साहित्य में चौपाई का क्या है मतलब ?

चौपाई मात्रिक सम छन्द का एक भेद है। प्राकृत तथा अपभ्रंश के 16 मात्रा के वर्णनात्मक छन्दों के आधार पर विकसित हिन्दी का सर्वप्रिय और अपना छन्द है। गोस्वामी तुलसीदास ने रामचरितमानस में चौपाई छन्द का बहुत अच्छा निर्वाह किया है। चौपाई में चार चरण होते हैं, प्रत्येक चरण में 16-16 मात्राएँ होती हैं तथा अन्त में गुरु होता है। ‘प्राकृतपैंकलम्’ का चउपइया 15 मात्राओं का भिन्न छन्द है। इसका विकास पादाकुलक के चौकलों के नियम के शिथिल होने से सम्भव जान पड़ता है। भानु ने चौपाई के 16 मात्रा के चरणों में न तो चौकलों का कोई क्रम माना है और न ही लघु-गुरु का। उन्होंने सम के पीछे सम और विषम के पीछे विषम कल के प्रयोग को अच्छा माना है तथा अन्त में जगण (।ऽ।) और तगण (ऽऽ।) को वर्जित माना है।
सम-सम का प्रयोग-
“गुरु-पद-रज-मृदु-मं-जुल-अं-जन”।
विषम-विषम, सम-सम का प्रयोग-
“नित्य-भजिय-तजि-मन-कुटि-ला-ई”।
विषम-विषम सम, विषम-विषम सम का प्रयोग-
“कहहु-राम-की-कथा-सुहा-ई।”
दो विषम सम के समान प्रयुक्त-
“बंदौं-राम-नाम-रघु-बरको।”
तुलसी ने इन नियमों का ‘रामचरितमानस’ में बहुत अच्छा निर्वाह किया है और उनके छन्द प्रवाह का सौन्दर्य भी यही है। चन्द, जायसी, सुन्दर, सूर, नन्ददास तथा जोधराज आदि ने इन नियमों में शिथिलता दिखलाई है। कभी-कभी 15 मात्रा के चरणों का प्रयोग मिलता है और कभी लघुगुरु (।ऽ) से अन्त किया गया है। यद्यपि 15 मात्रा का ‘चौपई छन्द’ अलग है, परन्तु उसके अन्त में ग ल (ऽ।) आवश्यक है। चरण के अन्त में ल ग (।ऽ) का प्रयोग इस छन्द में स्वतंत्रता से मिलता है। जायसी में ऐसे अनेक छन्द हैं तथा नन्ददास ने अपनी तीनों मंजरियों में ऐसे बहुत प्रयोग किये हैं- “चले-चले तुम जैयो तहाँ। बैठे हों साँवरे जहाँ।”। इनको चौपाई ही माना जायेगा, यद्यपि 15 मात्रा के चरण हैं। सुन्दर में 15 मात्रा के ल ग (।ऽ) तथा ग ग (ऽऽ) दोनों प्रकार के अन्त पाये जाते हैं, जो चौपई के ग ल (ऽ।) से भिन्न हैं- “ये चौपाई त्रयोदस कही। आतम साक्षी जानौ सही।” वस्तुत: अनेक कवियों में चौपाई तथा चौपई छन्द के प्रयोग में भ्रम की स्थिति पायी जाती है।
हिन्दी में यह छन्द चन्द्र के काव्य से ही मिलता है। यह सामान्यत: वर्णनात्मक है, जिसमें किसी भी प्रकार की स्थिति आ जाती है। सभी रसों का निर्वाह इसमें हो जाता है। कथा-काव्यों में इस छन्द की लोकप्रियता का मुख्य कारण यही है। वीरकाव्य के कवियों में केशव, जटमल, गोरेलाल, सूदन, गुलाब तथा जोधराज आदि ने चौपाई का प्रयोग प्रसंगानुकूल किया है, पर प्रेमाख्यानक कवियों में कुतुबन, जायसी, उसमान, नूरमुहम्मद आदि सभी ने इस छन्द को दोहा के साथ अपनाया है। सूर ने ‘सूरसागर’ के कथात्मक अंशों को जोड़ने के लिए इस छन्द का आश्रय लिया है। नन्ददास ने मंजरियों में प्रयोग किया है। कथा-काव्य के लिए इस छन्द की उपयुक्तता के कारण कृष्ण-कथा भी इस शैली में कई कवियों ने लिखी है। आधुनिक काल में द्वारकाप्रसाद मिश्र ने ‘कृष्णायन’ में इसका प्रयोग किया है। लाल कवि का ‘छत्र-प्रकाश’ इसी शैली में है। सन्त कवियों में सुन्दरदास ने भी ग्रन्थों की रचना दोहा-चौपाई-शैली में की है।
