रहीम जी का व्यक्तित्व बहुत प्रभावशाली था. यह मुसलमान होकर भी कृष्ण भक्त थे. इन्होंने खुद को “रहिमन” कहकर भी सम्बोधित किया है. इनके काव्य में नीति, भक्ति, प्रेम और श्रृंगार का सुन्दर समावेश मिलता है. भाषा को सरल, सरस व मधुर बनाने के लिए इन्होंने तदभव शब्दों का अधिक प्रयोग किया है.
रहीम जी ने अपने अनुभवों को अति सरल व सहजता से जिस शैली में अभिव्यक्त किया है वह वास्तव में अदभुत है. उनकी कविताओं, छंदों, दोहों में पूर्वी अवधी, ब्रज भाषा तथा खड़ी बोली का प्रयोग हुआ है. पर मुख्य रूप से ब्रज भाषा का ही प्रयोग हुआ है. अब्दुर्रहीम ‘खानखाना अकबर के अभिभावक बैरम खाँ के पुत्र थे. बैरम खाँ की मृत्यु के पश्चात अकबर ने अपनी देखरेख में इनका लालन-पालन किया. अकबर के शासन काल में इन्होंने ‘खानखाना की सर्वोच्च पदवी प्राप्त की तथा उसके महामंत्री बने, किन्तु जहाँगीर से इनकी नहीं पटी. उसने क्रुध्द होकर इन्हें कैद में डाल दिया तथा इनकी समस्त संपत्ति छीन ली. अंत में क्षमा माँगने पर इन्हें वापस ‘खानखाना बना दिया गया, किन्तु शीघ्र ही इनकी मृत्यु हो गई. रहीम बडे उदार और दानी थे. ये केशव, मंडन, गंग आदि अनेक कवियों के आश्रयदाता थे. ये कवि तथा काव्य-रसिक थे. एक बार इनका भृत्य विवाह के पश्चात आया तो उसने नवोढा पत्नी का लिखा एक बरवै इन्हें दिया-
प्रेम प्रीति को बिरवा चल्यौ लगाय।
सींचन की सुधि लीजो मुरझि न जाय॥
इस पर प्रसन्न होकर रहीम ने भृत्य को लंबी छुट्टी दे दी तथा इस बरवै को अपनी पुस्तक में स्थान दिया. इन्हें अरबी, फारसी, तुर्की, संस्कृत और हिंदी का अच्छा ज्ञान था। काव्य की दृष्टि से इनके बरवै अद्वितीय हैं. नीति काव्य में भी रहीम का स्थान अक्षुण्ण है. ‘शृंगार-सोरठ, ‘रास पंचाध्यायी, ‘रहीम-रत्नावली और ‘बरवै नायिका भेद इनके प्रसिध्द ग्रंथ हैं.
खैर खून खाँसी खुसी, बैर प्रीति मद पान।
रहिमन दाबे ना दबै, जानत सकल जहान॥
जाल परे जल जात बहि, तजि मीनन को मोह।
रहिमन मछरी नीर को, तऊ न छाँडत छोह॥
धनि रहीम जल पंक को, लघु जिय पियत अघाई।
उदधि बडाई कौन है, जगत पियासो जाइ॥
छिमा बडन को चाहिए, छोटन को उतपात।
का रहीम हरि को घटयो, जो भृगु मारी लात॥
मान सहित विष खाय कै, सम्भु भये जगदीस।
बिना मान अमृत पिये, राहु कटायो सीस॥
रहिमन धागा प्रेम का, मत तोडो चटकाय।
टूटे से फिर ना जुरै, जुरे गाँठ परि जाय।
रहिमन वे नर मरि चुके, जे कहुँ माँगन जाहिं।
उनते पहलेवे मुये, जिन मुख निकसत नाहिं॥
वे रहीम नर धन्य हैं, पर उपकारी अंग।
बाँटनवारे के लगे, ज्यों मेहंदी को रंग॥
धूर धरत नित शीश पर, कहु रहीम किहिं काज।
जिहि रज मुनि पतनी तरी, सो ढूँढत गजराज॥
कमला थिर न रहीम कहि, यह जानत सब कोय।
पुरुष पुरातन की बधू, क्यों न चंचला होय॥
तरुवर फल नहिं खात हैं, सरवर पियहिं न पान।
कहि रहीम पर काज हित, सम्पति सुचहिं सुजान॥
रहिमन पानी राखिये, बिन पानी सब सून।
पानी गए न ऊबरै, मोती, मानुष, चून॥
देव हँसैं सब आपसु में, बिधि के परपंच न जाहिं निहारे।
बेटा भयो बसुदेव के धाम, औ दुंदुभी बाजत नंद के द्वारे॥
रहीम ने काव्य में रामायण, महाभारत, पुराण तथा गीता जैसे ग्रंथों के कथानकों को उदाहरण के लिए चुना है और लौकिक जीवन व्यवहार पक्ष को उसके द्वारा समझाने का प्रयत्न किया है, जो भारतीय सांस्कृति की वर झलक को पेश करता है.

रहीम ने अवधी और ब्रजभाषा दोनों में ही कविता की है जो सरल, स्वाभाविक और प्रवाहपूर्ण है.

उनके काव्य में शृंगार, शांत तथा हास्य रस मिलते हैं. दोहा, सोरठा, बरवै, कवित्त और सवैया उनके प्रिय छंद हैं.
