ओशो शब्द की मूल उत्पत्ति के सम्बन्ध में कई धारणायें हैं. एक मान्यता के अनुसार, खुद ओशो कहते है कि ओशो शब्द कवि विलयम जेम्स की एक कविता ‘ओशनिक एक्सपीरियंस’ के शब्द ‘ओशनिक’ से लिया गया है, जिसका अर्थ है ‘सागर में विलीन हो जाना. शब्द ‘ओशनिक’ अनुभव का वर्णन करता है, वे कहते हैं, लेकिन अनुभवकर्ता के बारे में क्या? इसके लिए हम ‘ओशो’ शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं. अर्थात, ओशो मतलब- ‘सागर से एक हो जाने का अनुभव करने वाला’. 1960 के दशक में वे ‘आचार्य रजनीश’ के नाम से एवं 1970 -80 के दशक में भगवान श्री रजनीश नाम से और 1989 के समय से ओशो के नाम से जाने गये. वे एक आध्यात्मिक गुरु थे, तथा भारत व विदेशों में जाकर उन्होने प्रवचन दिये.
अपने संपूर्ण जीवनकाल में आचार्य रजनीश को एक विवादास्पद रहस्यदर्शी, गुरु और आध्यात्मिक शिक्षक के रूप में देखा गया. वे धार्मिक रूढ़िवादिता के बहुत कठोर आलोचक थे, जिसकी वजह से वह बहुत ही जल्दी विवादित हो गए और ताउम्र विवादित ही रहे. 11 दिसंबर, 1931 को मध्य प्रदेश के कुचवाड़ा में उनका जन्म हुआ था. जन्म के वक्त उनका नाम चंद्रमोहन जैन था. बचपन से ही उन्हें दर्शन में रुचि पैदा हो गई. ऐसा उन्होंने अपनी किताब ‘ग्लिप्सेंस ऑफड माई गोल्डन चाइल्डहुड’ में लिखा है. उन्होंने अपनी पढ़ाई जबलपुर में पूरी की और बाद में वो जबलपुर यूनिवर्सिटी में लेक्चरर के तौर पर काम करने लगे. उन्होंने अलग-अलग धर्म और विचारधारा पर देश भर में प्रवचन देना शुरू किया. प्रवचन के साथ ध्यान शिविर भी आयोजित करना शुरू कर दिया. शुरुआती दौर में उन्हें आचार्य रजनीश के तौर पर जाना जाता था. नौकरी छोड़ने के बाद उन्होंने नवसंन्यास आंदोलन की शुरुआत की. इसके बाद उन्होंने खुद को ओशो कहना शुरू कर दिया.
वर्ष 1957 में संस्कृत के लेक्चरर के तौर पर रजनीश ने रायपुर विश्वविद्यालय जॉइन किया, लेकिन उनके गैर परंपरागत धारणाओं और जीवनयापन करने के तरीके को छात्रों के नैतिक आचरण के लिए घातक समझते हुए विश्वविद्यालय के कुलपति ने उनका ट्रांसफर कर दिया. अगले ही वर्ष वे दर्शनशास्त्र के लेक्चरर के रूप में जबलपुर यूनिवर्सिटी में शामिल हुए. इस दौरान भारत के कोने-कोने में जाकर उन्होंने गांधीवाद और समाजवाद पर भाषण दिया, अब तक वह आचार्य रजनीश के नाम से अपनी पहचान स्थापित कर चुके थे. वे दर्शनशास्त्र के अध्यापक थे. उनके द्वारा समाजवाद, महात्मा गाँधी की विचारधारा तथा संस्थागत धर्म पर की गई अलोचनाओं ने उन्हें विवादास्पद बना दिया. वे मानव कामुकता के प्रति स्वतंत्र दृष्टिकोण के भी हिमायती थे जिसकी वजह से उन्हें कई भारतीय और फिर विदेशी पत्रिकाओ में “सेक्स गुरु” के नाम से भी संबोधित किया गया.
कोई ओशो को संत-सतगुरू के नाम से जानता है तो कोई भगवान के नाम से. किसी के लिए ओशो महज एक दार्शनिक हैं तो किसी के लिए विचारक. किसी के लिए ओशो शक्ति हैं तो किसी के लिए व्यक्ति. कोई इन्हें संबुद्ध रहस्यदर्शी के नाम से संबोधित करता है तो किसी की नजर में ओशो एक ‘सेक्स गुरु’ का नाम है. स्वीकार और इंकार के बीच प्रेम और घृणा के बीच ओशो खूब उभरे हैं. ओशो कोई पारंपरिक संतों की तरह कोई रामायण या महाभारत आदि का पाठ नहीं कर रहे थे, न ही व्रत-पूजा या धार्मिक कर्मकांड करवाते थे. वह स्वर्ग-नर्क एवं अन्य अंधविश्वासों से परे उन विषयों पर बोल रहे थे जिन पर इससे पहले किसी ने नहीं बोला था. ओशो के विषय बिल्कुल अलग थे. ऐसा ही एक विषय था- सम्भोग से समाधि की ओर जो आज भी विवाद का विषय बना हुआ है.
