मलिक मुहम्मद जायसी भक्तिकाल की निर्गुण प्रेमाश्रयी शाखा व मलिक वंश के कवि है। जायसी अत्यंत उच्चकोटि के सरल और उदार सूफ़ी महात्मा थे। हिन्दी के प्रसिद्ध सूफ़ी कवि, जिनके लिए केवल ‘जायसी’ शब्द का प्रयोग भी, उनके उपनाम की भाँति, किया जाता है। यह इस बात को भी सूचित करता है कि वे जायस नगर के निवासी थे। इस संबंध में उनका स्वयं भी कहना है,
जायस नगर मोर अस्थानू।
नगरक नाँव आदि उदयानू।
तहाँ देवस दस पहुने आएऊँ।
भा वैराग बहुत सुख पाएऊँ॥
इससे यह भी पता चलता है कि उस नगर का प्राचीन नाम ‘उदयान’ था, वहाँ वे एक ‘पहुने’ जैसे दस दिनों के लिए आये थे, अर्थात् उन्होंने अपना नश्वर जीवन प्रारंभ किया था अथवा जन्म लिया था और फिर वैराग्य हो जाने पर वहाँ उन्हें बहुत सुख मिला था। अवधी के बड़े कवियों में शुमार जायसी ‘पद्मावत’ की वजह से जब तक यह सृष्टि है, तब तक अमर हैं.
चित्तौड़ के राजा रत्नसेन और सिंहलद्वीप की राजकुमारी पद्मिनी से जुड़े इतिहास और किस्सों को जायसी ने ‘पद्मावत’ में एक सूत्र में पिरोया है. इसे सूफी काव्य भी माना जाता है. लेकिन इसे पढ़ कर ही जाना जा सकता है कि जायसी ने इसमें भारतीयता का कितना ख्याल रखा है. रत्नसेन, पद्मिनी और हीरामन तोते के सहारे जायसी ने इतिहास को कल्पना और कल्पना को इतिहास की तरह प्रामाणिक बना देने का बहुत रचनात्मक खेल ‘पद्मावत’ में खेला है.
नागमती चितउर पथ हेरा। पिउ जो गए पुनि कीन्ह न फेरा॥
नागर काहु नारि बस परा। तेइ मोर पिउ मोसौं हरा॥
सुआ काल होइ लेइगा पीऊ। पिउ नहिं जात, जात बरु जीऊ॥
भएउ नरायन बाबंन करा। राज करत राजा बलि छरा॥
करन पास लीन्हेउ कै छंदू। बिप्र रूप धारि झिलमिल इंदू॥
मानत भोग गोपिचंद भोगी। लेइ अपसवा जलंधार जोगी॥
लेइगा कृस्नहि गरुड़ अलोपी। कठिन बिछोह, जियहिं किमि गोपी?
सारस जोरी कौन हरि, मारि बियाधा लीन्ह?
झुरि झुरि पींजर हौं भई, बिरह काल मोहि दीन्ह॥1॥
अखरावट जायसी कृत एक सिद्धांत प्रधान ग्रंथ है। इस काव्य में कुल ५४ दोहे ५४ सोरठे और ३१७ अर्द्धलिया हैं। इसमें दोहा, चौपाई और सोरठा छंदों का प्रयोग हुआ है। एक दोहा पुनः एक सोरठा और पुनः ७ अर्द्धलियों के क्रम का निर्वाह अंत तक किया गया है। अखरावट में मूलतः चेला गुरु संवाद को स्थान दिया गया है। अखरावट के विषय में जायसी ने इसके काल का वर्णन कहीं नहीं किया है। सैय्यद कल्ब मुस्तफा के अनुसार यह जायसी की अंतिम रचना है। इससे यह स्पष्ट होता है कि अखरावट पद्मावत के बाद लिखी गई होगी, क्योंकि जायसी के अंतिम दिनों में उनकी भाषा ज्यादा सुदृढ़ एवं सुव्यवस्थित हो गई थी, इस रचना की भाषा ज्यादा व्यवस्थित है। इसी में जायसी ने अपनी वैयक्तिक भावनाओं का स्पष्टीकरण किया है। इससे भी यही साबित होता है, क्योंकि कवि प्रायः अपनी व्यक्तित्व भावनाओं स्पष्टीकरण अंतिम में ही करता है।
मनेर शरीफ से प्राप्त पद्मावत के साथ अखरखट की कई हस्तलिखित प्रतियों में इसका रचना काल दिया है। “अखरावट’ की हस्तलिखित प्रति पुष्पिका में जुम्मा ८ जुल्काद ९११ हिजरी का उल्लेख मिलता है। इससे अखरावट का रचनाकाल ९११ हिजरी या उसके आस पास प्रमाणित होता है।
अखरावट के आरंभ में जायसी ने इस्लामिक धर्मग्रंथों और विश्वासों के आधार पर आधारित सृष्टि के उद्भव तथा विकास की कथा लिखी है। उनके इस कथा के अनुसार सृष्टि के आदि में महाशुन्य था, उसी शुन्य से ईश्वर ने सृष्टि की रचना की गई हे। उस समय गगन, धरती, सूर्य, चंद्र जैसी कोई भी चीज मौजूद नहीं थी। ऐसे शुन्य अंधकार में सबसे पहले पैगम्बर मुहम्मद की ज्योति उत्पन्न की —
गगन हुता नहिं महि दुती, हुते चंद्र नहिं सूर
ऐसइ अंधकूप महं स्पत मुहम्मद नूर।।
कुरान शरीफ एवं इस्लामी रवायतों में यह कहा जाता है कि जब कुछ नहीं था, तो केवल अल्लाह था। प्रत्येक जगह घोर अंधकार था। भारतीय साहित्य में भी इस संसार की कल्पना “अश्वत्थ’ रुप में की गई है।
सातवां सोम कपार महं कहा जो दसवं दुवार।
जो वह पवंकिंर उधारै, सो बड़ सिद्ध अपार।।
इस पंक्तियों में जायसी ने मनुष्य शरीर के परे, गुद्येन्द्रिय, नाभि, स्तन, कंठ, भौंहों के बीच के स्थान और कपाल प्रदेशों में क्रमशः शनि, वृहस्पिति, मंगल, आदित्य, शुक्र, बुध और सोम की स्थिति का निरोपण किया है। ब्रह्म अपने व्यापक रुप में मानव देह में भी समाया हुआ है —
माथ सरग घर धरती भयऊ।
मिलि तिन्ह जग दूसर होई गयऊ।।
माटी मांसु रकत या नीरु।
नसे नदी, हिय समुद्र गंभीरु।।
मलिक मुहम्मद जायसी के कथनानुसार ब्रह्मा से ही यह समस्त सृष्टि आपूर्ति की गयी है। उन्होंने आगे फरमाया कि जीव बीज रुप में ब्रह्मा में ही था, इसी से अठारह सहस्र जीवयोगियों की उत्पत्ति हुई है –
वै सब किछु करता किछु नाहीं।
जैसे चलै मेघ परिछाही।।
परगट गुपुत विचारि सो बूझा।
सो तजि दूसर और न सूफा।।
जीव पहले ईश्वर में अभिन्न था। बाद में उसका बिछोह हो गया। ईश्वर का कुछ अंश घट- घट में समाया है –
सोई अंस छटे घट मेला।
जो सोइ बरन- बरन होइ खेला।।
जायसी बड़ी तत्परता से कहते हैं कि संपूर्ण जगत ईश्वर की ही प्रभुता का विकास है। कवि कहता है कि मनुष्य पिंड के भीतर ही ब्रह्मा और समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड है, जब अपने भीतर ही ढूँढ़ा तो वह उसी अनंत सत्ता में विलीन हो गया —
बुंदहिं समुद्र समान, यह अचरज कासों कहों।
जो हेरा सो हेरान, मुहमद आपुहि आप महं।।
इससे आगे कवि कहता है कि “जैसे दूध में घी और समुद्र में पोती की स्थिति है, वही
स्थिति वह परम ज्योति की है, जो जगत भीतर- भीतर भासित हो रही है। कवि कहता है कि वस्तुतः एक ही ब्रह्म के चित अचित् दो पक्ष हुए, दोनों पक्षों के भीतर तेरी अलग सत्ता कहाँ से आई। आज के सामाजिक परिदृश्य में उनका यह प्रश्न अधिक उचित है —
एक हि ते हुए होइ, दुइ सौ राज न चलि सके।
