गंगा वह नहीं हैं जो धरती पर बह रहीं हैं. गंगा को माँ का दर्जा प्राप्त है, वह माँ जो हर एक में समाई हैं। माँ की मौजूदगी हर एक में हैं । जरा ऐहसास-ऐ-माँ करके देखो । माँ की अगाध अनुकम्पा से अपरम्पार महिमा मिलेगी सबको। गंगा भी एक माँ की तरह सबको अपना प्यार देती है.
क्या आप जानते हैं कि गंगा, भारत और बांग्लादेश में मिलकर 2,510 किलोमीटर की दूरी तय करती है. अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर गंगा नदी का नाम ‘द गैंगिज़’ है. यह शताब्दियों से हिन्दुओं की पवित्र तथा पूजनीय नदी रही है. यह विश्व के सबसे उपजाऊ और घनी आबादी वाले क्षेत्रों से होकर बहती है. उत्तरांचल में हिमालय से निकलकर बंगाल की खाड़ी में भारत के लगभग एक-चौथाई भू-क्षेत्र को प्रवाहित होती है। गंगा नदी को उत्तर भारत की अर्थव्यवस्था का मेरुदण्ड भी कहा गया है।
यह हिमालय के गंगोत्री ग्लेशियर में भागीरथि नदी के नाम से बर्फ के पहाड़ों के बीच जन्म लेती है। इसमें आगे चलकर अन्य नदियां जुड़ती हैं, जैसे कि अलकनंदा, यमुना, सोन, गोमती, कोसी और घाघरा। वैसे गंगोत्री से 21 किलोमीटर दक्षिण-पूर्व स्थित गोमुख को गंगा का वास्तविक उद्गम स्थल माना जाता है। गंगा नदी की प्रधान शाखा भागीरथी है, जो कुमाऊँ में हिमालय के गोमुख नामक स्थान पर गंगोत्री हिमनद से निकलती है। गंगा के इस उद्गम स्थल की ऊँचाई 3140 मीटर है। यहाँ गंगा जी को समर्पित एक मंदिर भी है। गंगोत्री तीर्थ, शहर से 19 किलोमीटर उत्तर की ओर 3892 मीटर (12,770 फीट) की ऊँचाई पर इस हिमनद का मुख है।
गंगा नदी का बेसिन विश्व के सबसे अधिक उपजाऊ क्षेत्र के रूप में जाना जाता है और यहां सबसे अधिक घनी आबादी निवास करती है तथा यह लगभग 1,000,000 वर्ग किलो मीटर में फैला हिस्सा है। नदी पर दो बांध बनाए गए हैं – एक हरिद्वार में और दूसरा फरक्का में। गंगा नदी में पाई जाने वाली डॉलफिन एक संकटापन्न जंतु है, जो विशिष्ट रूप से इसी नदी में वास करती है।
गंगा नदी का न सिर्फ़ सांस्कृतिक और आध्यात्मिक महत्व है बल्कि देश की 40% आबादी गंगा नदी पर निर्भर है। 2014 में न्यूयॉर्क में मैडिसन स्क्वायर गार्डन में भारतीय समुदाय को संबोधित करते हुए प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी ने कहा था, “अगर हम इसे साफ करने में सक्षम हो गए तो यह देश की 40 फीसदी आबादी के लिए एक बड़ी मदद साबित होगी.”
गंगा नदी को हिन्दु समुदाय में पृथ्वी की सबसे अधिक पवित्र नदी माना जाता है। मुख्य धार्मिक आयोजन नदी के किनारे स्थित शहरों में किए जाते हैं जैसे वाराणसी, हरिद्वार और इलाहाबाद। गंगा नदी बांग्लादेश के सुंदर वन द्वीप में गंगा डेल्टा पर आकर व्यापक हो जाती है और इसके बाद बंगाल की खाड़ी में मिलकर इसकी यात्रा पूरी होती है।
पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, भागीरथी के 60000 पूर्वज, ऋषि कपिला के शाप के कारण भस्म हो गए थे, जिनकी मुक्ति के लिए गंगाजल का होना आवश्यवक था, इसीलिए भागीरथी ने कड़ी तपस्या की और स्वर्ग में भगवान ब्रह्मा के कमंडल में बैठी गंगा जी को धरती पर बुला लिया.
भागीरथी नदी, देवप्रयाग में अलकनंदा से मिलकर गंगा का निर्माण करती है. इसी संगम स्थल के बाद से नदी को ‘गंगा’ के नाम से जाना जाता है. गंगा हिमालय से यमुना, घाघरा, गंडक और कोसी नदियों जैसे कई नदियों से जुड़ती है. यमुना नदी यमुनोत्री ग्लेशियर से निकलती है, लेकिन इलाहाबाद में गंगा नदी में शामिल हो जाती है. प्रायद्वीपीय उपनगरों से आने वाली मुख्य सहायक नदियां चंबल, बेतवा और सोन हैं.
एक पर्यावरण अभियंता रुड़की के डीएस भार्गव ने अध्ययन किया और पाया कि गंगा दुनिया की एकमात्र नदी है जो पूरी दुनिया में अन्य नदियों की तुलना में कार्बनिक कचरे को 15 से 25 गुना तेज विघटित कर सकती है. गंगा डेल्टा नदियों के तलछट समृद्ध प्रवाह द्वारा गंगा और ब्रह्मपुत्र दुनिया में सबसे बड़ा नदी डेल्टा है, जो 59,000 वर्ग किलोमीटर के क्षेत्र में फैला हुआ है. पिछले कुछ दशकों में हरिद्वार में गंगा अपने मूल पाठ्यक्रम से 500 मीटर तक स्थानांतरित हो गई है. बिहार में भी नदी के कुछ हिस्से 1990 से 2.5 किमी से अधिक स्थानांतरित हो गए हैं.
ऐतिहासिक रूप से गंगा के मैदान से ही हिन्दुस्तान का हृदय स्थल निर्मित है और वही बाद में आने वाली विभिन्न सभ्यताओं का पालना बना। अशोक के ई. पू. के साम्राज्य का केन्द्र पाटलिपुत्र (पटना), बिहार में गंगा के तट पर बसा हुआ था। महान् मुग़ल साम्राज्य के केन्द्र दिल्ली और आगरा भी गंगा के बेसिन की पश्चिमी सीमाओं पर स्थित थे। सातवीं सदी के मध्य में कानपुर के उत्तर में गंगा तट पर स्थित कन्नौज, जिसमें अधिकांश उत्तरी भारत आता था, हर्ष के सामन्तकालीन साम्राज्य का केन्द्र था। ऐतिहासिक रूप से गंगा के मैदान से ही हिन्दुस्तान का हृदय स्थल निर्मित है और वही बाद में आने वाली विभिन्न सभ्यताओं का पालना बना। मुस्लिम काल के दौरान, यानी 12वीं सदी से मुसलमानों का शासन न केवल मैदान, बल्कि बंगाल तक फैला हुआ था। डेल्टा क्षेत्र के ढाका और मुर्शिदाबाद मुस्लिम सत्ता के केन्द्र थे।
भारत की राष्ट्र-नदी गंगा जल ही नहीं, अपितु भारत और हिन्दी साहित्य की मानवीय चेतना को भी प्रवाहित करती है। ऋग्वेद, महाभारत, रामायण एवं अनेक पुराणों में गंगा को पुण्य सलिला, पाप-नाशिनी, मोक्ष प्रदायिनी, सरित्श्रेष्ठा एवं महानदी कहा गया है। संस्कृत कवि जगन्नाथ राय ने गंगा की स्तुति में ‘श्रीगंगालहरी’ नामक काव्य की रचना की है। हिन्दी के आदि महाकाव्य पृथ्वीराज रासो तथा वीसलदेव रास नरपति नाल्ह) में गंगा का उल्लेख है। आदिकाल का सर्वाधिक लोक विश्रुत ग्रंथ जगनिक रचित आल्हाखण्ड में गंगा, यमुना और सरस्वती का उल्लेख है।
