बिहार राज्य में स्थित बौद्ध गया शहर में बना महाबोधि मंदिर बौद्ध धर्म का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण केन्द्र और पवित्र स्थानों में माना जाता है। यहीं पर बोधि वृक्ष के नीचे गौतम बुद्ध को केवल्य ज्ञान की प्राप्ति हुई थी। यह मंदिर वास्तुकला व बौद्ध धर्म की परम्पराओं का सुन्दर नमूना है। विभिन्न धर्मों एवं सम्प्रदायों के लोग यहां आध्यात्मिक शांति की तलाश में आते हैं।
गया जिले के पास निरंजना नदी के तट पर स्थित उरुविल्व नामक ग्राम में कपिलवस्तु के राजकुमार सिद्धार्थ ने 49 दिनों तक कठोर तपस्या की। चूंकि वह पीपल के वृक्ष की छांवमें बैठ कर तपस्या कर रहे थे और उन्हें बैसाख मास की पूर्णिमा को दिव्य ज्ञान की प्राप्ति हुई थी, इसीलिए उस वृक्ष को बोधिवृक्ष और उस तिथि को बुद्ध पूर्णिमा के नाम से जाना जाता है।
पटना से 100 किलोमीटर दूर है बोधगया। बोधगया में बोधि वृक्ष के नीचे तपस्या कर रहे गौतम बुद्ध को ज्ञान की प्राप्ति हुई थी, इसी के बाद वह भगवान कहलाए। इतिहासकार कहते हैं कि यहां पर अभी जो पेड़ है वह चौथी पीढ़ी का है। इसे सम्राट अशोक की पत्नी ने कटवा दिया था। 2002 में यूनेस्को द्वारा इस शहर को विश्व विरासत स्थल घोषित किया गया। करीब 2630 ईसा पूर्व में राजकुमार सिद्धार्थ ने दुनियाभर में लोगों के दुख से व्यथित होकर सांसारिक मोह माया को त्याग दिया था। वह ज्ञान की खोज में निकल पड़े थे और बोधगया पहुंचे। यहां पर पांच साल तक तपस्या के बाद पीपल के पेड़ के नीचे उन्हें ज्ञान की प्राप्ति हुई थी। इसके बाद ही वह भगवान बुद्ध कहलाए। बुद्ध ज्ञान की प्राप्ति के बाद दुनिया को शांति और अहिंसा का पाठ पढ़ाने के लिए निकल पड़े थे। चीनी यात्री ह्वेनसांग ने अपने यात्रा संस्मरण में बोधगया के प्रसिद्ध बोध मंदिर को महाबोधि मंदिर का नाम दिया था। सम्राट अशोक की इस बोधि वृक्ष के प्रति गहरी श्रद्धा थी। इससे नाराज उनकी पत्नी ने इस पेड़ को कटवा दिया था।
इसी स्थान पर सम्राट अशोक ने तीसरी शताब्दी में पहली बार एक स्तूप का निर्माण कराया था। बाद में कुषाणराज कनिष्क ने एक मंदिर बनवाया। सन 1205 में बख्तियार खिलजी ने इस मंदिर को तुड़वा दिया। 1876 में जनरल कनिंघम और बेगलर को यहां पर हुई खुदाई के दौरान इस मंदिर के अवशेष मिले, जिसके बाद शिल्पकारों की मदद से इसको दोबारा बनाया गया।
बोधगया में महाबोधि मंदिर और ऐतिहासिक पीपल के वृक्ष के अलावा तिब्बती मंदिर, चीन का मंदिर, जापानी मंदिर, भूटान का मंदिर और पुरातात्विक संग्रहालय सभी दर्शनीय हैं। बौद्ध मंदिर के स्तूप ग्रेनाइट पत्थरों सेबने हैं। इसमें लगभग 30 बड़े झरोखे हैं। बोधगया से थोड़ी ही दूरी पर ढोगेश्वरी गुफा है, जहां गौतम बुद्ध ने चिंतन-मनन किया था। बोधगया का मुख्य आकर्षण है-जापानी बौद्ध अनुयायियों द्वारा नवनिर्मित भगवान बुद्ध की विशालतम प्रतिमा, जो बहुत दूर से ही नज़र आ जाती है। इसे चुनार के गुलाबी पत्थरों से बनाया गया है। यह प्रतिमा 80 फीट ऊंची और 51 फीट चौड़ी है। लगभग 1 करोड़ रुपये की लागत वाली इस प्रतिमा के निर्माण में चार वर्षों का समय लगा। 18 नवंबर 1990 को बौद्ध धर्मगुरु दलाई लामा ने इसका अनावरण किया। यहां मौज़ूद विशाल धर्मचक्र पर महात्मा बुद्ध के बहुत सारे उपदेश अंकित हैं। ‘बुद्धं शरणं गच्छामि की ध्वनि से यह मंदिर हमेशा जीवंत प्रतीत होता है और शाम होते ही रंग-बिरंगी रोशनी से जगमगा उठता है
बौद्ध गया में 1934 ई. में बना तिब्बतियन मठ, 1936 में बना बर्मी विहार तथा इसी से लगा थाईमठ, इंडोसन−निप्पन−जापानी मंदिर, चीनी मंदिर एवं भूटानी मठ पर्यटकों के लिए दर्शनीय स्थल हैं। बौद्ध गया में स्थित पुरातात्विक संग्रहालय अपने आप में बेजोड़ है। बोध गया घूमने का सबसे अच्छ समय अप्रैल−मई में आने वाली बुद्ध जयंति का अवसर है जब यहां सिद्धार्थ का जन्मदिन विशेष उत्साह एवं परम्परा के साथ मनाया जाता है। इस दौरान मंदिर को हजारों मोमबत्तियों से सजाया जाता है तथा जलती हुई मोमबत्तियों से उत्पन्न दृश्य मनुष्य के मानस पटल पर अंकित हो जाता है।
