Shankracharya: शंकाराचार्य का शाब्दिक अर्थ होता है शंकर के मार्ग के शिक्षक। यह एक धार्मिक उपाधि है। हिंदू धर्म में सर्वोच्च धर्मगुरू शंकराचार्य ही माने जाते हैं। वैसे तो इन सब से पहले हमें यह जान लेना चाहिए कि आखिर ये शंकराचार्य थे कौन, जिनके नाम से यह उपाधि दी जाती है।
आदिगुरु शंकराचार्य कौन थे ?
केरल के कलाड़ी में शिवगुरू के घर एक बालक ने जन्म लिया। नामकरण संस्कार में उसे पहचान मिली शंकर के नाम से। शंकर बचपन से ही बहुत ज्यादा प्रतिभावान था। कहते हैं कि मात्र 3-4 साल की आयु में ही शंकर ने मलयालम भाषा सीख ली थी। पिता के असमय मृत्यु के कारण, शंकर का पालन-पोषण उसकी मां ने ही किया। 5 साल की उम्र में उपनयन संस्कार के बाद वह गुरूकुल चले गए। वहां पर बालक शंकर विधा सीखने लगें। पर जिस शिक्षा को पाने में लोगों को 20 वर्ष लग जाया करते थे, उसे बालक शंकर ने केवल 2 साल में ही पूरा कर लिया।
गुरूकुल से शिक्षा प्राप्त कर शंकर वापस अपने मां के पास आ गए। कहते हैं शंकर की मां को पानी भरने के लिए काफी दूर जान पड़ता था। तब शंकर ने भगवान से प्रार्थना कि और पूर्णा नदी उनके गांव के पास से बहने लगी। मां के साथ दिन अच्छे कट रहे थे। तभी उनके घर एक ऋषि का आगमन हुआ और उन्होंने शंकर के आयु के बारे में एक भविष्यवाणी की। उन्होंने कहा था कि शंकर की आयु मात्र 32 वर्ष ही है। यह सुन मां का मन काफी व्याकुल हो उठा।
इधर शंकर का मन भी संसार से हट रहा था। लेकिन मां का कोमल और भयभीत मन उसे अपने से दूर जाने देने को तैयार कहां था। लेकिन मां को किसी तरह मना कर शंकर सन्यास की राह पर चल दिए। यात्रा के क्रम में शंकर कलाड़ी से श्रृंगेरी और फिर वहां से ओंकारेश्वर की ओर चले गए। ओंकारेश्वर में ऋषि गुरु गोविंदपाद जी का आश्रम था। गोविन्दपाद जी ने शंकर को अपना शिष्य स्वीकारा और उन्हें आगे की शिक्षा दी। शंकर को शंकराचार्य का नाम इन्हीं के द्वारा दिया गया था।
12 साल की आयु तक शंकाराचार्य ने सभी शास्त्रों पर महारत हासिल कर ली थी। यात्रा के इसी क्रम में उनका प्रवास बनारस में हुआ। जहां उनसे प्रभावित होकर कई लोग इनके शिष्य बन गए। यहीं शंकराचार्य को ब्रह्म के असली स्वरूप का ज्ञान हुआ, वो भी एक चांडाल से। कहानी कुछ यूं है- एक बार शंकराचार्य अपने शिष्यों के साथ भ्रमण पर थे। तो दूर से चांडाल को आता देख उनके शिष्यों ने चांडाल को चिल्लाकर दूर ही रूक जाने को कहा ताकि उसकी छाया मात्र से शंकराचार्य कहीं अपवित्र ना हो जाएं। ऐसा करने पर चांडाल ने कहा- जब ब्रह्म तत्व हर एक जीव में है तो आप अलग और मैं अलग कैसे ? आप जिस भूमि पर खड़े हैं, उसी भूमि पर मैं भी खड़ा हूं और भूमि का हर एक कण आपस में जुड़ा है फिर आपका और मेरा स्पर्श अलग कैसे हुआ। यह कहते ही शंकराचार्य को ब्रह्मसत्ता का भान हो गया।
कौन हैं आज के शंकराचार्य-
कहते हैं शंकराचार्य ने अपने भ्रमण काल में देश के चार कोनों में चार मठों की स्थापना की। ये चार मठ है- ओडिशा के पुरी में गोवर्धन मठ, यहां के सन्यासियों के नाम के बाद आरण्य सम्प्रदाय लगाया जाता है। इसके शंकराचार्य हैं निश्चलानंद सरस्वती जी। दूसरा है- गुजरात के द्वारकाधाम में स्थित शारदा मठ, इसके शंकराचार्य है सदानंद सरस्वती। तीसरा है- उत्तराखंड के बद्रिकाश्रम में ज्योर्तिमठ। इनके नाम के बाद सागर शब्द लगता है। इसके वर्त्तमान शंकराचार्य हैं स्वामी अविमुक्तेशवरानंद। और चौथा है- दक्षिण भारत का श्रृंगेरी मठ। इनके शंकराचार्य है जगदगुरू भारती तीर्थ जी।
शंकराचार्य को हिन्दू धर्म में सर्वोच्च पद प्राप्त है। ये सबसे बड़े धर्माचार्य माने जाते हैं। आदि गुरु शंकराचार्य ने चार मठों पर पीठाधीश्वर नियुक्त कर केदारनाथ चले गए थे। जहां 32 वर्ष की आयु में उन्होंने समाधि ले ली। उनकी मृत्यु के बाद उनके द्वारा बनाए गए मठों में आज भी शंकराचार्य की परंपरा चलती आ रही है।
आज कैसे बनते हैं शंकराचार्य-
इस पद पर बैठने के लिए सन्यासी होना जरूरी है। इन्हें गृहस्थ का त्याग कर पूरे परंपरा के साथ मंडन, स्वयं का पिंडदान करना होता है। तन, मन से पवित्र होकर तथा चारों वेदों के साथ छह वेदांगों का ज्ञान भी होना आवश्यक है। इसके बाद महामंडलेश्वरों, प्रतिष्ठित संतो की सभा की सहमति और काशी परिषद की मुहर भी आवश्यक है। तब जाकर शंकराचार्य के पद पर आसीन हो सकते हैं। हिन्दू धर्म में किसी शंका या विवाद की स्थिति में शंकाराचार्य ही अंतिम आथिरिटी माने जाते हैं।
