बारिश प्रकृति में नवजीवन भर देती है। हरीतिमा की फैली चादर और ऊपर से पड़ती फुहार मानव तन-मन को हुलसाती है. उसमें रस का संचार करती है. प्रेम अपने पात्र से छलकने लगता है. संवेदनशील मन में नए विचार और शब्द आते हैं. सावन मास आते ही झूले डाले जाने की परम्परा द्वापर युग से चली आ रही है. जब श्रीकृष्ण ब्रज की गोपियों के साथ जी भर कर झूला झूलते थे और सावन की ठंडी फुहारों का आनन्द लेते थे. सावन मास आते ही गांव-गांव में सैरे गाए जाने लगते हैं. इसे मूलतः सावन गीत कहा जा सकता है. जिस प्रकार श्रीकृष्ण और गोपियों के प्रेमरस से भीगे गीत सावन की ऋतु को ऊर्जा प्रदान करते हैं, ठीक उसी तरह सैरे भी प्रेमरस से भीगे हुए गीत होते हैं.
सावन मास में ही राछरे गीत गाए जाते हैं। राछरे गीत मुख्य रूप से स्त्रियां गाती हैं किन्तु कभी-कभी पुरुष भी इसे गाते हैं. इन गीतों में विवाहिताओं की उन स्मृतियों का विवरण होता है जो उनके मायके से जुड़ी होती हैं. इन गीतों में वे अपने माता-पिता, भाई-बहन, सखी-सहेली आदि को याद करती हैं. ये गीत चक्की चलाते हुए, झूला झूलते हुए और अन्य घरेलू काम करते हुए गाए जाते हैं. जबकि कजरियां गीत श्रावण शुक्ल नवमीं को कजरियां बोने से शुरू होते हैं.
कजरिया बोने के समय कजरिया गीत गाए जाते हैं. कभी-कभी राछरे गीत भी कजरियों के साथ गाए जाते हैं. कजरियों की राछरों में आल्हा-ऊदल के युद्धों का वातावरण भी मिलता है. जैसे एक गीत में माँ अपनी बहन और बेटी को कजरिया सिराने के लिए बुला रही है किन्तु साथ में यह भी चेतावनी दे रही है कि वह किसी दुश्मन के हाथ न पड़ जाए अन्यथा कुल की प्रतिष्ठा धूल में मिल जाएगी.

आल्हा जोश और मस्ती का काव्य है. सावन के बादलों के घिरते ही आल्हा काव्य की अनेक पंक्तियां वातावरण में सरसता घोलने लगती हैं. यह मूलतः वीररस का काव्य है किन्तु इसमें श्रंृगार रस के विभन्न रूपों का भी रसास्वादन होता है. आल्हा काव्य में जगनिक ने बड़े ही सुन्दर ढंग से सावन के बादलों से बरसने का आग्रह किया है. नवविवाहिता रानी कुसुमा बादलों से प्रार्थना करती है कि वे उसके महलों पर इतना बरसें कि उसका प्रिय उसे छोड़ कर न जा सके और उसकी आंखों के सामने बना रहे.

मेंहदी के रंग और वर्षा की बूंदों का संग बेहद आकर्षित करते रहे हैं. सावन आते ही मेंहदी की झाड़ियों के पत्ते चटख, गहरे हरे रंग में अपनी छटा बिखेरने लगते हैं. यही पत्ते जब पिसने के बाद हथेलियों पर लगाए जाते हें तो सुन्दर लाल रंग की छाप छोड़ जाते हैं. सावन का महीना हथेलियों पर मेंहदी रचाने का आमन्त्रण देने लगता है. आजकल बनी-बनाई मेंहदी भी बाजार में उपलब्ध हो जाती है जिससे मेंहदी लगाने का चाव परम्परागत रूप से प्रवाहमान है.
सावन का महीना आते ही नव विवाहित लड़कियां अपने मायके जाने की बाट जोहने लगती हैं , रह-रह कर उन्हे हर अपना बचपन याद आने लगता है और माँ के घर की याद आने लगती है.
