Chhath Puja: नहाय खाय के साथ सूर्य उपासना का महापर्व छठ पूजा की शुरूआत हो चुकी है। चार दिनों के इस पर्व के लिए महीनों पहले से तैयारियां शुरू हो जाती हैं। इस पर्व को लेकर उत्साह इतना होता है कि व्रती को इसकी कठिनाईयों का अहसास तक नहीं होता। इस पर्व में आस्था की मजबूती और इसकी ऊर्जा से पूरा का पूरा माहौल ही श्रद्धा भाव से सराबोर रहता है। वैसे तो छठ पूजा को पूर्वांचल के लोगों द्वारा मनाया जाता रहा है। लेकिन आज के समय में इसके बढ़ते सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक सरोकार ने इसे इस चौहद्दी से बहुत पार कर दिया है।
छठ पूजा की शुरूआत नहाय-खाय के साथ ही हो जाता है। लोक आस्था का पर्व या यूँ कहें प्रकृति पर्व, सूर्योपासना के पर्व की अपनी अलग महत्ता है। छठ पूजा के व्रत में लगभग 36 घंटे के करीब निर्जला उपवास रखा जाता है। नहाय खाय के दिन व्रती स्नान आदि के बाद पूजन विधि को सम्पन्न करने के बाद कच्चे चावल और चने की दाल तथा सब्जी में लॉकी (कद्दू) की सब्जी को बनाने की परंपरा है। इसे आम भाषा में नहाय-खाय का दिन कहा जाता है। पूजा में तैयार किये जाने वाले पकवान या प्रसाद के लिए सभी कच्चे सामग्री को इस दिन ही साफ करके रखने की परंपरा है। इस दिन ही प्रसाद के रूप में बनाये जाने वाले ठकुऐ के लिए गेहूं को बहुत ही पवित्रता के साथ साफ करके सूखाया जाता है ताकि उससे आटा बनाया जा सकें। दूसरे दिन खरना होता है। इसी दिन से व्रती बिना कुछ खाये पीये निर्जला उपवास करती है। बस रात्री को पूजन के दौरान जितना निवाला वो ले पाती है बस उतना ही उनके लिए उस दिन का प्रसाद होता है। बांकी फिर से निर्जला उपवास तब तक जब तक कि अगले के अगले दिन यानी कि उगते हुए सूर्य को अर्घ्य दे कर पूजन की और विधि को सम्पन्न ना कर लिया जाए।
छठ पूजा में खरना वाले दिन के अगले दिन संध्या में डूबते हुए सर्य को अर्घ्य दिया जाता है। फिर अगली सुबह उगते हुए सूर्य को। मुख्य रूप से यह पर्व सूर्य की उपासना से जुड़ा है। यह व्रत संतान की सुखद भविष्य तथा परिवार की खुशहाली के लिए जाता है। मान्यता है कि छठ व्रत करने से निसंतान को संतान की प्राप्ति होती है और सारी मनोकामनाएं पूरी हो जाती है। सूर्य उपासना का यह पर्व छठी माई के नाम पर किया जाता है। इसके पीछे भी बहुत सारी मान्यताएं हैं। कहते हैं छठी माई सूर्य देव की बहन है। इसलिए इस पूजा में उगते और डूबते हुए सूर्य की पूजा का विधान है। छठ मैया को षष्ठी देवी कहा गया है। षष्ठी देवी को शास्त्रों में ब्रह्मा की मानसपुत्री भी कहा गया है, जो निसंतानों को संतान प्रदान करती हैं। आस्था है कि जो छठ पर्व पर भगवान सूर्य और छठी मैया की पूजा-अर्चना करते हैं, उन्हें संतान की प्राप्ति होती है और उनके संतान दीर्घायु होते हैं।
छठ से जुड़ी एक और मान्यता है कि जब भगवान राम लंकापति रावण का वध कर अयोध्या लौटे थे, तब रामराज्य की स्थापना के दिन कार्तिक शुक्ल षष्ठी को भगवान राम और माता सीता ने उपवास रख कर सूर्यदेव की पूजा-अर्चना की थी। हालांकि इस से जुड़ी एक कहानी महाभारत काल की भी है। मान्यता के अनुसार सूर्य पुत्र कर्ण ने सूर्यदेव की पूजा की शुरूआत की थी। वह प्रतिदिन घंटों कमर भर पानी में खड़े होकर सूर्यदेव को अर्घ्य देते थे और पूजा करते थे जिससे की वह एक महान योद्धा बन गए।
