हालांकि मजदूरों को बाहर निकालने में इन रैट होल माइनर्स का बहुत बड़ा उपयोग है। लेकिन यह पूरी तरह से गैरकानूनी घोषित है। आपको बता दें कि रैट होल माइनिंग को पर्यावरण संस्थान एनजीटी(NGT) ने प्रतिबंध लगा रखा है। रैट होल माइनिंग में लोगों का एक छोटा समूह शामिल होता है। ये छोटे -छोटे समूहों में काम करते हैं और खनिज के भंडार तक पहुंचने के लिए खूदाई करते हैं। खनन के इस असुरक्षित तरीकों को करने वालो की जिंदगी हालांकि गरीबी में ही बीतती है।
खनन माफिया आम तौर पर इन रैट होल माइनर्स को गैरकानूनी तौर खनन के लिए इस्तेमाल करता रहा है। मेघालय आदि पूर्वोत्तर के क्षेत्र आय दिन इस गैरकानूनी खनन के तरीकों के नकारात्मक प्रभाव को लेकर खबरों में रहता है। भारत में यह तरीका उन जगहों पर काफी आम प्रचलन में जहां खनिज का खनन कम गहराइयों पर किए जाते हैं। भारत के पूर्वोत्तर हिस्से में कोयला खनन एक बहुत बड़ी समस्या है। वहां के स्थानीय निवासी जमीन के अंदर गड्ढा खोदते है और इसके बाद माइनर रस्सी या बांस की मदद से सुरंग के अंदर से खनिज को बाहर निकालते हैं। इस पूरे प्रक्रिया को हाथ से अंजाम दिया जाता है। कई बार तो जहरीली गैस के कारण रैट माइनर्स की अंदर ही मौत हो जाती है क्योंकि निकलने का रास्ता बहुत ही संकीर्ण होता है। इस कारण सरकार ने इसे पूरी तरह से प्रतिबंधित कर रखा है। हालांकि रैट माइनिंग की इस कला को बड़े बुजुर्ग अपने छोटों को सिखाते हैं। क्योंकि इसका कोई भी व्यवहारिक प्रशिक्षण नहीं होता है।
