उज्जैन: जहां विराजते हैं महाकाल
सनातन संस्कृति में द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंग की महिमा सबको पता है. आमतौर पर हर हरेक शिवलिंग उत्तरामुखी होते हैं, लेकिन प्रसिद्ध ऐतिहासिक नगरी उज्जैन में दक्षिणमुखी शिवलिंग हैं. यहां स्वयं महाकाल विराजते हैं. उज्जैन को प्राचीन ग्रंथों में उज्जयिनी कहा गया है. इसका प्रमाणिक इतिहास ई. सन 600 वर्ष के लगभग का मिलता है. उस समय में भारत में सोलह महाजनपद थे. उनमें से अवंति जनपद भी एक था. अवंति जनपद उत्तर एवं दक्षिण दो भागों में विभक्त था. उत्तरी भाग की राजधानी उज्जयिनी थी तथा दक्षिण भाग की राजधानी महिष्मति थी.
सौर पुराण में महाकाल को दिव्यलिंग कहा गया है. कालचक्र की शुरुआत महाकाल से होती है. प्रलय काल में सारा संसार अंधेरे में डूबा था और महाकाल ने ब्रह्माजी को सृष्टि का निर्माण करने को कहा. शिव के द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंगों में उज्जैन के महाकाल प्रथम पूज्य हैं. त्रिलोक में (भू, भुवः और स्वः) धरती, आकाश और पाताल में तीन शिवलिंग हैं, जो प्रथम पूज्य हैं. आकाश में तारे लिंग स्वरूप हैं, पाताल में हाटकेश्वर और धरती पर महाकाल.
प्राचीन समय में अवंतिका, उज्जयिनी, विशाला, प्रतिकल्पा, कुमुदवती, स्वर्णशृंगा, अमरावती आदि अनेक नामों से जाना जाने वाला नगर ही आज उज्जैन के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है. सभ्यता के उदय से ही यह नगर भारत के प्रमुख तीर्थ-स्थल के रूप में जाना गया. पवित्र क्षिप्रा के दाहिने तट पर स्थित इस नगर को भारत की सप्तपुरियों में से एक माना जाता है. ब्रह्माजी ने महाकाल से प्रार्थना की कि वे महाकाल वन में निवास करें. यह घटना पुरातन काल में उज्जयिनी में हुई और तब से महाकाल उज्जैन में निवास कर रहे हैं.
यह क्षिप्रा नदी के किनारे बसा मध्य प्रदेश का एक प्रमुख धार्मिक नगर है. उज्जैन महाराजा विक्रमादित्य के शासन काल में उनके राज्य की राजधानी थी. इसको कालिदास की नगरी भी कहा जाता है. उज्जैन में हर 12 वर्ष के बाद सिंहस्थ कुंभ का मेला जुड़ता है. महाभारत और पुराणों में उल्लेख है कि वृष्णि संघ के कृष्ण व बलराम उज्जैन में गुरु संदीपन के आश्रम में विद्या प्राप्त करने आए थे. कृष्ण की पत्नी मित्रवृन्दा उज्जैन की राजकुमारी थीं और उनके दो भाई विन्द एवं अनुविन्द ने महाभारत के युद्ध में कौरवों की तरफ से युद्ध किया था. उज्जैन का एक अन्य अत्यंत प्रतापी राजा हुआ है, जिसका नाम चंडप्रद्योत था. ईसा की छठी सदी में वह उज्जैन का शासक था. उसकी पुत्री वासवदत्ता एवं वत्स राज्य के राजा उदयन की प्रेम कथा इतिहास में बहुत प्रसिद्ध है. बाद के समय में उज्जैन मगध साम्राज्य का अभिन्न अंग बन गया था. राजा विक्रमादित्य के दरबार के नवरत्नों में महाकवि कालिदास प्रमुख थे.
महाकवि कालिदास को उज्जयिनी अत्यधिक प्रिय थी. इसी कारण से कालिदास ने अपने काव्य ग्रंथों में उज्जयिनी का अत्यधिक मनोरम और सुंदर वर्णन किया है.
भगवान महाकालेश्वर की संध्या कालीन आरती को और क्षिप्रा नदी के पौराणिक और ऐतिहासिक महत्त्व से भली-भांति परिचित होकर उसका अत्यंत मनोरम वर्णन किया, जो आज भी साहित्य जगत् कि अमूल्य धरोहर है.
अपनी रचना मेघदूत में महाकवि कालिदास ने उज्जयिनी का बहुत ही सुंदर वर्णन करते हुए कहा है कि- जब स्वर्गीय जीवों को अपना पुण्य क्षीण हो जाने पर पृथ्वी पर आना पड़ा, तब उन्होंने विचार किया कि हम अपने साथ स्वर्ग भूमि का एक खंड (टुकड़ा) भी ले चलते हैं. वही स्वर्ग खंड उज्जयिनी है.
