सावन के महीने को बरसात ऋतु का पर्याय माना जाता है. इसी कारण, यह साहित्यकारों को बहुत प्रिय रहा है. साहित्य सर्जना के अंकुर फूट जाते हैं. संस्कृत साहित्य में अगर कालिदास के वर्षा ऋतु के वर्णन को सबसे अनुपम पक्ष माना जाता है तो वजह यही है कि कालिदास ने वर्षा को महसूस किया है. पानी की फुहारों से लेकर यौवन को भिगो देने वाली बारिश में मन कैसे उल्लास और उमंग से कुलांचे भरता है या इस ऋतु में विरह पीड़ा कैसे उमड़ती-घुमड़ती है, उसका रोचक वर्णन भारतीय साहित्य में देखने को मिलता है.
हिन्दी भाषा के साहित्यकारों ने श्रावण मास को एक ओर तो पावन मास के रूप में चित्रित किया वहीं दूसरी ओर प्रेम प्रीति के सौन्दर्य से सराबोर प्रेम व विरह के विरोधाभास लिए उजाले अंधेरों की अद्भुत शब्द लड़ियां पिरो कर सुन्दर सृजन मालाएँ सजाई हैं.
चाहे वह हिंदी साहित्य का मध्ययुग हो, जिसमें तुलसी, सूर, जायसी आदि कवियों ने पावस ऋतु का सुंदर और सरस चित्रण किया है या आधुनिक हिंदी साहित्य में छायावादी कवियों में जयशंकर प्रसाद, सुमित्रानंदन पंत , सूर्यकांत त्रिपाठी निराला या महादेवी वर्मा द्वारा लिखी वर्षा संबंधी कविताएं हों, सबने सावन के ऊपर लेखनी चलाकर अपना तन-मन भिगोया है.
रामधारी सिंह दिनकर अपनी वीर रस की कविताओं के लिए जाने जाते हैं. गंभीर विश्लेषण उनकी पहचान रही है। लेकिन सावन के आकर्षण ने उनको भी बांध लिया. सावन की सुंदरता को देखकर उनकी लेखनी ने चहकते हुए लिखा कि-
जेठ नहीं, यह जलन हृदय की,
उठकर जरा देख तो ले,
जगती में सावन आया है,
मायाविनी! सपने धो ले।
जलना तो था बदा भाग्य में
कविते! बारह मास तुझे,
आज विश्व की हरियाली पी
कुछ तो प्रिये, हरी हो ले।
नंदन आन बसा मरु में,
घन के आंसू वरदान हुए;
अब तो रोना पाप नहीं,
पावस में सखि! जी भर रो ले।
अपनी बात कहूं क्या? मेरी
भाग्य लीक प्रतिकूल हुई;
हरियाली को देख आज फिर
हरे हुए दिल के फोले।
गोपालदास नीरज ने सावन को केंद्र में रखकर एक सुंदर कविता लिखी . उनकी यह कविता नए लोगों की व्यवस्था की विसंगतियों को संबोधित करती है. अधिकांश कवियों ने सावन का उल्लेख प्राकृतिक सुंदरता, प्रेम-प्रसंगों कें संदर्भ में किया है लेकिन नीरज ने सावन को आमजन की समस्याओं और उनके साथ होने वाले अन्याय से जोड़ा है. इसलिए उनका ‘सावन पाठ’ अनूठा बन पड़ा है-
अब के सावन में ये शरारत मेरे साथ हुई,
मेरा घर छोड़ के पूरे शहर में बरसात हुई.
आप मत पूछिए क्या हम पे सफर में गुजरी?
था लुटेरों का जहा गांव वहीं रात हुई.
जिंदगी-भर तो हुई गुफ्तगू गैरों से मगर,
आज तक हमसे न हमारी मुलाकात हुई.
हर गलत मोड़ पे टोका है किसी ने मुझको,
एक आवाज जब से तेरी मेरे साथ हुई.
मैंने सोचा कि मेरे देश की हालत क्या है,
एक कातिल से तभी मेरी मुलाकात हुई.
महादेवी वर्मा बोलती हैं-
“नव मेघों को रोता था
जब चातक का बालक मन,
इन आँखों में करुणा के
घिर घिर आते थे सावन”
सुमित्रानंदन पंत के सावन को देखिए-
“ढम ढम ढम ढम ढम ढम
बादल ने फिर ढोल बजाए।
छम छम छम छम छम छम
बूँदों ने घुंघरू छनकाए.”
तो गुलज़ार साहब फरमाया रहे हैं –
“बारिश आती है तो मेरे शहर को कुछ हो जाता है”
गोपालदास नीरज कहते हैं – “यदि मैं होता घन सावन का
पिया पिया कह मुझको भी पपिहरी बुलाती कोई”
