भारतीय समाज में पीढ़ियों का गैप हमेशा से रहा है. आने वाली हर नयी पीढ़ी को अपने पुराने पीढ़ी से कुछ शिकायतें रहती है. मोबाइल और इन्टरनेट ने नई पीढ़ी का ज्ञान बढ़ाया है और बढ़ाई है व्यक्तिगत स्वतंत्रता, जिससे पश्चिमी नजरिया विकसित हो रहा है। अब मातृ देवो भव और पितृ देवो भव का जमाना नहीं रहा। इसके विपरीत बुजुर्गों के लिए दुनिया बदली नहीं है और उनकी अपेक्षाएं वहीं पुरानी हैं। आवश्यकता है एक-दूसरे को समझने की।
कई बार बच्चों की शादियां टकराव का कारण बनती हैं। आज के बच्चे नहीं मानते कि शादियों का फैसला स्वर्ग में होता है और सात जन्म तक रहता है। वे मां बाप की सहमति से शादी करते हैं और आपसी सहमति से अलग हो जाते हैं, जैसे कोई इकरारनामा हो। यह बड़ों की जिम्मेदारी है कि अपने सामाजिक मूल्यों को बचाते हुए बच्चों के विचारों को कैसे समायोजित करें।
समाजशास्त्रियों का मानना है कि पाश्चात्य संस्कृति के अंधानुकरण से यह स्थिति आई है। पूंजीवादी अर्थव्यवस्था तथा वैश्वीकरण के कारण भारत के प्राचीन सांस्कृतिक मूल्यों में गिरावट के लक्षण दिखाई देने लगे है। धन के प्रति बढ़ रही आसक्ति के कारण व्यक्ति के पास समाज तथा परिवार के लिए समय की कमी हो गई है। रही सही कसर मनोरंजन के इलेक्ट्रानिक संसाधनों ने पूरे कर दिए हैं। इससे परिवार एवं समाज में परस्पर संवादहीनता का दौर तेज हो गया है। इस स्थिति के साथ ही भौतिकतावादी परिवेश तथा प्रतिस्पर्धा ने भी पारिवारिक एवं सामाजिक रिश्तों पर व्यापक असर डाला है। इसके चलते माता-पिता, पति-पत्नी नजदीकी रिश्तेदारों के बीच दूरियां बढ़ती जा रही है। जो भारतीय संस्कृति के संयुक्त परिवार की अवधारणा पर सीधा असर डाल रही है।
पश्चिमी देशों विशेषकर अमेरिका में हिप्पी लोग अपने माता पिता से पृथक हो जाते हैं, स्कूल कालेजों के छात्र हिंसक हो जाते हैं और नशे के आदी बनते हैं। वे 18 साल की उम्र आते-आते घर छोड़ देते हैं। माता पिता का अधिकार घटता जाता है और वे अपना स्वतंत्र अस्तित्व महसूस करते हैं।
