लौंग बेशक आकार में छोटा है, लेकिन इसके कई चमत्कारी फायदे हैं. आपको जानकर हैरानी होगी कि लौंग सर्दी-खांसी से लेकर मधुमेह और अस्थमा जैसी गंभीर बीमारियों के इलाज में भी काम आता है. लौंग को दादी नानी के नुस्को में एक विशेष स्थान प्राप्त है. इसका उपयोग भारत और चीन में 2000 वर्षों से भी अधिक समय से हो रहा है. लौंग का उत्पादन मुख्य रूप से इंडोनेशिया, मेडागास्कर, भारत, पाकिस्तान, श्रीलंका आदि देशों में होता है.
सामान्यतः इसका इस्तेमाल भोजन बनाने और धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों में किया जाता है, लेकिन लौंग का प्रयोग प्राचीन समय से एक आयुर्वेदिक जड़ी-बूटी के रूप में भी किया जा रहा है. इसमें कई जरूरी औषधीय तत्व मौजूद होते हैं, जो शरीर से जुड़ी परेशानियों को दूर करने में मदद करते हैं.
अलग-अलग स्थानों एवं भाषाओं में लौंग को भिन्न-भिन्न नामों से जाना जाता है. लौंग को अंग्रेजी में क्लोव (clove) कहा जाता है जो कि लैटिन के शब्द क्लावस (clavus), जिसका अर्थ नाखून होता है, का अंग्रेजी रूपान्तर है. लौंग के नाखून के सदृश होने के कारण ही उसका यह अंग्रेजी नाम पड़ा. लौंग का उद्गम स्थान इंडोनेशिया को माना जाता है. ऐतिहासिक रूप से लौंग का पेड़ मोलुक्का द्वीपों का देशी वृक्ष है, जहाँ चीन ने ईसा से लगभग तीन शताब्दी पूर्व इसे खोजा और अलेक्सैन्ड्रिया में इसका आयात तक होने लगा. आज जंजीबार लौंग का सबसे अधिक उत्पादन करने वाला देश है. लौंग का अधिक मात्रा में उत्पादन जंजीबार और मलाक्का द्वीप में होता है.
लौंग में मौजूद तत्वों का विश्लेषण किया जाए तो इसमें कार्बोहाइड्रेट, नमी, प्रोटीन, वाष्पशील तेल, गैर-वाष्पशील ईथर निचोड़ (वसा) और रेशों से बना होता है. इसके अलावा खनिज पदार्थ, हाइड्रोक्लोरिक एसिड में न घुलने वाली राख, कैल्शियम, फास्फोरस, लोहा, सोडियम, पोटेशियम, थायामाइन, राइबोफ्लेविन, नियासिन, विटामिन ‘सी’ और ‘ए’ जैसे तत्व भी लौंग में प्रचुर मात्रा में पाए जाते हैं. इसके अलावा कई तरह के औषधीय तत्व होते हैं. इसका ऊष्मीय मान 43 डिग्री है और इससे कई तरह के औषधीय व भौतिक तत्व लिए जा सकते हैं.
लौंग, सदाबहार पेड़ की खूशबूदार सूखी पुष्प कलियां होती हैं. लौंग मध्यम आकार का सदाबहार वृक्ष से पाया जाने वाला, सूखा, अनखुला एक ऐसा पुष्प अंकुर होता है जिसके वृक्ष का तना सीधा और पेड़ भी 10-12 मीटर की ऊँचाई वाला होता है और जिसके पत्ते बड़े-बड़े तथा दीर्घवृताकार होते हैं. इसके पेड़ को लगाने के आठ या नौ वर्ष के बाद ही फल देते है. लौंग के पेड़ों के शाखों के अन्तिम छोरों में लौंग के फूल समूह में खिलते हैं. लौंग की कलियों का रंग खिलना आरम्भ होते समय पीला होता है जो कि धीरे-धीरे हरा होते जाता है और पूर्णतः खिल जाने पर इसका रंग लाल हो जाता है. इन कलियों में चार पँखुड़ियों के मध्य एक वृताकार फल होता है.
सर्दी और खांसी जैसी आम समस्या के निवारण के लिए भी लौंग एक कारगर घरेलू नुस्खा है. लौंग में एंटीबैक्टीरियल, एंटीइंफ्लेमेंटरी, एंटीफंगल, एंटीऑक्सीडेंट और एंटीसेप्टिक गुण पाए जाते हैं, जो सर्दी और जुकाम से निजात दिलाने का काम करते हैं. दांतों में होने वाले दर्द को कम करने के लिए लौंग काफी फायदेमंद माना जाता है. लौंग में यूजेनिया नामक तत्व दांतों के दर्द को कम करने का काम करता है.
लौंग का इस्तेमाल शरीर से जुड़ी गंभीर बीमारियों के लिए भी किया जाता है, जिसमें मधुमेह भी शामिल है. मधुमेह वो चिकित्सकीय स्थिति है, जिसके अंतर्गत रक्त में शर्करा की मात्रा अधिक हो जाती है. मधुमेह को नियंत्रित करने के लिए आप लौंग का सेवन कर सकते हैं. लौंग में विटामिन-के और जरूरी मिनरल्स (जिंक, कॉपर, मैग्नीशियम ) पाए जाते हैं|
