माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त बंगला भाषा के प्रसिद्ध कवि, साहित्यकार और नाटककार थे। उनका हिन्दू नाम मधुसूदन दत्त था, किंतु ईसाई धर्म स्वीकार कर लेने और एक ईसाई युवती से विवाह के बाद उनका नाम माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त हो गया। माइकल मधुसूदन बंगाल में अपनी पीढ़ी के उन युवकों के प्रतिनिधि थे, जो तत्कालीन हिन्दू समाज के राजनीतिक और सांस्कृतिक जीवन से क्षुब्ध थे। वे अतिशय भावुक व्यक्ति थे। यह भावुकता उनकी आरंभ की अंग्रेजी रचनाओं तथा बाद की बंगला रचनाओं में भी व्याप्त हुई।
माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त ने मद्रास में कुछ पत्रों के सम्पादकीय विभागों में भी काम किया। इनकी पहली कविता अंग्रेज़ी भाषा में 1849 ई. प्रकाशित हुई। पर इन्हें वास्तविक प्रतिष्ठा बंगला भाषा की रचनाओं से ही मिल सकी। एक अंग्रेज़ी नाटक का बंगला में अनुवाद करते समय मधुसूदन दत्त को मूल बंगला भाषा में एक अच्छा नाटक लिखने की प्रेरणा हुई। उनका पहला बंगला नाटक था- “शार्मिष्ठा”। इसके प्रकाशन के साथ ही वे बंगला के साहित्यकार हो गए। उनके दो अन्य नाटक थे- ‘पद्मावती’ और ‘कृष्ण कुमारी’। उनके लिखे दो परिहास नाटक भी बहुत प्रसिद्ध हुए- ‘एकेई कि बले सभ्यता’ और ‘बूड़ो शालिकेर घोड़े रो’। माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त मुख्य रूप से कवि थे। नाटकों की सफलता के बाद वे काव्य रचना की ओर भी प्रवृत्त हुए। उनकी प्रमुख काव्य कृतियाँ हैं-

मेघनाद वध
व्रजांगना
वीरांगना
बता दें कि बंगला साहित्य के पुनर्जागरण के कवि और नाटककार माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त का जन्म 25 जनवरी, 1824 ई. में जैसोर के सागरबांड़ी नामक स्थान पर हुआ था। यह स्थान अब बंगला देश में है। उनके पिता का नाम राजनारायण दत्त और माँ का नाम जाह्नवी देवी था। इनके पिता अपने समय के प्रख्यात वकील थे। मधुसूदन जी की शिक्षा कोलकाता (भूतपूर्व कलकत्ता) के ‘हिन्दू कॉलेज’ से आंरभ हुई। उनकी प्रतिभा आंरभ से ही प्रकट होने लगी थी। स्कूल के दिनों मे ही अंग्रेज़ी में महिलाओं की शिक्षा के विषय पर उन्होंने निबंध लिखकर स्वर्ण पदक प्राप्त किया था।
एक ईसाई युवती से प्रेम के कारण 3 फ़रवरी, 1843 को मधुसूदन दत्त ने ईसाई धर्म स्वीकर कर विवाह कर लिया। अब उनका नाम माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त हो गया। ‘हिन्दू कॉलेज’ से उन्होंने अपनी शिक्षा पूरी की और वहीं पर ग्रीक लैटिन और संस्कृत भाषाओं का अध्ययन किया। सन 1848 में वे मद्रास (वर्तमान चेन्नई) चले गए और एक अनाथालय में अंग्रेज़ी के अध्यापक बन गए। मधुसूदन दत्त का कुछ समय बाद अपनी पत्नी से तलाक हो गया था, तब उन्होंने दूसरा विवाह किया।
सन 1862 ई. में माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त इंग्लैंड चले गए। वहाँ आर्थिक समस्याएँ उत्पन्न होने पर ईश्वरचन्द्र विद्यासागर ने उनके लिए आठ हज़ार रुपये भेजे थे। ये रुपये मधुसूदन जी ने बाद में उन्हें लौटाए। इंग्लैंड से वकालत की डिग्री लेकर उन्होंने सन 1867 ई. में ‘कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट’ में वकालत आरम्भ की। अब एक बैरिस्टर की हैसियत से उन्होंने पर्याप्त धन कमाया। किन्तु राजसी रहन-सहन के कारण उनके ऊपर काफ़ी ऋण हो गया था। ऐसी स्थिति में उन्हें कोलकाता छोड़कर हुगली की उत्तरपाड़ा लाइब्रेरी में जाकर रहना पड़ा।
हुगली में ही लम्बी बीमारी की अवस्था में 29 जून, 1873 ई. को माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त का देहांत हो गया। उनकी दूसरी पत्नी भी 26 जून को चल बसी थी। मधुसूदन जी भारत की प्रचीन संस्कृति के बड़े प्रशंसक, साथ ही रूढ़िवादी विचारों के विरोधी थे। उन्होंने अपनी रचनाओं में प्राचीन प्रसंगों को नए रूप में व्याख्यायित किया था।
19वीं शती का उत्तरार्ध बँगला साहित्य में प्राय: मधुसूदन-बंकिम युग कहा जाता है। माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त बंगाल में अपनी पीढ़ी के उन युवकों के प्रतिनिधि थे, जो तत्कालीन हिंदू समाज के राजनीतिक और सांस्कृतिक जीवन से क्षुब्ध थे और जो पश्चिम की चकाचौंधपूर्ण जीवन पद्धति में आत्मभिव्यक्ति और आत्मविकास की संभावनाएँ देखते थे। माइकल अतिशय भावुक थे। यह भावुकता उनकी आरंभ की अंग्रेजी रचनाओं तथा बाद की बँगला रचनाओं में व्याप्त है। बँगला रचनाओं को भाषा, भाव और शैली की दृष्टि से अधिक समृद्धि प्रदान करने के लिये उन्होनें अँगरेजी के साथ-साथ अनेक यूरोपीय भाषाओं का गहन अध्ययन किया। संस्कृत तथा तेलुगु पर भी उनका अच्छा अधिकार था.
