भारतीय रेल का नेटवर्क आज दुनिया में अमेरिका, रूस एवं चीन के बाद चौथा सबसे बड़ा नेटवर्क हैI वहीं, तकनीक के मामले में भारतीय रेल इनसे काफी हद तक पीछे हैI भारतीय रेल का नेटवर्क 1.16 लाख कि.मी. लंबा हैI इस नेटवर्क पर 15 हज़ार रेलगाड़ियाँ दौड़ती हैं और और ये 6 हज़ार स्टेशनों को जोड़ कर रखती हैI गौरतलब है कि करीब 2 करोड़ लोग रोज़ रेलगाड़ियों के ज़रिए अपने गंतव्य तक पहुंचते हैंI
आज आधुनिकता व भागम-भाग वाली जीवन शैली में लोग लोक कला को दिनों दिन भूलते जा रहे हैं। पूरे विश्व को सभ्यता व संस्कृति का पाठ पढ़ाने वाले भारत देश के लोग ही आज अपनी सभ्यता और संस्कृति को बचाने के लिए जूझ रहा है। विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में भी लोक कला का दम घुटता जा रहा है। अगर ऐसा ही रहा तो आने वाली पीढ़ी को शायद हमारी कला और संस्कृति का ज्ञान भी नहीं होगा। कला को संरक्षित करने को लेकर न तो कोई ठोस पहल हो रही और न ही लोग इस मामले को गंभीरता से ले रहे हैं। पर इस मसले को गंभीरता से लिया है भारतीय रेलवे ने जो भारतीय लोक कला व संस्कृति को बचाने और लोगों को इससे रूबरू करवाने के लिए अपनी ट्रेनों का सहारा ले रही है।
भारतीय रेलवे ने विभिन्न लोक कला और पेंटिंग्स को जन-जन तक पहुंचाने के एक विशेष योजना बनाई है। जिसके अंतर्गत लोक कला को प्रमोट करने के लिए विभिन्न क्षेत्रों के आने वाली ट्रेनों को वहां के लोकल कला से सजाया जाएगा। भारतीय रेलवे के इस प्रयास से अब जल्द ही ट्रेनों की सूरत बदली हुई दिखेगी।
इसकी शुरुआत भी रेलवे ने बिहार से कर दी है। मिथिला पेंटिंग या मधुबनी पेंटिंग के नाम से प्रसिद्ध बिहार के मिथिला की चित्रकला अब ट्रेन पर भी दिखेगी। अभी तक मधुबनी, दरभंगा और पटना रेलवे स्टेशन को मिथिला पेंटिंग से सजाया और संवारा गया था लेकिन अब रेलवे एक नया प्रयोग करने जा रही है। रेलवे की इस पहल की शुरुआत दरभंगा से की है। दरभंगा रेलवे यार्ड में एक बोगी को मिथिला पेंटिंग से सजाया गया है। मिथिला पेंटिंग को बढ़ावा देने की कवायद पिछले कई सालों से चली आ रही है। दीवार के बाद अब ट्रेनों को भी मिथिला पेंटिंग से पाटने की तैयारी शुरू हो गई है।
गौरतलब है कि मिथिला पेटिंग का इतिहास काफी पुराना है, इससे लोगों को इसकी खूबसूरती के साथ साथ इसके इतिहास का भी ज्ञान होगा। संभावना जताई जा रही है कि रेलवे आनेवाले कुछ दिनों में कई और ट्रेन मिथिला पेंटिंग को उकेरने के लिए मंजूरी देगी। अभी इस पेंटिंग की मांग देश और विदेश में बहुत ज्यादा है। रेलवे की इस पहल से लोगों के बीच इसकी मांग और बढ़ेगी साथ ही कलाकारों को रोजगार भी बढ़ेगा।
भारतीय रेलवे ने अतीत में तकनीकी ज्ञान और दक्षता के लिए प्रयास किया है तथा आज भी अपनी व्यापारिक प्रक्रिया में सभी तकनीकी परिवर्तनों को अपनाते हुए कार्य करने का प्रयास कर रही है । हम आज भी तकनीक में आने वाले बदलावों साथ तालमेल बैठाने तथा देश की अर्थव्यवस्था में आए अवरोध को दूर करने के प्रति प्रयासरत है।
बेहतर विकास के लिए अपने आधारभूत ढाँचे को मजबूत करना आज प्रत्येक संगठन की आवश्यकता बन गई है। इस क्षेत्र के विकास के लिए उत्तर रेलवे ने सुनियोजित एवं चरणबद्ध तरीके से कार्य किया है और इसके चलते स्वत: ही पर्यटन का भी विस्तार हुआ है।
भारतीय रेलवे बहुत से रोचक तथ्यों को समेटे अपने आप में एक अनूठा नेटवर्क हैI 1072 मीटर लंबे खड़गपुर रेल्वे स्टेशन को दुनिया का सबसे लंबा रेल्वे प्लेटफार्म माना जाता हैI वहीं, फेयरी क्वीन दुनिया में सबसे पुराना इंजन माना जाता है जो अभी भी कार्यरत हैI भारतीय रेल्वे के अंतर्गत एक विशेष तरह की रेल भी चलाई जाती है जिसे लाइफलाइन एक्सप्रेस के नाम से जाना जाता हैI इसे हॉस्पिटल ओन व्हील भी बुलाते हैं जिसमें ऑपरेशन रूम से लेकर इलाज तक की सारी सुविधाएं मुहैया कराई जाती हैंI
सबसे लंबी दूरी की रेल के बारे में बात की जाए तो कन्याकुमारी और जम्मू-तवी के बीच चलने वाली हिमसागर एक्सप्रेस का नाम आता है जिसका रूट 3745 किलोमीटर हैI कुछ और महत्वपूर्ण बातों का ज़िक्र किया जाए तो जन शताब्दी ट्रेन की शुरुआत वर्ष 2002 में हुई थीI
