असमंजस की स्थिति में पड़े अर्जुन को भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कर्मयोग का ज्ञान दिया. वह कर्मयोग गीता के नाम से पूरी दुनिया में प्रसिद्ध है. क्या आपको पता है कि वह कौन-सा स्थान है, जहां भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने गीता का ज्ञान दिया था ? बता दें कि वह स्थान कुरुक्षेत्र है. वर्तमान में यह हरियाणा राज्य के अंतर्गत आता है.
नारद पुराण में आया है कि ग्रहों, नक्षत्रों एवं तारागणों को कालगति से (आकाश से) नीचे गिर पड़ने का भय है, किन्तु वे, जो कुरुक्षेत्र में मरते हैं दोबारा पुर्नजन्म नहीं लेते. भगवद्गीता के प्रथम श्लोक में कुरुक्षेत्र को धर्मक्षेत्र कहा गया है. कुरुक्षेत्र नाम ‘कुरु के क्षेत्र’ का प्रतीक है. कुरुक्षेत्र का पौराणिक महत्त्व अधिक माना जाता है. इसका ऋग्वेद और यजुर्वेद में अनेक स्थानो पर वर्णन किया गया है. यहाँ की पौराणिक नदी सरस्वती का भी अत्यन्त महत्त्व है. इसके अतिरिक्त अनेक पुराणों, स्मृतियों और महर्षि वेदव्यास रचित महाभारत में इसका विस्तृत वर्णन किया गया हैं। विशेष तथ्य यह है कि कुरुक्षेत्र की पौराणिक सीमा 48 कोस की मानी गई है जिसमें कुरुक्षेत्र के अतिरिक्त कैथल, करनाल, पानीपत और जिंद का क्षेत्र सम्मिलित हैं.
कुरुक्षेत्र को सन्निहती या सन्निहत्या भी कहा गया है. वामन पुराण का कथन है कि सरस्वती कल्प वृक्ष से निकलती है और कई पर्वतों को छेदती हुई द्वैतवन में प्रवेश करती है. इस पुराण में मार्कण्डेय द्वारा की गयी सरस्वती की प्रशस्ति भी दी हुई है. ईरानी इतिहासकार अलबरुनी का कहना है कि सोमनाथ से एक बाण-निक्षेप की दूरी पर सरस्वती समुद्र में मिल जाती है. एक छोटी, किन्तु पुनीत नदी सरस्वती महीकण्ठ नाम की पहाड़ियों से निकलती है और पालनपुर के उत्तर-पूर्व होती हुई सिद्धपुर एवं पाटन को पार करती कई मीलों तक पृथ्वी के अन्दर बहती है और कच्छ के रन में प्रवेश कर जाती है.
आपको बता दें कि महाभारत का युद्ध आखिर कुरुक्षेत्र में ही क्यों हुआ था, किसी और जगह क्यों नहीं? कुरुक्षेत्र की धरती को महाभारत के युद्ध के लिए भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने ही चुना था, लेकिन उन्होंने कुरुक्षेत्र को ही महाभारत युद्ध के लिए क्यों चुना, इसके पीछे एक गहरा रहस्य छुपा है। शास्त्रों के मुताबिक, महाभारत का युद्ध जब तय हो गया तो उसके लिये जमीन तलाश की जाने लगी. भगवान श्रीकृष्ण इस युद्ध के जरिए धरती पर बढ़ते पाप को मिटाना चाहते थे और धर्म की स्थापना करना चाहते थे. कहते हैं कि भगवान श्रीकृष्ण को ये डर था कि भाई-भाइयों के, गुरु-शिष्यों के और सगे-संबंधियों के इस युद्ध में एक दूसरे को मरते देखकर कहीं कौरव और पांडव संधि न कर लें. इसलिए उन्होंने युद्ध के लिए ऐसी भूमि चुनने का फैसला किया, जहां क्रोध और द्वेष पर्याप्त मात्रा में हों. इसके लिए श्रीकृष्ण ने अपने दूतों को सभी दिशाओं में भेजा और उन्हें वहां की घटनाओं का जायजा लेने को कहा.
