इंडिया गेट (वास्तविक रूप से इसे अखिल भारतीय युद्ध स्मारक भी कहा जाता है) एक युद्ध स्मारक है, जो राजपथ, नई दिल्ली में बना हुआ है. राजपथ को प्राचीन समय में किंग्सवे भी कहा जाता था. मूल रूप से अखिल भारतीय युद्ध स्मारक के रूप में जाने जाने वाले इस स्मारक का निर्माण अंग्रेज शासकों द्वारा उन 82000 भारतीय सैनिकों की स्मृति में किया गया था, जो ब्रिटिश सेना में भर्ती होकर प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध और अफगान युद्धों में शहीद हुए थे. यूनाइटेड किंगडम के कुछ सैनिकों और अधिकारियों सहित 13300 सैनिकों के नाम, गेट पर उत्कीर्ण हैं, लाल और पीले बलुआ पत्थरों से बना हुआ यह स्मारक दर्शनीय है. यह ऐतिहासिक धरोहर इम्पीरियल वॉर ग्रेव कमीशन का भी एक भाग है, जिसकी स्थापना प्रथम विश्व युद्ध में मारे गए सैनिको के लिए की गई थी.
जब इण्डिया गेट बनकर तैयार हुआ था तब इसके सामने जार्ज पंचम की एक मूर्ति लगी हुई थी. जिसे बाद में ब्रिटिश राज के समय की अन्य मूर्तियों के साथ कोरोनेशन पार्क में स्थापित कर दिया गया. यह कोरोनेशन पार्क बुराड़ी क्षेत्र में है. अब जार्ज पंचम की मूर्ति की जगह प्रतीक के रूप में केवल एक छतरी भर रह गई है. बता दें कि 1920 के दशक तक,पुरानी दिल्ली रेलवे स्टेशन पूरे शहर का एकमात्र रेलवे स्टेशन हुआ करता था. आगरा-दिल्ली रेलवे लाइन उस समय लुटियन की दिल्ली और किंग्सवे यानी राजाओं के गुजरने का रास्ता, जिसे अब हिन्दी में राजपथ नाम दे दिया गया है, पर स्थित वर्तमान इण्डिया गेट के निर्माण-स्थल से होकर गुजरती थी. आखिरकार इस रेलवे लाइन को यमुना नदी के पास स्थानान्तरित कर दिया गया.
इसके बाद सन् 1924 में जब यह मार्ग प्रारम्भ हुआ तब कहीं जाकर स्मारक स्थल का निर्माण शुरू हो सका. 42 मीटर ऊँचे इण्डिया गेट से होकर कई महत्वपूर्ण मार्ग निकलते हैं. पहले इण्डिया गेट के आसपास होकर काफी यातायात गुजरता था, परन्तु अब इसे भारी वाहनों के लिये बन्द कर दिया गया है.
625 मीटर के व्यास में स्थित इण्डिया गेट का षट्भुजीय क्षेत्र 306,000 वर्ग मीटर के क्षेत्रफल में फैला है. 1971 में बांग्लादेश आजादी युद्ध के समय काले मार्बल पत्थरों के छोटे-छोटे स्मारक व छोटी-छोटी कलाकृतियाँ बनाई गई थी. इस कलाकृति को अमर जवान ज्योति भी कहा जाता है, क्योंकि 1971 से ही यहां भारत के अकथित सैनिकों की कब्र बनाई हुई है. शहीद सैनिकों की स्मृति में यहाँ एक राइफल के ऊपर सैनिक की टोपी रखी गयी है, जिसके चार कोनों पर सदैव ‘अमर जवान ज्योति’ जलती रहती है. 1972 में गणतंत्र दिवस के मौके पर भारत की प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी ने इसे जलाया था. इसकी दीवारों पर उन हजारों शहीद सैनिकों के नाम हैं. दीवार पर उन सैनिको के नाम लगे हुए है जिन्होंने अफगान और प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के समय अपने प्राणों की आहुति दी थी.
बता दें कि बेहतरीन युद्ध स्मारक डिजाइनरों में से एक सर एडविन लुटियंस ने नई दिल्ली में अखिल भारतीय युद्ध स्मारक के लिए डिजाइन का मसौदा तैयार किया. इंडिया गेट के टॉप पर एक गुंबद के आकार का कटोरा है जो विशेष अवसरों पर जलते हुए तेल से शायद ही कभी भरा जाता है. इंडिया गेट धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक भावनाओं को छोड़कर एक धर्मनिरपेक्ष स्मारक है. लुटियन ने धार्मिक अलंकरण से मुक्त सार्वभौमिक वास्तुकला शैली का उपयोग किया. इसे आर्क डी ट्रायम्फ के रीमेक के रूप में भी कहा जाता है. इसके अलावा 150 मीटर की दूरी पर शानदार इंडिया गेट के ठीक पीछे, एक छतरी जैसी संरचना है, जिसे एडविन लुटियन ने भी बनाया था.
