History of Indian Theater: भारत में रंगमंच का इतिहास बहुत पुराना है। ऐसा समझा जाता है कि नाट्यकला का विकास सर्वप्रथम भारत में ही हुआ था। ऋगवेद के कतिपय सूत्रों में यम और यमी, पुरूरवा और उर्वशी के संवाद के बारे में लिखा गया है। कहते हैं इस तरह के संवाद ने ही आगे चलकर नाटक को विकसित और सुदृढ़ किया। इतिहासकारों का अनुमान है कि इन्हीं संवादों से प्रेरणा ग्रहण कर लोगों ने नाटक की रचना की और नाट्यकला का विकास हुआ। भारतीय संस्कृति, विश्व की सबसे प्राचीन और समृद्ध संस्कृतियों में से एक है, जिसका प्रत्येक पक्ष इसकी खूबसूरती को दर्शाता है। भारतीय रंगमंच भारतीय संस्कृति का ही हिस्सा रहा है। भारत के शास्त्रीय रंगमंच का प्रारंभिक रूप संस्कृत रंगमंच था जो पश्चिम में ग्रीक और रोमन रंगमंच के विकास के बाद अस्तित्व में आया।
भारत में रंगमंच की एक समृद्ध परंपरा है। इसका देश के प्राचीन अनुष्ठानों और मौसमी उत्सवों से निकटता का संबंध है। भरत मुनि द्वारा रचित नाट्य-शास्त्र विश्व की सबसे प्राचीनतम नाट्य ग्रंथ है। इसमें नाटक के कुल दस वर्गीकरण का वर्णन किया गया है। भारत में व्याप्त पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार शुरू के समय में नाटक का केंद्रबिंदु देवता तथा असुर के संग्राम या इन से जुड़ी अन्य कहानियों पर ही होता था। भारत में रंगमंच एक कथा के रूप में प्रारंभ हुआ, जिसमें सस्वपाठ, गायन और नृत्य समय के साथ रंगमंच का अभिन्न अंग बन गए। भारतीय कथाओं, साहित्यों और कलाओं के विभिन्न रूपों के भौतिक प्रदर्शन के लिए रंगमंच का निर्माण किया गया।
कहते हैं भारत में जब सिकंदर का हमला हुआ था उस दौरान ग्रीक सेना द्वारा किया गया मंचन ने, भारतीय प्रदर्शन कला को बहुत हद तक प्रभावित किया जबकि कुछ विद्वान यह मानते हैं कि भारतीय रंगमंच की शुरूआत और विकास स्वत: स्फूर्त थी। हालांकि विद्वानों में यह सहमति अवश्य है कि भारतीय शास्त्रीय रंगमंच को यूनानी रंगमंच ने कुछ स्तर तक रूपांतरित तो अवश्य किया होगा। समय का पहिया घूमता गया और 10 और 11 वीं सदी में इस्लामी दौर शुरू हुआ। इस दौरान भारतीय रंगमंच का विकसित स्वरूप बिल्कुल से हतोत्साहित होकर बौना हो गया। समय का पहिया रुकता कहां है। कहते हैं 15 वीं से 19 वीं शताब्दी तक बड़ी संख्या में भारतीय रंगमंच के क्षेत्रीय स्वरूप का विकास होना आरंभ हो गया। 17 वीं शताब्दी आते-आते मेरठ में मुक्ताकाश नाट्य संगठन भी स्थापित हो चुका था, जिसने तत्कालीन समाज की वास्तविकताओ को रंगमंच के माध्यम से लोगों के सामने पेश करने का प्रयास किया। आधुनिक भारतीय रंगमंच का खाका ब्रिट्रिश औपनिवेशिक शासन के अधीन 19वीं, 20वीं सदी के मध्य तक विकसित हुआ।
इस दौरान भारत की नाट्य शैली में पाश्चात्य शैली का भी सम्मिश्रण होने लगा था। इसका स्पष्ट उदाहरण उस समय के पश्चिमी शास्त्रीय नाटकों, विशेषकर शेक्सपियर की अनुवादित रचनाओं के रूप में देखा जा सकता है। नए शहरों के विकास और शहरी वर्ग के मनोरंजन के रूप में इसका खूब विकास हुआ। औधोगिक शहरों की बढ़ती आबादी के मनोरंजन ने इसको फलने-फूलने का एक अवसर प्रदान किया।
भारत में रंगमंच के विकास का दूसरा चरण लोक रंगमंच का रहा है। जिनका आधार मौखिक परंपरा रहा है। भारत के अधिकांश हिस्से में आपको आज भी यह कई स्थानों पर देखने को मिल जाएगा। भारतीय रंगमंच मुख्यत: दो भागों में विभाजित था पहला धार्मिक और दूसरा लौकिक। धार्मिक में मुख्य रूप से धर्म आधार था और लोक रंगमंच में प्रेम और वीरता। समय के साथ इसके मनोरंजक स्वरूप को संवेदनशील वर्गों ने विशेष रूप से भारत के शिक्षित लोगों ने इसकी आलोचना की जिससे साहित्यिक नाटक के दरवाजे खुले। साहित्यिक नाटक ने रविन्द्रनाथ टैगोर जैसे प्रतिभाशाली साहित्यकारों के विचारों को अपने में विस्तार देना शुरू किया और भारतीय रंगमंच की समृद्धि ने समय के साथ आसमान को छूआ।
