई थी।
कन्नौज की इत्र और इत्रदान की कारीगरी के क्या कहने। क्या आपको पता है कि कन्नौज के इत्र को भारत की सरकार ने जीआई टैग दिया है यानी कि भौगोलिक सांकेतिक उत्पाद जिससे यहां बनने वाले इत्र की खुशबू को आसानी से पूरी दुनिया में फैलाई जा सके।
इत्र को कई पारंपरिक तरीकों से बनाया जाता है जिनमें पारंपरिक देग के साथ-साथ भपका और भट्टी से इत्र बनाने की कला प्रचलन में है। इसके अलावे गच्छी और कुप्पी की मदद से भी इत्र बनाने की खास कला यहां के इत्र की खुशबू को चार-चांद लगाती है। ऐसे थोड़ी इत्र की महकें जिंदगी को विस्तार देती हैं। इत्र के रूप में जिंदगी की इक अलग महक को सलाम।
