मार्क टुली: पत्रकारिता में नाम ही काफी है
भारतीय पत्रकारिता और हिंदी पत्रकारिता में जब भी गंभीर पत्रकारिता का उल्लेख किया जाता है, अपने आप मार्क टुली का नाम लोगों के मन-मस्तिषक में आ जाता है. बीबीसी हिंदी के लिए की गई उनकी रिपोर्टिंग आज भी लोगों को याद है. सरोकार की बात करने वाले मार्क टुली को सुनने वाले ये कतई नहीं समझ पाएंगे कि उनका सरोकार भारत से नहीं है. ऐसे कुछ लोग, जिनका मूल भले ही विदेशी हो, लेकिन वे भारतीयता के परिचायक बन गए, उनमें से एक नाम वरिष्ठ पत्रकार मार्क टुली का भी है.
अपने एक साक्षात्कार में मार्क टुली ने बताया था कि पत्रकारिता उनकी पसंद नहीं थी, लेकिन नियति को यही मंजूर था. भारत जो शुरू में उनको पहचान नहीं दिला पाया, आज वही उनका घर है. जैसा सम्मान उन्हें भारत में मिला, उससे उन्हें काफी खुशी मिली. उन्होंने बताया था कि उस बीबीसी को खबरों के लिए विश्वनीय स्रोत माना जाता था. लोग सरकारी समाचार प्रसारकों पर भरोसा नहीं करते थे. मैंने पूरे भारत की यात्रा की. यह देश बहुत प्यारा है और मेरे लिए यही आश्चर्य की बात है कि पत्रकारिता मेरी नियति रही है.
मार्क टुली का जन्म 1935 में एक सफल व्यवसायी के घर पैदा हुए थे, जिनकी छह संतानें थीं और उस समय के कलकत्ता में उनका कारोबार था. उनके पूर्वज 1857 के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के भी पहले से यहां रह रहे थे. परदादा के पिताजी पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश में अफीम के कारोबारी थे और दादाजी पटसन का व्यवसाय करते थे. मां आज के बांग्लादेश में पैदा हुई थी और उनका जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ था. उनकी जिंदगी बिल्कुल ब्रिटेन के लोगों जैसी रही है. एक साक्षात्कार में मार्क टुली ने बताया था कि उन्हें इस बात की बिल्कुल भी अनुमति नहीं थी कि भारत से उनकी पहचान हो. इस संस्कृति का हिस्सा बनने से मना किया जाता था. यूरोपीय आया हिंदी या अन्य भाषाएं सीखने से मना करती थी और इस बात पर जोर डालती थी कि सिर्फ अंग्रेजी ही बोलें.
उन दिनों ब्रितानी बच्चों को शिक्षा के लिए स्वदेश भेजने का रिवाज था, लेकिन मार्क टुली जिस समय बड़े हो रहे थे, उस समय पश्चिमी दुनिया में द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध अपना कहर बरपा रहा था. इस कारण मार्क को प्रारंभिक शिक्षा के लिए दार्जिलिंग भेजा गया.
भारतीय परिवेश में रचे-बसे मार्क टुली का लालन-पालन भले ही अंग्रेजियत के साथ हुआ, लेकिन उनको भारत से लगाव बचपन से ही रहा है. जाने-माने ब्रॉडकास्टर व लेखक कभी पादरी बनने की आकांक्षा रखते थे और इसके लिए उन्होंने धर्मशास्त्र में डिग्री भी हासिल की. लेकिन बाद में घटनाक्रम कुछ ऐसा बदला उन्हें भारत वापस लौटना पड़ा.
आपातकाल के दौरान वर्ष 1975 में टुली ने 40 विदेशी पत्रकारों, जिनमें द गार्जियन और द वॉशिंटन पोस्ट के पत्रकार भी शामिल थे, के साथ भारत छोड़ दिया. वे लंदन वापस लौट गए. जब आपातकाल समाप्त हुआ, तो वह बीबीसी के ब्यूरो चीफ बनकर भारत लौटे. तब से वह भारत में ही रह रहे हैं. उन्होंने ‘नो फुल स्टॉप्स इन इंडिया’ और ‘इंडिया इन स्लो मोशन’ नाम से कुछ दिलचस्प किताबें लिखी हैं. उनकी नवीनतम पुस्तक ‘अपकंट्री टेल्स: वन्स अपॉन ए टाइम इन द हार्ट ऑफ इंडिया’ कहानियों का संग्रह है. भारत सरकार ने 1992 में उन्हें पद्मश्री और 2005 में पद्मभूषण पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया है. वर्ष 2002 में प्रिंस चार्ल्स ने मार्क टुली को बर्किंघम पैलेस में नाइट की उपाधि प्रदान की थी.
