हरतालिका व्रत को हरतालिका तीज या तीजा भी कहते हैं। यह व्रत भाद्रपद मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया को हस्त नक्षत्र के दिन होता है। इस दिन कुमारी और सौभाग्यवती स्त्रियाँ गौरी-शङ्कर की पूजा करती हैं।हरतालिका व्रत को हरतालिका तीज या तीजा भी कहते हैं। यह व्रत भाद्रपद मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया को हस्त नक्षत्र के दिन होता है। इस दिन कुमारी और सौभाग्यवती स्त्रियाँ गौरी-शङ्कर की पूजा करती हैं।धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार मां पार्वती ने भगवान शिव को पति रूप में पाने के लिए कठोर तप किया था।
हरतालिका तीज पर स्त्रियां व्रत रखकर भगवान गणेश एवं शिव-पार्वती का पूजन करती हैं, जिससे उनका दांपत्य जीवन सुखद रहता है एवं परिवार में खुशियां बनी रहती हैं। इस व्रत को निर्जल रहकर किया जाता है। रात में महिलाएं भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती के गीतों पर नृत्य भी करती हैं। अगर अविवाहित कन्याएं हरतालिका तीज का उपवास करती हैं तो उन्हें अच्छा जीवनसाथी मिलता है। वहीं सुहागिन महिलाओं के पति की आयु दीर्घ होती है। इस अवसर पर महिलाएं पूरा श्रृंगार करके नए वस्त्र और आभूषण पहनकर लोकगीत गीत गाती हैं। इस पारंपरिक पर्व से जीवन नए उमंग-उल्लास और प्रेम के रंग में रंग जाता है।
इस व्रत के व्रती सो नही सकते ।इसके लिए उसे रात्रि में भजन कीर्तन के साथ रात्रि जागरण करना पड़ता है। प्रातः काल स्नान करने के पश्चात् श्रद्धा एवम भक्ति पूर्वक किसी सुपात्र सुहागिन महिला को श्रृंगार सामग्री ,वस्त्र ,खाद्य सामग्री ,फल ,मिष्ठान्न एवम यथा शक्ति आभूषण का दान करना चाहिए। यह व्रत बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है । प्रत्येक सौभाग्यवती स्त्री इस व्रत को रखने में अपना परम सौभाग्य समझती है।
इस व्रत को कुमारी कन्याएँ व सुहागिन महिलाएँ दोनों ही करती हैं, परन्तु एक बार व्रत रखने के उपरांत जीवन पर्यन्त इस व्रत को रखना पड़ता है। यदि व्रती महिला गंभीर रोगी स्थिति में हो तो उसके स्थान पर दूसरी महिला व उसका पति भी इस व्रत को रख सकने का विधान है। अधिकांश तौर पर इस व्रत को पूर्वी उत्तरप्रदेश और बिहार के लोग मनातें हैं । महाराष्ट्र में भी इस व्रत का पालन किया जाता है, क्योंकि अगले दिन ही गणेश चतुर्थी के दिन गणेश स्थापना की जाती है।
इस व्रत की कथा है कि मां पार्वती बचपन से ही भगवान शिव को पाना चाहती थीं। पति के रूप में स्वयं शिव स्वरूप को पाना था। जिसके लिए उन्होंने हिमालय पर्वत के गंगा तट पर बचपन से ही कठोर तपस्या शुरू कर दी। उनकी यह कठोर तपस्या उनके माता पिता के लिए दुखी करने वाली थी। एक दिन देवऋषि नारद ने पार्वती के समक्ष भगवान विष्णु से विवाह का प्रस्ताव लेकर उपस्थित हुए।जिसे पार्वती ने ठुकरा दिया। इसके बाद पार्वती घने जंगलों एवं गुफाओं में भगवान शिव की अराधना करने लगीं। भाद्रपद तृतीया शुक्ल पक्ष के दिन हस्त नक्षत्र में पार्वती ने मिट्टी के शिवलिंग का निर्माण कर विधिवत पूजन कर रातभर जागरण किया।जिससे खुस हो कर भगवान शिव ने माता पार्वती को अपनी पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार करने का वचन दिया।
इस तरह माता पार्वती और शिव का मिलन हुआ और जग का उद्धार। कहा जाता है कि जो भी महिला इस वर्त को करती है उनके सुहाग की उम्र लंबी होती है तथा वैवाहिक जीवन खुशहाल होता है। मान्यता यह भी है कि जो कोई भी इस व्रत को पूरी निष्ठा और भाव के साथ करती है,उसे इच्छानुसार वर मिलता है।
