इनके पिता अध्यापक थे और इसीलिए मुल्ला दो प्याजा की रुचि भी किताबों में ज्यादा थी। मुल्ला दो प्याजा का सपना था की वो अकबर के दरबार में रहें और इसके लिए उन्होने काफी संघर्ष भी किया और तिकड़म भी लगाए। दरबार में घुसने के लिए सबसे पहले उन्होने शाही मुर्गी खाना में प्रभारी के पद पर काम शुरू किया। उन्होंने काम बहुत चालाकी से किया और मुर्गियों को वो खाना खिलाया जो शाही रसोई में बच जाता था। इससे हुआ ये की मुर्गियों के भोजन में किया जानें वाला खर्चा बहुत कम हो गया और खाते में काफी बचत हुई। इससे अकबर ने प्रभावित होकर मुल्ला दो प्याजा को शाही पुस्तकालय की जिम्मेदारी सौंप दी।
मुल्ला दो प्याजा इससे खुश नहीं थे क्योंकि उनको दरबार में जगह बनानी थी। दरबार में जो तोहफे में मखमल के कपड़े मिलते थे उसको इखट्टा करके मुल्ला दो प्याजा ने पुस्तकालय के पर्दे बनवा दिए। जब अकबर पुस्तकालय जाता तो पुस्तकालय देखकर खुश हो जाता और उसने खुश होकर मुल्ला दो प्याजा नसरूद्दीन होजा को दरबार में शामिल कर लिया। नसिरूद्दीन का नाम मुल्ला दो प्याजा होने की घटना भी अनोखी है। कहते हैं एक दिन दरबार में शामिल फैजी ने होजा को खाने पर बुलवाया और मुर्गे का मांस बनवाया। यह मुर्गे का मांस नसरूद्दीन होजा को बहुत पसन्द आया और यह नसरूद्दीन होजा को इतना पसंद आया की जब भी दावत होती तो यह “मुर्ग दो प्याजा” नसरूद्दीन होजा के लिए जरूर बनता था।
जब अकबर ने शाही रसोई की जिम्मेदारी नसरूद्दीन होजा को सौंपी तो अब्दूल हसन ने “मुर्ग दो प्याजा” बनवाकर अकबर को भी खिलाया और अकबर को यह इतना पसन्द आया की अकबर ने नसरूद्दीन होजा का नाम “दो प्याजा” रख दिया। चुंकि नसरूद्दीन होजा मस्जिद में ईमाम भी रह चुके थे तो लोग इन्हें मुल्ला भी कहते थे। इस तरह नसरूद्दीन होजा का नाम मुल्ला दो प्याजा पड़ गया।
