सनातन संस्कृति में दशावतार की परिकल्पना है. उसी दशावतार में एक हैं भगवान श्रीकृष्ण. उनकी लीलाओं का अखिल विश्व में प्रचार-प्रसार हुआ है. गीता के रूप में कर्मयोग के जिस सिद्धांत को उन्होंने दिया, आज वह एक जीवन दर्शन है. इसकॅान उनके तमाम प्रसंगों का प्रचार-प्रसार कर रहा है.
अंतर्राष्ट्रीय कृष्णभावनामृत संघ या इस्कॉन (इंटरनेशनल सोसाईटी फॉर कृष्णा कॉनशियस्नेस् -इस्कॉन), को हरे कृष्ण आंदोलन के नाम से भी जाना जाता है. कृष्ण भक्ति में लीन इस अंतरराष्ट्रीय सोसायटी की स्थापना श्री अभयचरणारविन्द भक्तिवेदांत स्वामी प्रभुपादजी ने वर्ष 1966 में न्यूयॉर्क सिटी में की थी. गुरु भक्ति सिद्धांत सरस्वती गोस्वामी ने प्रभुपाद महाराज से कहा कि तुम युवा हो, तेजस्वी हो, कृष्ण भक्ति का विदेश में प्रचार-प्रसार करो.
गुरु आदेश का पालन करने के लिए उन्होंने 59 वर्ष की आयु में संन्यास ले लिया. गुरु आज्ञा पूर्ण करने का प्रयास करने लगे. काफी कोशिशों और अथक मेहनत के बाद सत्तर वर्ष की आयु में न्यूयॉर्क में कृष्णभवनामृत संघ की स्थापना की. न्यूयॉर्क से प्रारंभ हुई कृष्ण भक्ति की निर्मल धारा शीघ्र ही विश्व के कोने-कोने में बहने लगी. स्वामी प्रभुपादजी के अथक प्रयासों के कारण दस वर्ष के कम समय में ही समूचे विश्व में 108 मंदिरों का निर्माण हो चुका था. इस समय इस्कॉन समूह के लगभग 400 से अधिक मंदिरों की स्थापना हो चुकी है.
जो लोग इस्काॅन से जुड़ते हैं, उन्हें एक घंटा शास्त्राध्ययन करना होता है. इसमें गीता और भारतीय धर्म-इतिहास से जुड़े शास्त्रों का अध्ययन करना होता है. इसके साथ ही हरे कृष्णा-हरे कृष्णा नाम की 16 बार माला करना होती है. आज कई देश हरे रामा-हरे कृष्णा के पावन भजन से गुंजायमान होने लगे. अपने साधारण नियम और सभी जाति-धर्म के प्रति समभाव के चलते इस मंदिर के अनुयायियों की संख्या लगातार बढ़ती जा रही है. हर वह व्यक्ति जो लीलाधर कृष्ण में लीन होना चाहता है, उनका यह मंदिर स्वागत करता है.
शांति की तलाश में पूरब की गीता पश्चिम के लोगों के सिर चढ़कर बोलने लगी. इस्काॅन के मतावलंबियों को चार सरल नियमों का पालन करना होता है-
धर्म के चार स्तंभ हैं – तप, शौच, दया तथा सत्य. इसी का व्यावहारिक पालन करने हेतु इस्कॉन के कुछ मूलभूत नियम हैं. तप यानी किसी भी प्रकार का नशा नहीं. चाय, कॉफी भी नहीं. शौच यानी अवैध स्त्री-पुरुष गमन नहीं. दया यानी मांसाहार, अभक्ष्य भक्षण नहीं. (लहसुन, प्याज भी नहीं). सत्य यानी जुआ नहीं. शेयर बाजारी भी नहीं.
