पटियाला पैग के बारे में तो खूब सुना होगा, लेकिन क्या इसके पीछे की कहानी जानते हैं
HISTORY OF PATIYALA PEG: आप व्हिस्की पीने के शौकीन हो या ना हो लेकिन आपने एक न एक बार पटियाला पैग के बारे में जरूर सुना होगा। लेकिन क्या आप जानते हैं कि आखिर इस पैग का नाम किसी स्थान विशेष के नाम पर कैसे पड़ गया। कहते हैं एक बार पटियाला पैग लगा लो तो अगली सुबह तक तो आप निश्चित ही झूमते रहोगे। दरअसल पटियाला पैग में व्हिस्की की मात्रा सामान्य पैग से बहुत ज्यादा रहती है। इतनी की आप अगर इसे पहले कभी नहीं पी है तो शायद पूरी जिंदगी इसे भूल ना पायें।
अक्सर जश्न के मौकों पर मेहमानों के बीच पटियाला पैग के खुमार को लेकर चर्चाएं आम होती हैं। लेकिन सवाल यह उठता है कि आखिर पटियाला पैग में ऐसा क्या है कि इसे पंजाब के पटियाला शहर का ही नाम दिया गया है किसी और शहर या स्थान का नहीं। इन सभी सवालों के लिए हमें पंजाब के कद्दावर नेता कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह जी द्वारा लिखी गई पुस्तक कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह: द पीपुल्स महाराजा (Captain Amarinder Singh: The People’s Maharaja) को देखना होगा।
क्या आप जानते हैं कि कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह के पिता कौन थे। पटियाला के महाराज भूपिंदर सिंह () कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह के पिता थे और पटियाला पैग की कहानी इन्हीं के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। महाराज भूपिंदर सिंह ने 1900 से लेकर 1938 तक पटियाल रियासत की कमान संभाली। एक बार की बात है। महाराजा भूपिंदर सिंह की अंग्रेजों के साथ मैच की शर्त लगी और महाराजा को यह मैच किसी भी हालत में जितनी थी। इसके लिए महाराजा ने एक तिकड़म सोचा और मैच के एक रात पहले अंग्रेजों जो कि अगली दिन टीम का हिस्सा बनने वाले थे, को पार्टी के लिए आमंत्रित किया। और अंग्रेजों को खूब बड़े बड़े पैग पिलाना शुरू किया। अंग्रेजों ने भी मुफ्त का माल समझकर खूब पिया। एक तो मुफ्त की व्हीस्की और वो भी इतने बड़े पैग की कभी पी ना हो। बस अगले दिन इसका तिकड़म काम आ गया और पैग के असर ने महाराजा को काफी आसानी से जीत दिला दी।
अगले दिन जब वायसराय का दूत महाराज के इस तिकड़म की शिकायत करने पहुंचा तो महाराजा ने जवाब में कहा कि हमारे यहां पैग इतने ही बड़े होते हैं। हम दिल खोल कर पिलाने में विश्वास करते हैं। महाराज के इस जवाब का उनके पास कोई काट नहीं था। फिर क्या था यहां से ही शुरूआत हो गई पटियाला पैग की।
कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह ने अपनी पुस्तक में लिखा है कि पटियाला पैग में करीब 120 एमएल के आसपास व्हिस्की आती है। आमतौर पर जब ग्लास को पकड़ी जाती है तो नीचे की अंगुली से अंगूठे के पास तक में व्हिस्की भरी जाती है। यह है असली पटियाला पैग की मात्रा।
