सभी ने राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ (आरएसएस) के बारे में सुना है। कई लोगों के लिए यह देश की सत्तारूढ़ भारतीय जनता पार्टी की प्रेरणा है लेकिन देश के बहुत कम लोग डॉ. केशव बलिराम हेडगेवार के नाम से परिचित हैं जिन्होंने 94 वर्ष पहले आरएसएस की स्थापना की थी। इसकी स्थापना के बाद से हेडगेवार को कभी पता नहीं चला कि आराम क्या होता है। कई वर्षों तक संघ बगैर कार्यालय और पदाधिकारियों के कार्य करता रहा था। 1925 में विजयदशमी के अवसर पर समान विचारधारा के कुछ युवाओं की बैठक के साथ संघ की शुरूआत हुई थी जिन्होंने मातृभूमि की आराधना करने और भारत की सुरक्षा तथा मान के लिए अपना जीवन न्यौछावर करने की प्रतिज्ञा ली थी। वर्षों तक शुभचिंतकों और समर्थकों के घर संगठन के कार्यालय बने रहे। संघ ने कभी भी अपने लिए कोष एकत्रित नहीं किया। यह सही मायने में समर्थकों का स्वैच्छिक कार्य था। डॉ० हेडगेवार के दर्शन का मूल बलिदान था। डॉ० हेडगेवार ने लोगों के साथ जुड़ने और संबंध कायम करने की एक नायाब, अनोखी और सजीव कार्यप्रणाली तैयार की थी। वे राष्ट्र हित में निजी लाभ और आराम को भूलने में लाखों लोगों के लिए कुशल रणनीतिकार, सैद्धांतिक और प्रेरक साबित हुए। यह उनके सफल अभियान का रहस्य था।
डॉ० हेडगेवार जैसे कुछ ही व्यक्ति हैं जो देश के इतिहास और उसके राजनीतिक भाग्य पर गहरी छाप छोड़ते हैं। उन्होंने एक ऐसे संगठन की स्थापना की जो यकीनन दुनिया में सबसे बड़ा और सबसे स्थायी तथा वैचारिक रूप से काफी उन्नत है, जिसे समाज के बड़े वर्ग ने अपनाया है लेकिन आम जनता इससे अनजान रही। डॉ० हेडगेवार ऐसे व्यक्तित्व थे जो स्वयं को सबके सामने रखने की बजाय अपने कार्यों के जरिये अपनी बात रखते थे। वे आरएसएस के नाम से प्रसिद्ध राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के संस्थापक थे और 1940 में उनके निधन तक उन्होंने पहले सरसंघचालक (प्रमुख) के रूप में इस संगठन का 15 वर्षों तक नेतृत्व किया। उन्होंने श्री गुरूजी एम एस गोलवलकर को अपना उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त किया जिन्होंने अगले तीन दशकों तक आरएसएस को देश के कोने-कोने तक फैलाया।
डॉ० हेडगेवार ने सक्रिय जीवन बिताया। वे बचपन से ही शानदार, जोशीले देशभक्त थे जिन्होंने ब्रिटिश साम्राज्यवाद की खुली निंदा की। डॉ. केशव राव बलीराम हेडगेवार का जन्म नागपुर के एक गरीब ब्राह्मण परिवार में 1 अप्रैल 1889 को हुआ था। डॉ. हेडगेवार छोटे से ही क्रांतिकारी प्रवृति के थे और उन्हें अंग्रेजों से बहुत घृणा थी। केशव राव बलीराम हेडगेवार के पिता का नाम पं. बलीराम पंत हेडगेवार था और माता का नाम रेवतीबाई था। उनका का बचपन बड़े लाड़-प्यार से बीता। उनके दो बड़े भाई भी थे, जिनका नाम महादेव और सीताराम था।
डॉ. हेडगेवार अपने बड़े भाइयों से बहुत ज्यादा प्रेरित होते थे। इनके बड़े सबसे बड़े भाई महादेव भी शास्त्रों के अच्छे ज्ञाता तो थे साथ ही मल्ल-युद्ध की कला में भी बहुत माहिर थे। वे रोज अखाड़े में जाकर स्वयं तो व्यायाम करते ही थे, गली-मुहल्ले के बच्चों को एकत्र करके उन्हें भी कुश्ती के दाँव-पेंच सिखलाते थे। केशव राव बलीराम के मानस-पटल पर बड़े भाई महादेव के विचारों का गहरा प्रभाव रहा किन्तु वे बड़े भाई की अपेक्षा बाल्यकाल से ही क्रान्तिकारी विचारों के थे। जिसका परिणाम यह हुआ कि वे डॉक्टरी पढ़ने के लिये कलकत्ता गये और वहाँ से उन्होंने कलकत्ता मेडिकल कॉलेज से प्रथम श्रेणी में डॉक्टरी की परीक्षा भी उत्तीर्ण की।
1910 में जब डॉक्टरी की पढाई के लिए कोलकाता गये तो उस समय वहां देश की नामी क्रांतिकारी संस्था अनुशीलन समिति से जुड़ गये। 1915 में नागपुर लौटने पर डा. हेडगेवार कांग्रेस में सक्रिय हो गये और कुछ समय में विदर्भ प्रांतीय कांग्रेस के सचिव बन गये। 1920 में जब नागपुर में कांग्रेस का देश स्तरीय अधिवेशन हुआ तो उन्होंने कांग्रेस में पहली बार पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता को लक्ष्य बनाने के बारे में प्रस्ताव प्रस्तुत किया जो पारित नहीं हो सका। 1921 में कांग्रेस के असहयोग आन्दोलन में सत्याग्रह कर गिरफ्तारी दी और उन्हें एक वर्ष की जेल हुयी। डा. हेडगेवार तब तक काफी लोकप्रिय हो चुके थे। हेडगेवार की रिहाई पर स्वागत के लिए आयोजित सभा को मोतीलाल नेहरू और हकीम अजकल खां जैसे दिग्गज लोगों ने संबोाधित किया था।
सन 1916 में डा. हेडगेवार कांग्रेस के अधिवेशन में शामिल होने के लिए लखनऊ गये। वे लखनऊ की युवा टोली के सम्पर्क में आये। बाद में डॉ. हेडगेवार का कांग्रेस से मोह भंग हुआ और नागपुर में संघ की स्थापना कर दी। दुनिया में हजारों संगठन रोज बनते हैं। कुछ दस साल जीवित रहते हैं, तो कुछ बीस साल। कुछ संस्थाएं इससे आगे भी चल जाती हैं, पर फिर वे कुर्सी और सम्पत्ति के विवाद में अपने उद्देश्य से भटक जाती हैं। कई बार तो वे घरेलू जागीर बनकर रह जाती हैं। पर डॉ. केशव बलीराम हेडगेवार ने 1925 में राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ नामक जिस संगठन की नींव रखीं थी, वह एक ओर भारत के हर विकास खंड तक पहुंच चुका है, तो दूसरी तरफ दुनिया के जिन देशों में हिंदू आबादी है वहां भी विद्यमान है। हर आयु वर्ग और काम करने वालों में स्वयंसेवक विभिन्न संगठन और संस्थाएं बनाकर काम कर रहे हैं। सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता हों या राजनीतिक जीव, सच्चाई तो यह है संघ का प्रभाव हर इंसान में है। तभी आज दुनिया के हर कोने में संघ से जुड़े व्यक्ति मिल जाएंगे जो इसकी तारीफों के पुल बांधते रहते हैं तो विरोधी भी दिन में एक बार संघ को गाली दिये बिना अपना खाना हजम नहीं करा पाते।
डॉ केशव राव बलीराम हेडगेवार 1925 से 1940 तक, यानि मृत्यु पर्यन्त तक राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के सरसंघचालक रहे। 21 जून 1940 को डा. हेडगेवार को नागपुर में निधन हुआ। इनकी समाधि रेशम बाग नागपुर में स्थित है, जहाँ इनका अंत्येष्टि संस्कार हुआ था। संघ आज जिस स्थिति में है उसके लिए डॉ. हेडगेवार ने अपना तन, मन और धन ही नहीं, बल्कि जीवन का क्षण-क्षण देकर जो कीमत चुकाई है उससे समाज के यह मूल्य स्थापित हुआ कि संगठनकर्ता हो तो डॉ. हेडगेवार जैसा हो।
