भारत में योग की परंपरा उतनी ही पुरानी है जितनी कि भारतीय संस्कृति। किसी न किसी रूप में इसके साक्ष्य पूर्व वैदिक काल और हड़प्पा-मोहनजोदड़ो की सभ्यताओं से भी पहले से ही मौजूद रहे हैं। सालों में गिना जाय तो इसका इतिहास 10 हजार साल से भी पुराना बताया जाता है। पौराणिक परंपराओं के अनुसार, भगवान शिव को योग का संस्थापक (आदि योगी) कहा जाता है और पार्वती योग की उनकी पहली शिष्या थीं। योग के जानकारों के अनुसार योग का उल्लेख सबसे प्राचीन ग्रंथ ऋग्वेद में मौजूद है। इसके माध्यम से ऋषि-मुनि और योगी गण सत्य एवं तप के अनुष्ठान से ब्रह्माण्ड के अनेक रहस्यों से साक्षात्कार करते आए हैं। आध्यात्मिक ग्रंथों के अनुसार योग करने से व्यक्ति की चेतना, ब्रह्मांड की चेतना से जुड़ जाती है। इसके असर से मन एवं शरीर और मानव एवं प्रकृति के बीच पूर्ण सामंजस्य की अनुभूति होने लगती है। यह चिंतन, सोच एवं कार्य के बीच एकीकरण एवं तालमेल स्थापित करता है। सदियों से योग की कई शाखाएं विकसित हुई हैं। लेकिन इस बात पर आम सहमति है कि इसका विकास पूर्ण रूप से भारत में मानव सभ्यता के शुरू में, पूर्व वैदिक काल में हुआ।
‘‘सर्ववेदार्थ सारोऽत्र वेद व्यासेन भाषितः। योग भाष्यभिषेणातों मुमुक्ष्णमिद गर्त।।’’3.
व्यास भाष्य में योग-विद्या को स्पष्ट रूप से स्वीकार किया गया है। यह तथ्य पूर्ण रूप से प्रमाणित है कि वेदों में निहित गूढ़ अर्थ का प्रतिपादन योग शास्त्रों में है। इसी तरह गीता में एक जगह कहा गया है, ‘योग: कर्मसु कौशलम्’। यानी जो योग की साधना करता है, उसके कर्मो में कुशलता आती है, निपुणता आती है। गीता में ये भी कहा गया है, ‘योगस्थ: कुरु कर्माणि’ अर्थात् योग में रमकर कर्म करो।
“योग याज्ञवल्क्य” के प्रसिद्ध संवाद का भी जिक्र है जो ऋषि याज्ञवल्क्य और शिष्य ब्रह्मवादी गार्गी के बीच हुआ। इसमें सांस लेने की कई तकनीकें, शारीरिक स्वास्थ्य से जुड़े आसन और ध्यान का भी उल्लेख है। गार्गी ने छांदोग्य उपनिषद में भी योगासन के बारे में बातें की हैं। कहा जाता है कि अथर्ववेद में संन्यासियों के एक ग्रुप ने शरीर के विभिन्न तरह के आसनों के महत्व को समझाया वही आगे चलकर योग के रूप में विकसित हुआ। हमारे वेद और पुराण, तप, ध्यान और कठोर आचरण के माध्यम से शरीर, मन और आत्मा को अनुशासित रखने वाले ऋषि, मुनियों के ज्ञान से भरे पड़े हैं।
भारतीय दर्शन में योग का सबसे विस्तृत उल्लेख पतंजलि योगसूत्र में हुआ है। उनकी लेखनी अष्टांग योग का आधार बना और जैन धर्म की पांच प्रतिज्ञा और बौद्ध धर्म के योगाचार की जड़ें पतंजलि योगसूत्र में समाहित हैं। योगसूत्र में मानव चित्त को एकाग्र करके उसे सार्वभौमिक चेतना में लीन करने का विधान है। उनके अनुसार चित्त की चंचलता को रोककर मन को भटकने से रोकना ही योग है। आगे चलकर योग की अनेकों शाखाएं विकसित होती गई हैं। जिसमें यम, नियम एवं आसन और हठयोग, राजयोग, ज्ञानयोग और समाधि जैसी धाराएं भी शामिल हैं।
भारतीय संस्कृति की सबसे पुरानी विरासत के रूप में योग आधुनिक काल में और भी अधिक प्रासंगिक हो गई है। आज की भागदौड़ भरी जिंदगी में योग एकमात्र साधन है, जो मानव के तन-मन और आत्मा को शुद्ध कर प्रकृति को जीवंत बनाए रख सकता है। यहां पर स्वामी विवेकानंद के अनमोल शब्दों का उल्लेख करना उचित है, ”हम मानते हैं कि हर कोई दिव्य है, भगवान है। हर आत्मा एक सूर्य है जो अज्ञानता के बादलों से ढंका है, आत्मा और आत्मा के बीच अंतर बादलों की इन परतों की तीव्रता में अंतर की वजह से है।”
योग इसी अज्ञानता के बादलों को हटाने का माध्यम है। हजारों-हजार साल से हमारे पूर्वजों ने इस सांस्कृतिक धरोहर को विश्व कल्याण के लिए संजो कर रखा है। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी जी के प्रयासों से योग को उसी परम लक्ष्य तक पहुंचाने की अद्भुत कोशिश हो रही है।
