जी हां हम बात कर रहे हैं उस समय के भारत के बिजनेसमैन वीरजी वोरा की। कहा जाता है कि वीर जी वोरा इतने अमीर थे कि मुगलों और अंग्रेजों को लोन दिया करते थे। सन 1590 में जन्मे वीरजी ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के बड़े फाइनेंसर हुआ करते थे। इतिहासकारों की माने तो सूरत के रहने वाले विरजी वोरा थोक व्यापारी, साहूकार और बैंकर भी थे। विरजी दुनिया भर के बाजार की नब्ज पकड़ना बहुत अच्छे से जानते थे। उनकी व्यापार करने का ढ़ंग उस समय के सभी व्यापारियों से अलग था। विशेष वस्तुओं की बढ़ी मांग और उसके स्टॉक से मुनाफा कमाना क्या खूब आता था।
कहा जाता है कि विरजी वोरा का दुनिया भर में डंका बजता था। कहा जाता है कि मुगल बादशाह औरंगजेब जब दक्कन की राजनीति में फंस गया था और उसकी वित्तीय हालात ख़राब हो गई थी तब उसने सभी बड़े व्यवसायी से सहायता मांगी थी लेकिन अंत में उसे, सूरत के इसी व्यवसायी से ब्याज मुक्त क़र्ज़ मिला था और उसे खाली हाथ नहीं लौटना पड़ा था। उस समय के सबसे दिग्गज व्यपारी के रूप में इतिहास में कई जगह दर्ज हैं विरजी वोरा। कहा तो यह भी जाता है कि विरजी ने मुगल सम्राट शाहजहां को भी 4 अरबी घोड़े गिफ्ट में दिए थे।
भारत में डच ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी को दी गई अधिकांश पूंजी भी विरजी वोरा और उनके करीबी शांति दास झावेरी से आई थी। हालांकि अंग्रेज और डच दोनों अक्सर हुंडियों के माध्यम से सूरत और आगरा तक बड़ी मात्रा में धन भेजने के लिए इनकी सुविधाओं का उपयोग करते थे।
इतिहासकार बताते हैं कि 1664 में जब मराठा प्रमुख शिवाजी महाराज ने सूरत पर छापा मारा था तो विरजी के पास से बड़ी मात्रा में मोती, माणिक, पन्ना और हीरे के साथ बड़ी मात्रा में धन भी लूट कर ले गए। इतिहास के पन्नों में दर्ज है कि एक डच चश्मदीद वॉलक्वार्ड इवरसन के अनुसार शिवाजी को वीरजी से 6 बैरल सोना, मोती, रत्न और कीमती सामान मिले थे। और यह अनुमानत: 50 हजार यूरो के बराबर की राशि थी। वीरजी के पास इतना धन था कि मराठा आक्रमण के बाद भी वह पूरी तरह बर्बाद नहीं हुए। वीरजी के बारे में 1670 के बाद कोई विशेष उल्लेख नहीं मिलता है सूरत में फ्रांसीसी संचालन के प्रमुख फ्रेंकोइस मार्टन ने बोरा ब्रदर्स कह कर संबोधित किया है। अंग्रेज इन्हें मर्चेंट प्रिंस कह कर बुलाते थे।
