26 जनवरी 1950 को जब देश को पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता मिली थी, उसी दिन सारनाथ संग्रहालय में रखे सिंह-शीर्ष को राष्ट्रीय प्रतीक के रूप में लिया गया. इसमें 4 सिंह पीठ से पीठ मिलाए हुए एक गोलाकार अबेकस पर बनाये गए है और यह अबेकस एक अधोमुख-कमलाकृति पर उद्धृत है. नीचे देवनागरी लिपि में ‘सत्यमेव-जयते’ लिखा हुआ है जिसका शाब्दिक अर्थ है- ‘सत्य की ही विजय होती है.’
हमारे राष्ट्रीय प्रतीक पर दिखाए गए अबेकस के नीचे देवनागरी लिपि में लिखा गया वाक्यांश ‘सत्यमेव- जयते’ मुंडक-उपनिषद से लिया गया है. सत्यमेव -जयते इस उपनिषद- सत्यम ईवा जययत नश्त्रम से एक लंबी कविता का उद्घाटन वाक्यांश है, सत्यना पंथा विटाटो देवयनह यनर्क्रामंती ऋशो हाय अपतकमा यात्रा तप सत्य्या परम निदानम. जिसका अर्थ है ‘सच्चाई अकेले जीतती है, असत्य नहीं. सच्चाई से देवताओं की ओर बढ़ने वाले मार्ग को बाहर रखा जाता है जिसके द्वारा ऋषि अपनी इच्छाओं को पूरा करते हैं, जहां सत्य का सर्वोच्च निवास है’. चूंकि, उपरोक्त आदर्श वाक्य राष्ट्र प्रतीक में शामिल है, इसका उपयोग निजी रूप से नहीं किया जा सकता है. यह केवल अशोक स्तंभ शिखा के नीचे दिखाई दे सकता है जहां स्वयं को उपयोग करने की अनुमति है.
