भारतीय परमाणु क्षमता के जनक डॉ होमी जहांगीर भाभा
कितना पढ़ोगे? भाभा बनोगे क्या? अक्सर दोस्त पढ़ते देखकर ये बोलते हैं. भारत में पैदा हुए हैं तो बड़े लोगों और वैज्ञानिकों से तुलना तो जरुर होगी. भाभा वो परमाणु वैज्ञानिक थे जिन्होंने भारत को परमाणु का तोहफा दिया. पूरा भारत हर्षो-उल्लास से झूम उठा जब 1974 में भारत ने पहली बार परमाणु निरिक्षण किया और उसमे सफल रहा.
पोखरण में हुए स्माइलिंग बुद्धा नाम से पहले परमाणु परीक्षण की नीव रखने वाले परमाणु वैज्ञानिक होमी जहांगीर भाभा थे. भाभा का जन्म 30 अक्टूबर 1909 को हुआ. एक अच्छे समृद्ध परिवार से होने के कारण इन्हें पढने के लिए हर सुख सुविधा मिली. इनके चाचा दोरबाजी टाटा ने इनके पिता के साथ मिलकर इनके पढाई का फैसला लिया और इन्हें पढने के लिए कैंब्रिज यूनिवर्सिटी भेज दिया. इन दोनों ने ये सोचा की जब भाभा अपनी मैकेनिकल इंजीनियरिंग की पढाई कैंब्रिज यूनिवर्सिटी से पूरी करके भारत लौट आएंगे तो इन्हें जमशेदपुर का टाटा स्टील और टाटा स्टील मिल्स सौप दिया जाएगा.
होमी जे. भाभा के पहले वैज्ञानिक पेपर ‘द एबसोर्पसन ऑफ़ क्प्स्मिक रेडिएशन’ छपने के बाद इन्हें परमाणु फिजिक्स यानि न्यूक्लियर फिजिक्स में डॉक्टरेट मिल गई. इस शोध के कारण इनको ‘इस्सैक न्यूटन स्टूडेंटशिप’ मिली. पढाई के दौरान भाभा ने अपने समय को बाँट रखा था, एक ओर ये कैंब्रिज में काम कर रहे थे तो वही दूसरी ओर कोपेनहेगन में नील्स बोर के साथ भी काम कर रहे थे. 1935 में इन्होनें अपना दूसरे पेपर में इलेक्ट्रॉन और प्रोटॉन प्रकीर्णन के बारे में बताया. 1936 में वाल्टर हेइत्लेर के साथ मिलकर ‘तेज इलेक्ट्रॉन के पारित होने और ब्रह्मांडीय वर्षा के सिद्धांत’ के बारे बताया. 1939 में भारत आने के बाद इन्होने भारत में रहने का फैसला किया. बैंगलोर के भारतीय विज्ञान संस्थान के भौतिकी विभाग यानि फिजिक्स डिपार्टमेंट जिसकी अध्यक्षता नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता सी.वी. रमन कर रहे थे उसमे पाठक के पद को सेवा स्वीकार कर लिया. अपने कार्य की ओर अग्रसर भाभा, रॉयल सोसाइटी के फेलो चुने गुए.
अपने चाचा दोराब टाटा ट्रस्ट की तरफ से इनको विशेष शोध के लिए स्वीकृति मिल गई साथ ही महारास्ट्र सरकार ने इनके संस्थान को बनाने में अपनी रूचि दिखाई, जिसके बाद इन्होने मुंबई में ‘टाटा इंस्टिट्यूट ऑफ़ फंडामेंटल रिसर्च’ की स्थापना की. भाभा ती.आई.एफ.आर. के निर्देशक और प्रोफ़ेसर रहे. भाभा एटॉमिक एनर्जी इस्टैब्लिशमेंट, त्रोम्बय यानि ए.इ.इ.टी के स्थापक निर्देशकों में से एक थे. भाभा अपने सपने को लेकर इतने जुनूनी थे की उन्होंने भारत को परमाणु शक्ति वाला देश बनाने में कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी.
पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरु को 1944 में भाभा ने परमणु कार्यक्रम चालू करने के लिए माना लिया. भारत की आज़ादी के बाद भाभा ने हर भारतीय मूल वैज्ञानिक से अनुरोध किया की वो अपने देश वापस आए. उनके इस बात का असर काफी वैज्ञानिकों पर पड़ा और वो भारत लौट आए. उन वैज्ञानिकों में से एक थे होमी नौशेरवांजी सेठना, जिन्होंने भाभा के ना रहने के बावजूद भारत के परमाणु कार्य को रुकने नहीं दिया. 1948 में उस वक़्त के प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरु ने भाभा को परमाणु कार्यक्रम का निर्देशक बना दिया और साथ ही इन्हें परमाणु हथियार बनाने का कार्य सौंपा.
होमी जहांगीर भाभा की अचानक मृत्यु से पूरे देश को सदमा पहुंचा था. 24 जनवरी, 1966 को ऑस्ट्रिया के वियना में अंतरराष्ट्रीय परमाणु ऊर्जा पर होनेवाले एक सम्मलेन में शामिल होने जा रहे थे. जिस प्लेन में ये स्वर थे उस प्लेन में एक तेज़ विस्फोट हुआ जिसके कारण उसमे सवार 117 लोगों की मौत हो गई, जिसमे से एक भाभा भी थे.
इनकी मृत्यु पर कई मिथ्य सामने आते हैं. कहाँ जाता है की ये विस्फोट अमेरिका के ख़ुफ़िया एजेंसी सी.आई.ए ने करवाई थी. भाभा ने अपने जीवनकाल में बहुत सारी उपलब्धियां हासिल की थी. 1942 में इन्हें एडम्स पुरष्कार से नवाज़ा गया था, तो 1954 में इन्हें भारत सरकार की तरफ से पद्म भूषण पुरष्कार से सम्मानित किया गया. भाभा को कभी नोबेल पुरष्कार तो नहीं मिला लेकिन इन्हें पांच बार नोबेल पुरष्कार के लिए नोमिनेट किया गया जो खुद में ही बड़ी उपलब्धि है. इनको सम्मानित करने के लिए भारत की पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गाँधी ने ए.इ.इ.टी का नाम बदलकर ‘भाभा एटॉमिक रिसर्च सेन्टर’रख दिया .
आपको लग रहा होगा भाभा सिर्फ परमाणु में ही रूचि रखते होंगे पर ऐसा नहीं है. भाभा शास्त्रीय संगीत, चित्रकला, ओपेरा सरगम में भी निपूण थे. भाभा की उपलब्धियां उन्हें महान बनती हैं. जब-जब भारत में परमाणु के विषय में बात होगी तब-तब उसके जन्मदाता होमी जहांगीर भाभा का नाम बड़े आदर के साथ लिया जायेगा. इनके कुशल निर्देशन में अप्सरा, सिरस और जरलिना नामक रिएक्टरो की स्थापना हुई.
