आइए आपको बताते हैं मारीशस में भारत की कहानी. ये बातें तकरीबन शुरुआती 1800 ई. की है जब ब्रिटिश पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश और पश्चिमी बिहार के लोगों को गन्ने की खेती के लिए मारीशस ले गए. इन्हें गिरमिटिया मजदूर कहा गया. गिरमिटिया लोग वहां गन्ने के खेती और चीनी फैक्ट्री में काम करने के साथ-साथ मारीशस की राजधानी पोर्ट लुइस के निर्माण का काम भी किया करते थे. गिरमिटिया के तहत उत्तर प्रदेश और बिहार के साथ-साथ महाराष्ट्र और तमिलनाडु के लोगो को देश से विदेश भेजा जा रहा था. कुछ भारतीय काम करने के बाद अपने देश आ गए तो कुछ वहीँ बस गए. भारतीय मारीशस को अपना देश बनाने में लग गए और अपनी संस्कृति और भाषा का प्रसार और विस्तार में जुट गए.
खाने में है देशी स्वाद

मारीशस की अपनी कोई अधिकारिक भाषा नहीं है, लेकिन इंग्लिश को अधिकारिक रूप में इस्तेमाल किया जाता है. मारीशस क्रियोल के बाद लोगो द्वारा सबसे ज्यादा बोले जाने वाली दुसरी बड़ी भाषा भोजपुरी है. फ्रेंच, भोजपुरी के बाद मारीशस में लोगों द्वारा बोली जाने वाली तीसरी सबसे बड़ी भाषा है. हिंदी, उर्दू, तमिल, मराठी भाषा भी बातचीत करने के लिए इस्तेमाल की जाती है. भारतीय संस्कृति की झलक यहाँ बख़ूबी देखी जाती है. गिरमिटिया लोगो द्वारा अपनी संस्कृति को यहाँ पर बहुत ही खूबसूरती से संजो कर रखा है. समय के साथ-साथ भारतीय संस्कृति का प्रसार और विस्तार होता चला रहा है. दिवाली, महाशिवरात्रि, उगादी और गणेश चतुर्थी के अवसर पर मारीशस में राष्ट्रीय अवकाश होता है.
आज मारीशस में दो संस्कृतियों का मेल आसानी से देखा जाता. भारतीय संस्कृति के प्रसार के लिए भारत ने वर्ष 1987 में इंदिरा गाँधी सेंटर फॉर इंडियन कल्चर की स्थापित किया. यह भारत और मारीशस के दोस्ती के रूप में भी देखा जाता है.
