“अगर कोई देश भ्रष्टाचार मुक्त है और सभी तरह से सुंदर राष्ट्र बन गया है, तो मुझे दृढ़ता से लगता है कि तीन प्रमुख सामाजिक सदस्य हैं जिनका इसमें योगदान हो सकता है. वे पिता, माता और शिक्षक हैं।”
भारत में शिक्षकों की पूजा करने की परंपरा काफी लंबी है। वैदिक काल में छात्रों को शिक्षक के घर पर ही पढ़ाया जाता था, जहां खाली समय में छात्र, शिक्षकों की सेवा करते थे। इसे “गुरुकुल” कहा जाता था, जो सैद्धांतिक रूप से निःशुल्क शिक्षा व्यवस्था थी, हालांकि शिष्यों द्वारा शिक्षकों को गुरुदक्षिणा (नकदी, दया और शपद आदि के रूप में सांकेतिक शुल्क) दी जाती थी। इस गुरुकुल व्यवस्था के अंतर्गत छात्रों के चरित्र निर्माण को बेहतर तरीके से ढालने पर जोर दिया जाता था, ताकि छात्रों को बौद्धिक रूप से अधिक से अधिक सशक्त एवं मजबूत बनाया जा सके। प्राचीन भारत में एक छात्र को उसके शिक्षक की वंशावली से पहचान लिया जाता था। इसने गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा की अवधारणा को जन्म दिया, जिसे गुरु-शिष्य संबंधों के रूप में भी पहचाना जाता है। वहीं दूसरी ओर, बाद की शताब्दियों में शिक्षक अपने शिष्यों के घरों में रहा करते थे। उदाहरणस्वरूप महाभारत में गुरु द्रोणाचार्य कौरवों के साथ उनके घर में रहते थे।
आगामी शताब्दियों में आवासीय विश्वविद्यालयों का उदय हुआ, जिनको बौद्ध मठों की तर्ज पर बनाया गया था। इससे मतलब था कि शिक्षक और छात्र पूर्ण रूप से तटस्थ तरीके से मिलते थे। उत्तर पश्चिम भारत में तक्षशिला विश्वविद्यालय (वर्तमान में पाकिस्तान में स्थित) दुनिया का पहला विश्वविद्यालय था। भारत में तक्षशिला, नालंदा, विक्रमशिला, ओदांतपुरी, वल्लभी, पुष्पागिरी आदि कई विश्वविद्यालय थे। मगर मध्यकालीन युग में विदेशी आक्रमणकारियों द्वारा इनमें से कई विश्वविद्यालयों के विनाश से शिक्षा को बड़ा नुकसान पहुंचा।
19 शताब्दी की शुरुआत में भारत में आधुनिक शिक्षा की शुरुआत के साथ ही शिक्षक फिर से आगे आए। हिन्दू कॉलेज (1817 में स्थापित), वर्तमान में कोलकाता में प्रेसिडेंसी विश्वविद्यालय आधुनिक शिक्षा व्यवस्था के रूप में उच्च शिक्षण का पहला संस्थान था। इस संस्थान ने आधुनिक शिक्षा व्यववस्था में राष्ट्रीय चर्चा की शुरुआत करने में अहम भूमिका अदा की। इस विचार को प्रेरित करने वाले नौजवान शिक्षक हैनरी लुइस विविआन डेरोजिओ (1809-1831), एक एंग्लो-भारतीय शिक्षक थे, जो केवल 23 वर्ष तक जीवित रहे। उन्होंने समकालीन यूरोप के तर्कसंगतता और मानवतावाद के विचार को अपने छात्रों की सोच में शामिल किया।
कवि रबिन्द्र नाथ टैगोर (1861-1941) और राजनीतिज्ञ मदन मोहन मालवीय (1861-1945) ने देश में शिक्षाविदों के रूप में अहम योगदान दिया। टैगोर ने विश्व भारतीय विश्वविद्यालय और मालवीय ने बनारस हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय के माध्यम से राष्ट्रीय शिक्षा की दो विभिन्न धाराओं का प्रतिनिधित्व किया। उन्होंने प्रतिष्ठित शिक्षकों के रूप में ख्याति प्राप्त की।
05 सितंबर का दिन देश के दूसरे राष्ट्रपति डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन (1888-1975) के सम्मान में शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इसी दिन डॉ. राधाकृष्णन का जन्म हुआ था। शिक्षक दिवस को कब अपनाया गया? राष्ट्रपति पद ग्रहण करने के कुछ हफ्तों के भीतर ही 5 सितंबर 1962 को डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन के 75वें जन्मदिवस के उपलक्ष्य में इस दिन को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाना आरंभ किया गया। भारतीय दर्शन और एक प्रोफेसर के रूप में उनकी व्यापक प्रतिष्ठा के फलस्वरूप उन्हें अतुल्य योगदान के लिए अपने देश में ही नहीं, बल्कि विदेशों में भी सम्मानित किया गया। उनके लिए कामना करने वालों में डॉ. एलबर्ट स्विजर, डायज टी सुजुकी, होरेस एलेक्जेंडर, आर्नोल्ड जे. टोयेनबी, किंग्स्ले मार्टिन, और चार्ल्स ए. मूरी आदि अंतरराष्ट्रीय शख्सियत शामिल हैं। वहीं दूसरे ओर घरेलू स्तर पर देश के विभिन्न नेताओं ने अपनी सोच, विचार, पार्टी आदि से ऊपर उठकर शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में उनके योगदान की सराहना की। मगर, उपर्युक्त सभी बातों को ध्यान में रखते हुए, पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री श्री जवाहर लाल नेहरू ने कहा था कि “वह एक महान शिक्षक हैं, जिनसे हमने काफी कुछ सीखा है, और लगातार उनके विचार एवं दृष्टिकोण से सीखते रहेंगे।”
शिक्षा के बढ़ते व्यासायीकरण और प्रोफेशनलिज्म के साथ, शिक्षा की मूल्य प्रणाली खतरे में है। जब शिक्षा को वस्तु के रूप में देखा जाता है तो शिक्षक की भूमिका केवल सेवा प्रदाता के रूप में सीमित हो जाती है। दूरस्थ और ऑनलाइन शिक्षा ने शिक्षक को केवल सामग्री प्रदाता बना दिया है। केवल प्रोफेशनल और व्यावसायिक उपलब्धियों को ही जीवन में सफलता का मानदंड नहीं माना जा सकता। न ही ये उपलब्धियां खुशहाल समाज की दिशा में देश एवं लोगों को आगे बढ़ा सकती हैं। आदर्शवाद और संवेदनशीलता की शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में अहम भूमिका है। छात्रों में इन गुणों को पैदा करने और उन्हें प्रोत्साहित करने में शिक्षक को सबसे बेहतर स्थान प्राप्त है। हम सभी अपने शिक्षकों के लिए कुछ अच्छा करने की शपथ लेते हैं। अक्सर यह हम सभी के जीवन का एक श्रेष्ठ हिस्सा होता है।
