भारत में मस्जिदों का अपने आप में एक अलग महत्व है. मोटेतौर पर कह सकते हैं कि भारत में मस्जिदों के बनने की शुरुआत मुगलों के आगमन के बाद हुई थी. हालांकि कुछ मस्जिदों के निर्माण के प्रमाण इसे पहले के भी है. यदि आपसे यह पूछा जाए कि भारत में सबसे पहली मस्जिद कहां है ? कब बनी ? तो क्या कहेंगे ? नहीं पता है. कोई बात नहीं. आइए, हम बता देते हैं. भारत में बनी पहली मस्जिद केरल के त्रिशूर में है और इसे चेरामन मस्जिद के नाम से जाना जाता है.
बताया जाता है कि ये दुनिया की दूसरी सबसे पुरानी मस्जिद भी है. मस्जिद पैगंबर मोहम्मद साहब के समय बनी थी. केरल के त्रिशुर जिले में स्थित इस मस्जिद का निर्माण 629 ईस्वी में हुआ था. चेरामन मस्जिद का निर्माण मलिक बिन दीनार ने कराया था. मलिक दीनार कोडुंगालुर के शासक चेरामन पेरुमल का समकालीन था. चेरामन पेरुमल ने मक्का की यात्रा की और इस्लाम धर्म स्वीकार कर लिया था. पेरुमल ने ही मक्का के लोगों को भारत में इस्लाम का प्रचार करने के लिए आमंत्रित किया था. कहा जाता है कि उनके न्योते पर ही मलिक बिन दीनार और मलिक बिन हबीब भारत आए और इस मस्जिद का निर्माण कराया.
इतिहासकारों के अनुसार, कोडुंगालुर के राजा चेरामन पेरुमल एक बार मक्का यात्रा पर गए थे, जहां उनकी मुलाकात पैगम्बर से हुई. इसके बाद चेरामन ने इस्लाम कबूल लिया. उन्होंने अपना नाम बदलकर थाजुद्दीन रखा और एक मुस्लिम लड़की से शादी भी की थी. इस दौरान राजा चेरामन ने मक्का के कारोबारियों को इस्लाम के प्रचार के लिए केरल आने का न्योता दिया था. चेरामन के वंशज आज भी हिंदू धर्म को मानते हैं.
बताया जाता है कि इस मस्जिद में मुस्लिम ही नहीं, बल्कि हिंदू धर्म के लोग भी जाते हैं. इस मस्जिद में एक दिया है, जिसमें सभी धर्मों के लोग तेल डालते हैं. इस मस्जिद का आकार और निर्माण हिंदुओं ने हिंदू कला और वास्तुशिल्प के आधार पर किया था. मस्जिद के साथ तीन महान इस्लाम धर्म अनुयायियों की कब्रें हैं. भारत की पहली और विश्व की दूसरी ऐसी जगह है, जहां जुमा नमाज शुरु हुई थी. चेरामन जुमा मस्जिद की स्वर्ण अलंकृत प्रतिकृति उपहार स्वरुप भेंट किया.
