पूर्व राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी को भारत रत्न मिलना यह साबित करता है कि राजनीतिक और सार्वजनिक जीवन में उन्होंने किस प्रकार से सिद्धांत और शुचिता का निर्वहन किया. सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान ‘भारत रत्न’ से अब तक देश की 48 हस्तियों को सम्मानित किया जा चुका है. अंतिम बार यह सम्मान साल 2015 में पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी और पंडित मदन मोहन मालवीय (मरणोपरांत) को दिया गया था.
भारत रत्न भारत का सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान है. यह सम्मान राष्ट्रीय सेवा के लिए दिया जाता है. इन सेवाओं में कला, साहित्य, विज्ञान, सार्वजनिक सेवा और खेल शामिल है. इस सम्मान की स्थापना 2 जनवरी 1954 में भारत के तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति राजेंद्र प्रसाद द्वारा की गई थी. पहला भारत रत्न डॉक्टर सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन को दिया गया था.
पूर्व राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी का जन्म 11 दिसंबर 1935 में कोलकाता के छोटे गांव मराठी में हुआ था, जोकि बीरभूम जिले में पड़ता है. प्रणब मुखर्जी का जन्म एक ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था. प्रणब मुखर्जी कांग्रेस के दिग्गज नेता रहे. राष्ट्रपति बनने से पहले इन्होंने देश में कई अहम जिम्मेदारियां संभाली जिनमें वित्त मंत्रालय सहित कई अहम पद थे. प्रणब ने राष्ट्रीय और आन्तरिक रूप से अपने नेतृत्व का लोहा मनाया है.
प्रणब को कांग्रेस पार्टी का संकटमोचन कहा जाता है. वह कांग्रेस की तीन पीढ़ियों के साथ कम कर चुके हैं. प्रणब मुखर्जी के नेतृत्व में ही भारत ने अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय मुद्रा कोष के ऋण की 1.1 अरब अमेरिकी डॉलर की अन्तिम किस्त नहीं लेने का गौरव अर्जित किया था. सन 1980-1985 के दौरान प्रधानमंत्री की अनुपस्थिति में उन्होंने केन्द्रीय मंत्रीमंडल की बैठकों की अध्यक्षता की थी.
पूर्व राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी को इससे पहले 2008 में दूसरे सर्वोच्च नागरिक पुरस्कार पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित किया गया था. उन्हें 1997 में सर्वश्रेष्ठ सांसद का भी सम्मान मिल चुका है. एक सर्वेक्षण के अनुसार, साल 1984 में दुनिया के पांच सर्वोत्तम वित्त मन्त्रियों में से एक प्रणव मुखर्जी भी थे. राष्ट्रपति के पद से हटने के बाद भी मुखर्जी ने कई मामलों पर खुलकर अपनी राय रखी. उनके इन बयानों से पता चलता है कि अबतक उन्होंने सार्वजनिक जीवन में खुद को स्थापित रखा है.
